FOR Nico

Nico’s parents knew weeks before he was born that he had a diaphragmatic hernia. But they didn’t know until after he was born that his esophagus wasn’t attached to anything.
Doctors first fixed the hernia when he was less than 24 hours old, and then addressed the other extreme condition. After spending months in the NICU, Dr. Hamm refers to Nico as the boy who lived - one of only 18 known cases in the world where patients had both conditions and survived. With frequents visits with the specialists at OCH, he’s now flourishing.
“He’s definitely beat the odds,” says Nico’s father, Angelo. “He’s doing fantastic.”
