Indeed! He has been completely UNDER-rated. If he looked like a young Sting or a George Michael, Joe Jackson would've long ago been declared a "genius!" Life just ain't fair. But the ARTISTRY remains!
I also love Joe Jackson's 'Steppin' Out'... he is so talented and underrated in my opinion! It's fun to see these classic song's with new perspectives!!
I always liked "Its Different for Girls". I also think he is under rated, maybe just forgotten about, mostly a late 70s and 80s artist. "Steppin Out" is probably his biggest hit,I haven't really heard from him since then, that I can think of....But all over the airwaves for a decade or so
Joe's a classically trained pianist, was a big part of new-wave music and recorded several genres! Check out his "Look Sharp", "One More Time", and "Sunday Papers",
That entire first "Look Sharp" album is amazing. Every track is killer. One of my favorite songs of Joe's - and one of my favorite songs of all time, however - is "A Slow Song", which might be off the same album as this song. I couldn't love that song more if I wanted to.
Extremely popular in Australia also. A great similar song to this is Be My Number Two with a WILD and SUPER SAXAPHONE ending to blow your Joe Jackson socks off!!
Just love everyone's comments about the great man Joe... He made singing on the slightly off, but great jazz key, unique, yet, timeless... he listened to all the greats and brought it to the 80's!
Night and Day is one of the best albums of 1982. "Slow Song" and "Cancer" are two superb deep cuts. This song has some melodic resemblance to "Day After Day" by Badfinger.
I love the live performance of both “Cancer” and “Slow Song” from his double live album. Especially when he builds up with “Slow Song”. I read his liner notes about how Joe Jackson saw a young girl in the audience was crying and that he felt like crying after seeing her too, but held back.
Funny how that happens. Sometimes it’s deliberate (Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself” is stolen from a Rachmaninov concerto; he thought it was public domain, but got sued by the estate). More often, a melody pops into your head, and it could have been there since childhood, but you think it’s your own. Also, there are only a certain amount of chords. Some go well with other chords, so people will hear similar chord progressions in two or more songs. ETA: See Bill McClintock’s mashups. They’re an example of two very different song genres with similar chord progressions. Edit 2: The McClinton mashup of the Dan & Metallica’s Seek and Destroy is almost epic. What made it “almost” was his editing Kiss in near the end.
Love your words of wisdom, Jamel! First marriage didn't work out, but after 29 yrs. being single, I'm now 64 and just celebrated my 10-yr. anniversary with my true soul mate. We were best friends first, and that's so important! Best decision I ever made! Thanks for reacting to a song I had not thought about in decades!
I've been a huge fan of Joe Jackson since his first album and still love his music. Super talented and shamefully underrated. I was lucky enough to see him three times live here in Australia and each concert was an exercise in perfection. A real musical chameleon.
This is SUCH a great song, it’s masterfully constructed and the lyrics are so relatable. Joe Jackson only had about 4 hits but they are all SO good! Joe Jackson is one of the best things about the 80s(I know his first hit was in the late 70s)
TY mate , I have always loved this song and had forgotten how deep and how beautiful this song is, I recall how my wife and I would put "Look Sharp" on the record player and sit outside enjoying Joe's music while having a nice white wine and watching the sunset. I remember falling in love with my wife of now 25 years and falling in love with Joe Jackson Ty mate great memories remembered tonight..Keep Strong Keep Safe My friend
Oh I love you doing some more Joe Jackson - my big bro gifted me 'Look Sharp' for my 11th birthday - i've had it as a record, tape, cd, illegal download and now on Spotify. Such an underrated artist. Love his lyrics. Thank you for another great reaction 🙏🏻
This whole album, and "Look Sharp" are amazing. On of my favorite artists ever. Check out "Real Men" from this album for a deeper dive into Joe's songwriting.
Hey Jamel. I love the versatility of Joe Jackson's music. So many styles done so well. I still love this song after all these years, but it's the video that makes me tear up a bit. LOL ☮ out! ✌🏼
Gosh, I just love Joe Jackson. He has such a unique sound. If I may recommend a song, listen to 'It's Different for Girls'. It's my absolute fave of his.
I love Joe Jackson so much! And I love this song. My husband and I have been married almost 29 years. We dated for 4-1/2 years before we married. So it has been a long haul! It was harder when we were younger. It really does get easier as time goes by, as long as you find things to do together. We have MANY things we do individually, but we make time to do things together!
Joe Jackson overtime has grown into one of my favorite artists of all-time especially from the 80s, he has a deep catalog that you gotta checkout as another one of my favorites was Cancer and You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) as well.
I love your JJ reactions, finally someone here who appreciates what a great songwriter Joe is and how great his band is. More songs to react to, please: Real Men, Stranger Than Fiction, Be My Number Two, Got the Time, It's Different For Girls, A Slow Song, Happy Endings. Thanks a lot.
I was following Joe's early stuff back then. This record Night And Day comes along COMPLETELY different from his first three albums ( much quieter and introspective). It was an acquired taste for me at first because of how different it was, but sticking with it this record REALLY grows on you!
This album....."Night and day"....what....it sold platinum?.... "stepping out" had a Grammy nomination. And....it was a stupendously perfect album among the wide range of other outstanding albums of 1982. Breaking us in two and stepping out were kind of a background and foreground "wallpaper" for the year 1982. They seemed to fit so perfectly within what was happening in that year.
By far, one of the great deeper melodies from the 80s. IMO, It doesn't seem like a healthy relationship & he knows it. He loves her & they reunite until the next time they break in two. Been with my hubs/boyfriend/best friend & soulmate nearly 24 years. When it's right, it's right. Peace to you & your lovely wife :)
He played for our senior week at University of Rhode Island 1984. It was kind of a good find for us being such a small place especially since the Steppin Out Album was playing big at the time.,
I like the pounding of the piano keys as he goes into the chorus. His version of Jumpin' Jive is awesome and I like "You can't get what you want, til you know what you want" and "My number two".
This was/is the perfect you-go-your-way & I'll-go-mine song. Jackson's vocal is strong & yet coolly unique. Please listen him bang/play SUPERBLY on piano while singing the song "Cancer." You'll be even more deeply IMPRESSED w/ the skillz!
Silly story: My son was born in 1982 and his dad and I had JJ's "Night and Day" album ... our son was colicky and cried a lot for the first few months. His dad and I tried to keep our sense of humor during that difficult time and we'd make up different lyrics to songs and sing them to each other. One of those songs was "Cancer" ... it became 🎶"Everything, everything makes him fussy, everything ..." 🎶 😄
Joe Jackson, a great songwriter and singer. You should also react to, Is she really going out with him, Real men. The harder they come, Happy ending, It's different for girls, Fools in love . Those songs brings me back to the eighties.
Joe Jackson ('Yo Yackson' as the Hispanics call him) is one of my all-time favourites! Glad you have started on him, Jamel. This song is fabulous from a fabulous album. I saw Jackson in concert in Montreal, June 10, 1986 and he was fabulous (and the band all wore blue shirts).
Always loved this song! And yes, I’ve said the same- dating these days... ugh- I cannot imagine- good luck to all trying to find that right one- sincerely. ✨. ❤️💙👍✨

Joe Jackson. One of the most underrated singer songwriters of all time.
Agreed. Probably (a distant) second to Al Stewart.
Indeed! He has been completely UNDER-rated. If he looked like a young Sting or a George Michael, Joe Jackson would've long ago been declared a "genius!" Life just ain't fair. But the ARTISTRY remains!
Joe Jackson has an extensive catalogue of music! He's one of the most versatile musicians of his time and worth a deep dive!
YES!!
My favorite Joe Jackson tune is "Is She Really Going Out With Him?". Such a cool song. You would dig it, Jamel. 🎶❤
Yes, I love the three different versions of _Is She Really Going Out With Him?_ on the live album.
I also love Joe Jackson's 'Steppin' Out'... he is so talented and underrated in my opinion!

Just do the entire “Look Sharp” album.
+1 Sunday Papers
Great stuff. Mr. Jackson is underrated in the US, his talent and style were better recognized at home in the UK.
I were a 13 year old black kid in Chicago listening to- I'm the man and look Sharp- in 1978. I'm 55 now and love it still..

I still have the album, too. Love that cover. Even after cassettes, CDs, and digital downloads, I still love my vinyl. And the music is still so good!
"Look Sharp" is a great tune! You're lucky to own it on vinyl.
Night and Day is one of the best albums of 1982. "Slow Song" and "Cancer" are two superb deep cuts. This song has some melodic resemblance to "Day After Day" by Badfinger.
