@@patdonnelly9392 Always thought the great Brit triad of song writing was Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Paul Weller. Add in Andy Partrige (XTC), and you're all squared away.
Back in 2008, I got to hang out in the dressing room with Graham Mabey (Bass) and Dave Houghton (Drums) when they reformed with Joe for the album "Rain". Dave is a friend of a friend, and got us the free tickets and backstage passes. Joe had his own dressing room. He briefly poked his head in the door, saw we were in there, and left again. I believe he's a bit of an introvert. One of my memories of it was that the dressing room fridge was very small with only a few bottles of beer in (Graham gave me the last one). Still... free beer!
Joe Jackson and crew have such a precise, clean delivery. It would be (and has been) easily over looked as simply “catchy” or “fun”. The lyrics though ! And that base! And that crisp, snapping drum! Undersold, but over delivered.
This is so cool that you're listening to Joe Jackson's first album! "Look Sharp" is a New Wave classic! Joe's second album, "I"m the Man" is equally great. Check out the song "I'm the Man", great song about consumerism.
Oh congratulations on finding one of my most favourite artists in the world. Love, love LOVE Jo Jackson! Oh and love his sarcasm, that's what this song is, total sarcasm.
Joe Jackson is one of my favorite composers, songwriters & singers, but what impresses me most is his knack for placing the perfect musician for each note of every song.
Love all of Joe's old stuff, I toured with them back in the day, the drummer dave Houghton brought me up from eight years old so I got to know the band very very well ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
More Joe Jackson? Anything and everything from the "Look Sharp!" album. Literally every song on it is great. Try "Pretty Girls" or "Happy Loving Couples"
In England the Sunday papers were quite big and used to come with magazine's. i did a paper round while at school in the early 80's. doing Sundays was hard work as the bag was so heavy and lots more people wanting pairs that day.
Different For Girls is one of my favorites. The studio and live versions are both excellent. Love Sunday Papers and the whole Look Sharp album. I have the cassette tape i bought sometime around 1988. Thanks Jamel🎶
Just a pure "drop the needle on any song" album. I'm The Man was the shit too. Like his whole catalog, but those first 2 albums will always hold a special place in my heart.
I remember hearing these songs of his back in the day and being somewhat familiar with his work. But this sounds very fresh and crisp today. His band here definitely had a snap to their playing.
Do you have it on vinyl? I don't know if this is still the case, but the original vinyl was in between a single and double album: it was two discs, the second of which only had music on one side, the second being blank!
Hi Jamel! I just went back through watching your SRV reactions agggggain 🤣 & holy cow! You've missed MY favorite performance ever & one of his most popular! It's been reacted to a lot! You'll LOVE it! "Life Without You" (LIVE at Capitol Theater) -He plays with a different body part than you've ever seen, I think! -His vocals are beautifully sexy -He stops to speak to the audience about a subject close to your heart. Being a good human. -He wrote it for a friend that past I'd be HONORED if you'd check it out! I'd love to see your reaction. ❤🙏🏻
Love your comments as always. He is amazing and his band as well. Along with Elvis Costello got me through this period of music.check out all of Joe's big world album
GOOD TO SEE YOU DO SOME ( J.J. ) AGAIN BEEN A WHILE I REMEMBER OVER A YEAR AGO YOU WOULD DO SOME REACTION IN THE RESTROOM SO IT'S GREAT TO HEAR HIS SOUND AGAIN ON THE CHANNEL THANKS JAMEL_AKA_JAMAL ✌🏼& LO💚E MY BROTHER
So glad you did this one! All the instruments are rocking on it. Bass is sublime, but the guitar and drums are great too and then that harmonica at the end!
The best thing about Joe Jackson is that...this man was/is the KING of writing a sarcastic song. He has a song on this album called "Fools In Love" and its sooo wonderfully sarcastic. You should check that one out too.
Back in the olden days before internet the Sunday Newspaper came (if subscribed) to your door. In it all kinds of wondrous information. This song is simply an homage to that. His mother sits at home at gets all the news and information from the Sunday Papers. Imagine a whole song not about Love or f*cking.
As mentioned below...please try some Elvis Costello. He's quite brilliant. You might want to start out with early gems like 'Pump it Up' ...but his entire catalogue of work is genius, and ever changing. He started in the late 70's and is still going strong.
The Sunday Papers were the way a lot of the people got news in the 50's and 60's, they'd finally be home for the weekend and catch up on things Sunday morning in the (5 lb.) newspaper.
Look Sharp! Another great one. A little more complicated song structure but that same delicious bass. You Can't Get What You Want is another tune with a delicious groove.
Love all the Joe Jackson stuff, such a good musician. The song 'Fit' is an interesting one to react to, that and 'Real Men', both important songs, especially for the time.
He would usually cover a couple Steely Dan songs during his shows and put his own touch to it, and they always would sound great, not an easy thing to do. Joe is the man. Hey bro next song from J.J. Should be You can’t get what you want till you know what you want. Killer bass and horns.
In case you haven’t figured it out, this whole album is great! What a debut from one of my absolute favorite artists. I see lots of the comments on here are praising his first two albums and rightly so, but so much of his stuff that follows is equally impressive. A true musical genius. Great albums include Beat Crazy, Big World, Night and Day, Blaze of Glory, Laughter and Lust, 4, and Joe Jackson’s Jumpin’ Jive.
Okay, here's a recommended departure for you - a cultural and genre shift, tapping into new wave and music hall traditions. A real London Cockney who was a brilliant artist as well as musician. Cockney humorous lyrics and soaring jazz saxophone. Non other the Ian Dury and the Blockheads with the song "What a Waste". Go on give it a go and hear something completely foreign to your ears.
Joe Jackson!!! Sooo many great songs to dig into. His rhythm section is always stellar. These should get you started. Look Sharp Stepping Out I’m the Man Night and Day Everything Gives You Cancer Beat Crazy Fools In Love You Can’t Get What You Want Different for Girls
YAY!! You did this great song!! Great vocals and amazing bass guitar. Always thought the chorus sounded a bit like The Beatles. Now please do "Got The Time." 😈
Great reaction! Glad you are diggin’ Joe Jackson! I saw him live at The Chestnut Cabaret in Philadelphia in 1990! You have to get a listen to (Do the) Instant Mash!
Check out the English Beat sometime. Start with "I Confess" or, for something really fast and hard-hitting, "Mirror in the Bathroom." Classic English Ska/Rock, the same place that Joe Jackson came out of. But JJ went in all kinds of other directions over his career.
Great stuff, as always. Love this and "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" - a well as your reaction to it. 🤣 No particular recommendations, other than "Everything." 😁
The Sunday papers in the UK back then (and maybe now?) were tabloid style papers, with a lot of celebrity gossip etc. This is Joe at his sarcastic best. And yeah - that bass. Graham Mabe was a major part of Joe's sound for years.

ah MAN! thanks so much for hitting this! LOVE your reactions, my dude! peace & inspiration be with you
These songs were pre-Stepping Out” era.
On his two LP’s Stepping Out and Body and Soul
he moves into different genres.
Loving the increase of Joe Jackson stuff. He’s extremely underrated and slept on. His catalogue is diverse and consistently good. A true artist.
Every album was different and an example of another facet of his talents.
Always loved his Jumpin Jive album 😎
He certainly never got the credit he deserved, so under rated.
He’s slept on because he’s a mid 70s Singer lmao it’s 2021
Joe Jackson "Look Sharp" and "I'm the man" entire albums are pure gold.. Try: "Happy loving couples"
Agreed...
Right on! 👍🏻
Oh yeah, "Look Sharp" is a classic!
I agree! I've followed Joe since Look Sharp. Brilliant original artist!
Graham Maby was the secret MVP on those early Joe Jackson albums. Such groovy bass lines!
Graham Maby is such a talent..
If you're digging Joe Jackson I'd suggest Elvis Costello: "Alison", "Watching The Detectives", "Pump It Up", "Radio, Radio", "Accidents Will Happen", "Clubland", "Everyday I Write The Book", "The Only Flame In Town" (with Daryl Hall), and/or "Veronica"
Also his cover of “What’s so funny about peace love and understanding”!!!
I was just about to recommend Costello too. Always categorize those two together. Good stuff 👍🏼

Love this little Joe Jackson mini-marathon. Haven’t heard these song in years. Decades! Such good stuff!
Graham Maby is a remarkably underrated bassist. His baseline for Jackson’s ‘Geraldine and John’ is amazing.
Look Sharp is a great Album...every song on it is a classic....
Check out his songs "It's Different for Girls" and "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)."

That bass line is pure fire 🔥!
Joe Jackson is no joke ✌🏻
Joe Jackson's bassist, Graham Maby, is awesome.
I love the bass line in this song! I don't believe I've ever heard this before. It jams! And it's true. I've read alot in them Sunday editions!
Graham Maby is so good!
@@wpollock1 Graham Maby is a God
You said it!!!
I love the sarcasm: "Well I got nothing against the press, they wouldn't print it if it was not true."
I saw him on the same bill as the Famines back in 1979 or 1980. During this song on stage he burns a newspaper on fire. Respect.
Same bill as the *Ramones*. Damn NW0 "auto correct" got me again.
Yes Graham Maby's bass IS everything. Always.

I’m in shock - I always thought “I’m the Man” was first; it’s what introduced me to Joe in the late 70s!

Joe Jackson and crew have such a precise, clean delivery. It would be (and has been) easily over looked as simply “catchy” or “fun”. The lyrics though ! And that base! And that crisp, snapping drum! Undersold, but over delivered.
You simply HAVE to do “I’m the Man” next. It’ll blow the hat off your head,
"This bass is everything". He's Graham Maby who is as good as they come.
Sunday papers is so great! And that bass breakdown is killer.
Man, I had forgotten about this song. The base line is everything
Joe Jackson's Kinda Kute is one of my favorites that isn't talked about as much. Great song though.
Gotta do Joe Jackson's "I'm the Man" - definitely will want a lyric video for that one.
