You and I are the same age, having our wild days in the 80's. Been doing tree work ever since and hand filing as well and just wanted to say your tips brought me to new great unexpected levels. Thank you.
I switched from Stihl to Oregon chains. Reason being is that I bought a new Stihl chain for my saw and went to a job. I get there and I run out my old chain as long as possible. I ran the file over it a little and ran it some more. The cutting was getting slow enough that I unboxed my new chain and put it on the bar. I should say, tried to put it on the bar. There were four links that were a different color on the chain. These links were much thicker than the rest of the chain. So thick that they would not slot into the bar. I couldn't run it. It was as if someone broke the chain, replaced the links with thicker links and sold it to me as if it were new. I popped into a chainsaw dealership, the closest to me at the time, and all they had were Oregon chains. I bought one for half what the Stihl chain cost me and I haven't looked back.
Welcome everyone! Hope you're all having a great day! Thanks for the tensioning tip Buckin! Be interesting to see how tension changes between different woods as well! Nice and helpful indeed! Your place looks amazing Ron, thank you for letting us into your property!

OMG...triangle windows!! I haven't used those since I was a teen workin' for my dad. Thanks for the memory!! Seems like I'll be gettin' the Oregon chains next go-round. Love and Kindness.
I remember the "Wings" on the side of the front doors - They were good for air flow and can direct it and they were useful in deflecting the stream of bugs from wiping along the drivers window. Then we got screw on metal fins in front of them to do the bug flow and the wings back to air. 1952 Woody fire engine Red. Wonderful car. Bought new.
Oregon chain's are good chain's and will cut fast the down fall is that they are made of a softer metal and wont hold a edge as long as a Stihl chain. Which is what makes Stihl chain's a better choice for heavy cutting.
David Wolfe I agree....Stihl chains keep the edge longer, better lubrication with the slotted “oilomatic” drivers, which also reduces chain stretch. New file before you head into the sticks helps your day go smoothly, too.

I like the way you did your test and adding the raker tweak. Thanks, That was very interesting. I did a similar test with the new Husky X-Cut chain on a 550XP MK2, a 550XP with a 21 Chain and a Stihl261CM with a new factory chain. May not seem like a technically good comparison but I have compared the saws previously and they are exceptionally close. I may repeat it like you did with just one saw and changing the chains. The X-Cut chain was a little faster and noticeably smoother cutting. I've never officially checked the hardness of different brands. That will be an interesting next test but I have a bunch of cutting to do before I can get to that. What I see from most of this is that in real life work, I probably add more variability to the cut time than the chain does. Thanks for your videos. Love em!

Awesome video!! Thank you!! I Pulled into Esquimalt/ Vancouver Island, Canada in 1997 when I was in the Navy!! Loved it! Great liberty in a great port!!
Great test! We all understand that in any cutting operation, friction is the enemy. Perhaps some comparisons with a temp gun along some spots maybe helpful. Most of us know that point where it is time to stop cutting, fill lube, refresh edges before continuing to cut. I would be curious if the larger Stihl tooth produced more or less friction. Keep up the good work!

I loved those old wing windows, I can remember riding with my dad in his 64 Skylark to buy me ice cream, that car would roar! I how I miss those days, this video reminds me of that era. Nice boats Root Rot! Thanks for the outstanding views of your property! I’m so jealous. I love my Sthil RS chain, but Oregon is really stepping their game up with their new speed cut chains. Say hay Army Sam
I’m doing very well friend, EH! I’m a new subscriber by two days and been binge watching videos. I haven’t laughed so much for years. Then your “broken back” re-accounting put tears in my eyes. I’ve had several major life changing accidents that humbled me as well and I’m happy to be alive. Great job.
I have an old 94 f150 pick up that I drive every day to work. Old school a/c. window wings and rollup windows! I'll drive it till falls completely apart or.. maybe I should pay to restore body and what not? Either way it would be cheaper than an newer year that I don't know what they done and might inherent their problems instead of knowing what problems I have with this truck? Better to keep the Devil ya know I guess in this case?
We always called the little windows the quarter glass , don't see them too often on modern cars . The old landrovers and landcruisers had a vent down in the footwell , plenty of cooling breeze on the legs with those open :-)
that's interesting. when I was growing up around cars those were known as wing windows on pickup doors and quarter glass would be the rear side windows on a 2 door car. Or the rear most side windows on some 4 door cars.
I love those old McCulloch,s man, good to them used, back in the day they were the top of the line saws,. i love your axe sharpening videos also,. you got a lot of really nice stuff,.
Hey Buckin'.... I used a RSK Super on my MS 460 Magnum.... supposedly a little more aggressive and speed. I noticed a difference immediately. Stihl chains are awesome
@@markenda1 I get them from my local dealer in Upstate NY. I did exactly like Buckin' did... a quick file of the rakers... but its aggresive to begin with and a bit dangerous if you dont know what you are doing. Lookup Sherwood's Power Equipment... Newburgh NY
Hey Billy Ray, Just found this video, Thank you! Your videos always make me smile and they are so upbuilding. God bless you and your family. Be safe, be well and happy sawing.
Hey Billy Ray,loving your video's and your positive energy. Sending our love all the way from the deep forest's of Tasmania brother.keep up the good work! ✌
Billy, I really enjoy watching/listening to you read wood compression/tension and you really know your stuff and I learn something in each of your videos but there are a few things that bother me for those who watch you especially since your keen on "safety practices" and often point them out to others. My limited experience has been doing Trail Maintenance on the Appalachian Bartram, Benton MacKaye and other trails in the south where safety is important and where wearing helmets, safety glasses, face shields, gloves, chainsaw chaps and "using chainsaw brakes" are stressed as standard practices that you don't always do and never stress and should be to ensure that the non-professional chain saw users who watch/listen to you develop safe working habits for their personal safety... I hope you can start also encluding some of these safety items in your videos...
Love your video and enthusiasm Buckin' Billy Ray! I had a big smile on my face all the way through. I've got a little Stihl MS180 and just purchased an Oregon advance cut bar and 50 gage chain. I am looking forward to getting her out and see how she cuts today. Hey, thanks for the fun inspiration. Looking forward to seeing your other videos.
I’ve been reading all the comments to find out more on the EXL Power Cut Oregon chain. I’ve heard it’s the best Oregon chain and trying to find out the most I can before purchasing a chain to replace the original chain on my Echo CS590 Timberwolf. Is it true about that chain, I heard it’s better than Stihl and best Oregon chain made
I dont like the way stihl chains are sharpened at the factory, the gullet is not round, and they have a little bump before the lower part of the gullet. I believe it slows the wood discharge. It makes wood chips plug inside the gullet. I find that stihl chains cut the best on the first sharpening, when you get the nice smooth semi-circle shaped gullet, and the teeth are the highest because it's still new. What I like about Oregon chains is that the angle the cutting teeth have is not as dropped backwards as the stihls, so they will keep a bigger gutter through the chain's life, while stihl chains get smaller and shorter when sharpening compared with the oregon. Sorry for my bad english, cheers from Argentina 💪💪
Phroden Dekia you like about oregon dull a lot and have to tighten them all the time poor quality thats why they are cheap. Stihl chain is far superior to Oregon and other brands i have run all of them
@@Wanous-hv7zo Yes, you have to compare Stihl chains against top of the line Oregon. Blount makes different quality chains, so you have to pay attention to which chain your dealer gives you when you ask for an Oregon chain.
Ok I’m jealous. I can’t even sharpen a friken chain tried for 3 hrs told my wife I failed the woodsmen test. But I can do concrete work. Lol. Thank friend love you’re videos 🙏🙏🙏
Buckin" I believe the Oregon chain has the off-set rakers, they call it "Low Vibration" The Oregon was a good bit faster. It would be interesting to see which chain held it's edge the longest. Probably no way to test it but you would be able to tell I am sure. Paul from Texas
Im a pro timber faller up here in the pacific northwest. This is my 20th year. I log in an area northeast of mt st helens and we still have ash in the bark of our trees 40 years later. We all run oregon chain here because it stays sharper far longer. I can run two square ground oregon chains per day here, change to a new chain at lunch. I tried out stihl chain, and had to touch up my chain with a file 3-6 times per day on top of swapping chains at lunch. I regret buying a 100' loop of stihl chain. I ended up just giving the rest of it away. Oregon is the way to go.
I gotta tell ya Buckin, that the footage in the truck was the best part for me. Took me back to when my grandad had an old Chevy truck, and passed it down to my dad. I didnt get it but I had one of the same vintage, late 70s. Looking at the inside of the truck, listening to the motor, watching you mess with the vent window (those were the best, i miss them) all took me back to a great time in my youth. Thanks.
I am 61 years old. I cut firewood with a McCulla Mac-10 when I was 16 years old . My Father still has the saw. I think it belonged to my Grandfather. It's Loud no Chain Brake.. the bar was not a Sprocket nose .. Should be able to one for it however.. It has points you need to fiddle with once in a while . Had to replace the ignition switch before ..

Say hay Army
Sam
I’m doing very well friend, EH! I’m a new subscriber by two days and been binge watching videos. I haven’t laughed so much for years. Then your “broken back” re-accounting put tears in my eyes. I’ve had several major life changing accidents that humbled me as well and I’m happy to be alive. Great job.
Love this channel learning a bunch of chainsaw tips thank you from Bassett Virginia U.S.A
wow what a hoot that was a super fun vid!!!!!!! positive vibes from northern wisconsin! !!!!
MAN, I am jealous as hell of that SWEET mercury truck
Amazing demo of the chains and what alittle adjustment on the rakers can do for cutting speed. Thanks for the video .
I love them triangle windows can channel that air to where it is needed after those long hot days.
They were called quarter lights, a wee while ago
Beautiful place Ron, beautiful boats 👍, good show Billy 😬❤️👍
Nice channel
Outdoor with the Morgans told me to check you out
I don't now why this is so interesting. I can't stop watching mesmerizing. 😯
We’re doing ok in the U.K. had some rain too dampe; the dust
Like old times having a natter in the ole truck 👍👍🇬🇧
Those wing windows are awesome unless a bee comes in and gets between your legs
I love Billy's short attention span! He's hysterically, easily distracted! 😊
OH INDEED I AM
@@BuckinBillyRaySmith maybe you have mild ADHD because we have a lot of similarities 🤷
Short attention span is sighn of a hard worker I know I have the same problem sometimes the wife doesn't care for it lol
Hey Buckin'.... I used a RSK Super on my MS 460 Magnum.... supposedly a little more aggressive and speed. I noticed a difference immediately. Stihl chains are awesome
I filed the rakers like you did.... throwing chips like crazy....
Where do you get your RSK at? My dealer says that Stihl doesn't have it listed anymore, despite it being in the latest Stihl catalog.
@@markenda1 I get them from my local dealer in Upstate NY. I did exactly like Buckin' did... a quick file of the rakers... but its aggresive to begin with and a bit dangerous if you dont know what you are doing. Lookup Sherwood's Power Equipment... Newburgh NY
@@markenda1 I believe its RSK 33.... big difference from the standard RS chain. Bad ass sawchain
@@markenda1 let me know if you have any problems

Good to see you here on the Channel, enjoy the ride and welcome 👍😊
Hello & welcome from Scotland Bear Claw Creek 😀❤️👍
hello from s.e. Michigan
So happy I found your content. I really liked your quote about doing what nourishes your spirit. Also looks like I'll be buying some Oregon Chains.
Buckin' that EXL Oregon chain is incredibly smooth and fast.
I've been very impressed with the loops I have.
good comment dude
Yes that exl chain is real good
I’ve been reading all the comments to find out more on the EXL Power Cut Oregon chain. I’ve heard it’s the best Oregon chain and trying to find out the most I can before purchasing a chain to replace the original chain on my Echo CS590 Timberwolf. Is it true about that chain, I heard it’s better than Stihl and best Oregon chain made
3:06 that hock and spit, I relate to that...
Hey Ron! Great u let Buckin come out to do the chain test, what a beautiful cabin! Have a great safe kind day everyone!
Great video love your outlook on life and the upbeat personality.
I sure wish I had the privilege of meeting him in person! Nothing but good vibes coming from Billy. The world could use a few more of him.
Your English is way better than most native English speakers in the U.S.
This guy is a hoot! Lol Definitely loves life! Great stuff!!!! Ole Ron got it going on!!! Badass place with alot of badass toys!!!
Thanks to Root For Ron, and hello to everyone. Interesting video I would have never guessed the out come of this chain challenge.
The Oregon chain looks as if it comes with the Gullet got!
