She's the best ever! Price singing Liebestod sends chills up my spine and tears to my eyes, its so visceral yet transcendent. It's like catching a moment of something divine to hear her sing.
I will always cherish that I saw the great Miss Leontyne Price in concert in 1984. I also got her autograph. What a talent. In reference to legendary Miss Marian Anderson remember my great-grandmother sharing the story of her being denied singing at Constitution Hall because of the color of her skin. Leaders like Dr Mary McLeod Bethune staged a massive protest. First Lady Roosevelt resign DAR. She sung at the Lincoln Memorial. I also have Miss Anderson autograph.
An excellent overview of Miss Price and her musicianship. Bravo for identifying her as an American soprano, not a black soprano. I look forward to hearing more of your commentary. Continued success, Dev Glover, Atlanta
The look and emotion on her face at the end as the audience applauds brings me to tears almost as much as her voice. Thank you for these videos and sharing such important history!
My favorite opera singer, by far.
Her Carmen is sublime ♡
That composure at the end of the aria…fully in character…the emotions strike her of how much the public loves her…it’s overwhelming. She regains her composure and enjoys the sound ❤
One can’t help but wonder if she was remembering her debut applause in that moment 🤔
A sublime singer who has blessed ALL OF US with her long life
I learned today that she STILL vocalises to top F above high C….EVERY MORNING!!❤🥰🤩
Thanks. She was THE Aida of her generation (arguably of all time.) But she also championed American music, like that of Samuel Barber, whose songs she recorded, and whose world premiere of "Antony and Cleopatra" with her opened the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. Cheers.
Haven't heard a soprano yet that sings "O Patria Mia" from Aida with ease like Ms. Price.
Grew up with her RCA Red Label recordings of Tosca, Trovatore, and Aida. So for me, she IS Tosca, Leonora, and Aida. The absolute queen.
I had the honor of performing harp for an intimate birthday party for her. I thought I’d be playing background music, but the moment I sat down, she exclaimed “silenzio”. She asked me to introduce myself and name the pieces I would perform and name the composers. It was a recital instead of the usual background. One of the great honors of my life to date
Fantastic story@
Me: reads the title
Me, out loud: “The GOAT.”
♡♡♡♡♡
Only the greatest coloratura ever. That’s all. I heard her Traviata and cried my eyes out.
She made one of the best Christmas records, bare none. In Montreal. Very hard to find nowadays. I grew up listening to it.
Omg Sir, thank you, thank you, and a thousand times THANK YOU for this!!! Preach it bro!
This should be the standard for Black culture and Black history! As a white European person living in America, it makes me so sad to see the degradation and glorification of mediocrity that’s being passed as Black “culture” nowadays 😢 I’m talking about all those dime a dozen poptarts, twerking ‘queens’ and unsubstantial rappers 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
When y’all have had icons of the stature of Leontyne Price, Marian Anderson, Wynton Marsalis, Scott Joplin, Arthur Mitchell, Aesha Ash, Mahalia Jackson, Jessye Norman, Kathleen Battle, Paul Robeson et al, representing you with the utmost dignity and excellence, the riannas and byonces and lilwhatevers are absolutely meaningless. No disrespect intended, but really…
Preach it brother! God bless ❤
Edit: Madame Price’s delivery in Verdi’s Requiem, conducted by Karajan at La Scala remains unsurpassed to this day ❤
Please do Shirley verett
