    Airing down in deep snow can work really well, but it's very rare that it will get you out after you get stuck. Airing down is like putting on snow shoes -- it spreads the weight out across the snow, decreasing how much you sink in. But when your tires have already dug themselves holes, airing down doesn't give you enough traction to climb out of the holes.

  • @Rat-Builder
    @Rat-Builder Před 2 lety +5

    "Dry" lakes can be problematic. A few years ago I was riding my XT600 on a "dry" lake in Nevada. My bike at the time was geared for 95 MPH. I was in the middle of this dry lake going about 50 MPH, when I could feel it start to sink into the mud. I immediately snapped the throttle wide open and headed for the shoreline. I was about 1/4 mile from said shoreline, and I was nervous, and all by myself. (Which is usual for me) The engine is quite torquey, and was tached out in 5th gear, but the bike was going slower and slower. By the time that I made it to the shoreline my front tire was going 10 MPH, and the back tire was going 95 MPH. I was digging a trench like you would not believe, but I made it out. Around here all of the dry lakes are covered with a white coating, and you can't tell if it is solid or not just by looking at it.
    I couple of years previous to this, a friend had been on this same "dry" lake, but it was in the spring of the year, and he was going too fast to turn around. He was also sinking too fast to allow him to keep going. He actually had to leave his bike stuck in the mud up to the engine cases for a month before it dried out enough to allow us to walk out to it.
    He actually had to crawl 1/2 a mile to the shoreline, because he kept sinking in if he tried to walk. He was also by himself. He told me later that he had never been so scared. He thought that he was going to be stuck out there forever. Then he figured out that if he crawled, he could keep moving. (This was long before cell phones)
    The mud that is under the surface is super sticky. People try to drive on the salt flats next to Wendover Nevada, and it takes a lot of winching to get them out.
