  • Recording my outfits is the best thing I have ever done in trying to find my personal style. When you plan what you wear, you discover so much about the choices you make. I make much better decisions regarding shopping and I have a much stronger grip on my own sense of style. Using a combination of Whering and Open Wardrobe for the last 12 weeks I have kept a strict record and plan of everything I have worn.

Thank you Ellie for talking about sustainability in a very accessible and non-judgemental way. I'm a sustainable textile/fashion specialist, and I think your system of thinking about clothes is exactly what we need more of.
There's nothing wrong with loving clothes, we just need to be thoughtful about it. đŸŽ‰â€

      @@elliejeanroydenI'm so glad!
We all need to remember that it's not on the majority of consumers to change the system. There are bigger systemic changes that need to be made, by governments, corporations and the very wealthy, to address sustainability issues. Raising mass cultural & global awareness is definitely a part of that; as consumer behavior and preference changes enough, it does make a difference. However, the best thing we can all do is be mindful, interrogate our own consumption habits and TRY our best to make ethical decisions.
I found that educating, and taking an interest in things like garment construction and fabric quality can really change the way someone sees/values their clothes.
Anyway- I can go on so I'll stop now.😂
Keep on keeping on! Love your channel. :)

Video wishlist: more style roots content! I would love an in depth video on each root and what aestethics that goes with it, how to apply it to different body types and essences. Maybe one where people could send you all their types etc and you could suggest different style roots? I think your system really has something and would love to go down a rabbit hole similar to when I found the kibbe system but since it's your invention we can only get it strictly from the first hand source (so far!). Love all your work

Gotta say, I am SO impressed with your system!! I'm on a health journey and am losing significant weight that I have been carrying since I was 9 years old so I've never seen my "real body" as an adult. The chance to rebuild my wardrobe has been something I've been waiting years for and your system has been so fascinating and so helpful.

When I do laundry I hang all my shirts up on the left side of my closet. So the less I wear something, the further it slides to the right. This helps me add more variety into my weekly outfits by easily seeing and avoiding what I wore last week, and it also shows me which pieces I never wear.

In 2018 I tracked the wear of my clothing by putting a dot on every item. I culled unworn items at 6 and 12 months. I was pleased to learn I was wearing most of my clothes. In 2019 it was a year of not buying anything new. 2020 was not buying anything at all, which didn't go very well. I was then inspired by CZcamsr Christina Mychas to inventory my wardrobe in a new way by documenting what I wore every day -including jewelry, shoes and jackets/coats. If I remember correctly, she wanted high use items in her wardrobe and culled (almost) everything she wore *less than* 2 times a month, or 24 times in a year. In 2022 I tried this in my own wardrobe and found, once again, items I never wore once in 12 months. I really had to think if I would *ever* wear the items. I decided I don't want a clothing museum in my house! Out they went. It also did help me drill down on the looks I created most often and where to put my money. Excellent excercise whether by Excel sheet like me and Christina did or via technology.

I use Stylebook App, and it's been helpful to know what I have and where it is. (I go back and forth between the US and West Africa.) And I have more than 300 pieces, but I still think I'm overall minimal. That counts everything like pajamas, bras, headbands, etc. Since I have clothes for different climates and cultures, I'm naturally going to have more. But I am starting to reduce the number by using things up and not replacing them. I'm glad you mentioned that closet clearouts are not always sustainable. That's an easy trap for me to fall into. I can get rid of things without a problem, but then I replace them. I'm working on using what I already have and rethinking what I "need."

I've started using it and entering everything can be time consuming at first, but I think it's worth it. I just took an hour or two on couple rainy days and entered all my work clothes, accessories, and shoes (total of 175 items). I didn't bother with casual stuff because it's not really worth tracking for my lifestyle. Work is where I'd like to get more creative with my outfits and use the expensive pieces more. They have a lot of categories you can use to classify your items, but I just stuck to brand, if it's secondhand/vintage, approximate date acquired, material type (since I'm trying to be more sustainable) and some of the features like sleeve length, dress shape, etc. All that stuff can be entered later, when you have an idle moment to batch edit by category. I'm not going to bother with price per use because a lot of my stuff is (thankfully) too old to remember how much it cost and how many times I've already worn it.

I've been tracking what I wear for over a year now. What I love about it, but also what scares me a little, is the reality check it provides. I can feel like I love a pair of jeans and wear it all the time and check and realise that it's clearly not the case anymore beacuse I haven't used them since June. It's crazy how wrong I was about some of my clothes. 😂
It's also interesting to find those subtle patterns in the way I style myself. For example, recently I've realised that I don't really wearmy mini skirts that often, although I like them and theiy suit me well. I'm still not 100% sure why that is exactly but I suspect that one of the reasons is that when the weather is nice I prefer wearing dresses.
Unfortunetly, it didn't help as much with getting rid of clothes I don't wear as much as I wanted to. Sure, in some cases I could be honest with myself and recognise that I'm not gonna wear something because I don't like how it looks on me or I have other pieces that do the job better. BUT in some cases the "but what if I NEED it someday 😔" mentality wins and so that one blouse is gonna spend another few months in my closet. Maybe one day I'll be able to let it go. Maybe one day I'll actually wear it...
It's interesting to see someone do the same thing and compare results! I like when you talk about being sustainable, since it's been also one of my main motivations to be more mindful with my wardrobe and clothing. Great video! ❀

    • @elliejeanroyden
      @elliejeanroyden  Pƙed rokem +4

I actually really believe in the “but what if I need it someday”!! I think the internet really pushes you against that and acts as if it’s silly but it’s not always. If you can think of a specific situation when you might need it (even if it’s for a Halloween costume) then I think you should keep it, it’s so easy to let things go and then end up replacing them! Also sentimentality is fine as long as you don’t let yourself be sentimental about EVERYTHING!

Most times I choose my outfits based on weather and other conditions related to practical issues.
And it leads to the situation when I am literally stuck into choosing one particular outfit for a months or so. I mean, right now it’s spring where I live, and it’s around 0 C degrees, it’s tricky and extremely slippery. I have many other lovely shoes, but they are kind of slippery on the ice, and I usually wear them in autumn before the snow.
Now I am stuck to 1 pair of combat boots which let me walk safely without falling down. This is it. I am literally stuck to one particular pair of boots and pair of trousers which go well with these boots. I change sweaters and tops, but I still get “stuck in one outfit” feeling. I don’t want to have many similar combat boots, I don’t need them.
I also don’t want to wear skirts with these combat boots, it doesn’t suit my aesthetic.
    đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïžđŸ˜„
I still look great in boots and trousers, I know it, but these days I sometimes become bored of them. But safety goes first; and health goes first. Heels and dresses can wait until it’s safe to walk down the streets without danger of falling and breaking bones.

It's very true that charity shops get too many clothes (mostly non recyclable) and they never go out front of store. I've worked in a few charity shops and all have a back room or basement of thousands of clothes in bags going out to the bins each week. I recommend people donating other things or at least going on and asking them what they'd like donated. Same with food banks getting random tins of potato or mushy peas that when packages are made for people don't really get used because it's not an easy item to make a meal from unless you have specific other foods. It's better to donate meals or at least with something you happily eat on its own and feel sustained such as spaghetti bol or beans (as bread will always be given for toast) or ready mixed pasta packets.

One reason I get use out of all of my clothes is bc when I don't know or care what to wear that day, I close my eyes and spin around in front of part of my wardrobe that hasn't been getting much love or variety lately (hats, dresses, skirts, tights, necklaces, etc). I have to style an outfit around whatever I'm pointing at when I open my eyes. If I really can't or don't want to style an outfit around that item, it makes me think maybe it doesn't fit in with my wardrobe. This also gets me wearing outfits I wouldn't normally think of because I'm picking at random!

To 11.57: i was shocked by a documentary about used clothes that unveiled, that the clothes that are not sellable anymore (for example all clothes that are made of not natural materials like polyester etc.) will be "donated" to countries like bulgaria, where they are used as heating materials in the ovens of poor people. We support this very toxic heating method with buying and donating this stuff!

I kind of started taking pics of my outfits a bit over a year ago and it has shown itself very useful because sometimes I want to wear a piece, but i am not sure how. and working from home - i don’t really get out much so wearing “outside of home clothes” has become infrequent. Especially with things that are for special occasions and more formal. I have little of those - but still I wear the so rarely that I just forget how I combined them and styled them
It has really helped for me to wear each item more and feel like it’s fun and novelty every time
TL;DR: recording outfits you liked can really help in wearing the pieces more
edit: now that i watched the whole video , i realose that what i am doing is definitely not “recording” because i dont do many details, i just have one google photo folder with pics 😅

I dislike the woooooooof noise that has recently been in the videos. I’m super sensitive to sounds due to a head injury đŸ€• I struggle to balance the volume to hear your voice but not that sound. Love your videos! ❀

Same. The sound is too deep and growly and is nervous system activating.

I love this topic and completly agree about heels! They are useless and I don't even know any people who wear heels anymore in every day life. I used to wear heeled booties in winter because they are cute but nowadays I value my comfort and foot health more. đŸ€—

Hi Ellie Jean,Thanks for the offer to type me (kibbe) but I just had it done FG ,my ""problem "" is I think I am a bright spring so have many color possibilities, and also I also have many things in my figure wider sholders ,more bosom ,but also all other elements as normally built (not extremely long arms legs) but big eyes , full lips, square face normal nose,so a DC ,N and FG can all ,as long as its average wide ,and long ,Colours Patrons ,everything is posible ,but the best look is one colour with a bright accent( Olivia Munn .Liv Taylor and Audrey ;) (and i want to thank you for youre clear tips from kibbe/colour advice thanks for everything !!!! gr Sigrid

That section about charity shops and Ghana needs to be put entirely onto the backs of those charities; they did this under the radar and told no one about it. They should be fined for it for malpractice. This isn't the people's fault for donating. There could be a business opportunity here for clothes recycling in the UK.
