It's absolutely disgusting that you have to know the 'system' to get benefits. Some just don't have the energy to fight the system and there is no help available from government. Psychologists don't interfere with benefits and that makes the problem worse. It's just all absolutely appalling.

CAB know the rules and are empathetic.
I think support is needed to apply for PIP, the process is traumatic and causes triggers it can be extremely distressing. The more difficult it is to cope with the process the greater the chances you need and deserve it.
Expert help from the CAB helps in several ways, firstly because they can do the form in a much shorter time than alone or with somebody without training. That reduces the distress to a more tolerable level.
Secondly it seems that if the PIP assessment staff are aware CAB have been involved it is an indication you won't be fobbed off so easily and the form will be more consistent and accurate. Most people are refused on the first attempt but eventually are successful if not deterred by the obstacles caused by an intimidating system.
Some CAB staff are trained so well and have so much practice they can tell you exactly what you need to obtain as evidence and prevent you doing a lot of unnecessary work.
It is much easier to meet the deadline if you have help, if you go prepared it's possible to complete the form and post it ( recorded delivery) immediately after your appointment.
In some places CAB advice is extremely hard to get, it is so valuable be prepared to go to great lengths to get it. Sometimes in the past they do home visits but I don't know if this is still possible.

Hello Charlie. UNRELATED to this particular video, I just wanted to offer you a heartfelt "THANKYOU" for the advice you've offered across your posts. A few days ago I was awarded P.I.P. at my first attempt. Without your knowledge and selfless dedication to those of us who really need it, I doubt this would have been possible. To everyone reading this, please take Charlie's advice and heed it (especially as it takes a huge toll on her to produce these videos). Pause, take notes, pause, take notes and so on. Once again Charlie, thankyou very much indeed. You truly are our hero. x x

how long did you have to wait? i got phone call interview 4 weeks after applying online. i'm expecting the worst and am ready to go to appeal if that should be the case. i just don't see how they can diagnose and agree with conditions over the phone and not face to face? not that i'm bothered coz what i have is medically proven and i don't lie just to get a bit of help unlike the woman who this week has to pay back about £600k as she said she was disabled but put a photo of her tossing a xmas tree in an event! omg! i can't even pick up a friggin' kettle!

Charlie is angelic; her advice is clear & that is so helpful because the stress makes clear thinking difficult or impossible at times because she suffers from illnesses herself so knows. The assessors ; changed their name prob because 'ATOS' was so associated with causing suicides due to cruel and unfair assessment methods. The Tories ( royals etc) have destroyed this country for non billionaires using poverty, 'pandemics' ( created in labs for depopulation & profit of trillions from 'vxines' with many MPs & PMs having shares in these Pharma companies. Look up.'World Ecnomic Forum' if you want to know who Tories, Royals work for ie not the people but global club of worlds richest who openly say billions of 'Useless Eaters' must die). Sorry if this is worrying but it's what is happening in UK and worldwide ie starting with elderly, ill, disabled, poorer etc genocide. Hancock and Johnson killed at least 40 thou elderly in care homes and laughed about it. Cameron started 'Austerity' ie severe poverty which continues.

Charlie I didn't apply for PIP fir years because of the horror stories. I finally applied last October with the help of a friend who helps people apply for PIP. Well just over 2 weeks ago I had a telephone assessment and less than 2 weeks later I got a text informing me I have been award it. I struggled with my mental health for years and last year it became obvious I wasn't coping with work, yet again. SSP is not enough to live off. I cashed in my 2 small work pensions to help me through this. Such as relief I don't have to worry so much now.

The best thing you can do is get your Lead Practitioner and / or Shrink to send a supporting letter. And send your clinic letters. That was it for me! Maybe i just got lucky. I did not originally think I deserved PIP for my Mental Health. That there were people out there who deserved it more than me. My husband begged and begged for me to apply. So I eventually did. I filled the forms out and after many appeals, but before going to the tribunal, I actually was awarded PIP, I felt guilty at first, but don't just think of yourself (I always put myself down), but think how much this is affecting the family and how much they do that you used to do, or just cant manage. My Mental Health was affecting our finances in a huge way. It really helps if you get PIP. If your Health is impacting your finances, or you cant afford to do the things that would help you, then you should apply for PIP.

If you get 4 points for needing social support when communicating with others, you should get also get the full 12 points for preparing and following journeys. If you cannot go anywhere alone, then you need a PERSON to be with you when outside the house, whether that's going to the doctor, or going to a show. If having someone with you makes you able to do these things, then it's at least 4 points in the communicating question and 12 in the journey one. The DWP will not make that connection themselves, though, you have to make it for them.

Excellent video, as someone who has multiple conditions and worked in Mental Health, this is great a clear explanation of how having an illness and the system works. Totally agree that it is how you communicate your disability. The point about learning to understand and accept disability is important as many are in denial and the system takes advantage of this, even knowing this I still think I can do things when I spend most of my time in bed due to my multiple conditions due to pain, fatigue and mood. Good point on SCAR process which is comparable to STAR process when knowing how to evidence competencies which is effectively is the descriptors.

Thank you for sharing this! Is it best to list every single condition separately, such as ADHD, fatigue, depression, etc, or, list the ones that affect you the most and then say, e.g. ‘because of ADHD I have fatigue which causes me to stay in bed’? Also, I’m not quite sure if when addressing points for each section I need to mention how each condition affects it, e.g. ‘Every day, I can’t prepare food because my ADHD distracts me and I have to be prompted’ and also say, ‘My partner has to prepare food for me because I experience fatigue due to my conditions (combined)’? Maybe I’m overthinking things - typical! Thank you for the help :)

I would argue that mobility is relevant with mental health. Being acutely depressed can have a MASSIVE impact on mobility. An assessor told me that I was “choosing” not to get out of bed and mobilise. That infuriated me. I’m waiting for them to make a decision, but I will be appealing and have readied myself to go right the way through to tribunal. The process has been humiliating and frustrating so far.

From the bottom of my heart, and through tear-streaked cheeks I say a massive THANK YOU, Charlie. I don't feel as scared to tackle the review questionnaire now. Just one thing more - I don't know if you are aware, the review has to be done on paper, written. PIP? It is soon to change. It is alleged that money payments is going to be replaced by vouchers. This is in talks at the moment and the DWP has not confirmed this. If cash payments are replaced with vouchers then what is the point in claiming? I sure do hope PIP payments are not changed.

Although I do have to say, until I experienced ME and fibro, and everything else on top of that, I never thought about what other people were going through unless it was very visible.

hi charlie. had my phone call on monday and spent the entire 90mins crying. left me feeling even crappier that i actually do feel! it's so draining emotionally and then having to wait 4 months for an outcome? the interview was the total opposite of facebook isn't it? facebook just tells us saddos how wonderful and enriching their lives are and how rich and successful they are whilst the capita phone call just makes you go over all the things you used to do but can't now. with my gp telling me (on a phone call ) to "google it" after a 19 minute phone call that says it all really doesn't it? i kept telling capita to get the recording from the docs to listen to it if possible because i think even she seemed a bit taken aback at the google comment. we are being treated like elephants in the wild - just get on with the pain and go die quietly in some corner.....

(She sits next to me if my hands are full but I then can't walk away without her) Since I'm not able to complete these actions without her would she count as an aid or something? I mean asking me to function without her would be like asking my mum to read something without her glasses, it wouldn't work. Also love to everyone going through this process, your not alone.

( I did win pip and have been on since last yr ) but I stopped taking meds after a wk because of side effects..... I don't touch any pharma drugs at all for anything... You start on 1 drug that leads to 2 then leads to more and majority of the pills are for side effects, my psych meds hhad side effect pills for the side effect pills, thats 3 meds i would of been on jist for the 1 pill let alone what other issues the pills would have given me and gotten me put on more. ( This is a personal opinion about meds and if ppl want to take the meds then good for them )

That's like me, I developed agoraphobia and health anxiety back in 2013 on top of anxiety and depression and haven't taken meds since 2015 because I believe they are no use and toxic to the body...I also have a massive fear of doctors and hospitals aswell.
If they try to use that against me..I believe its a good case for discrimination against my mental disorders and therapy choices.

Hi Charlie. Please Could you do a video regarding the new reforms the prime minister wants to legislate and had primarily focused on welfare (including PIP) and getting back into work for people with mental health illness(es)? My daughter has many friends who won’t apply for PIP bc they don’t think they’d win their claim because of the stigma with mental health. Also, you mention in your videos about having the diagnosis in writing. My daughter couldn’t even get a GP phone call and when she went online to book an appointment, non available. Ordered one a few days later and is waiting 2 weeks. She has mentioned to me that a few friends who have long Covid have been ridiculed by GP and other healthcare professionals and this goes hand in hand with mental health. I’m so glad that you do these videos which help so many of us with our visible and non-visible conditions and illness.

I disagree with budgeting. I'd suggest saying that you need promting to make budgeting decisions. It's not about spending money you haven't got, it's about paying bills that need to be paid, making sure your money is going in to the bank to pay those bills .' I recently failed to be bothered to check and I'd not been paid for 4 months which caused a knock on effect of bills bouncing. I needed prompting to check it. I needed assistance to sort it and I really need weekly assistance to check it and I just don't bother. '
It could also be that you don't understand the value of money. But that's not depression.
You can get 2 points here.
