So do s thought experiment. Imagine you ask them if they'd be willing to sign a reciprocal contract. IE if you do X task you're legally guaranteed a promotion under specific terms. No? Well, then.... Imagine engaging any other supplier on the basis of "if you give us X we'll probably compensate you, but no promises".

Nope. A lot of people will read this but they’ll need more than just hearing this so they can finally be just a bit happier at work. Saying “no” at work sometimes requires confidence and conviction that some folks just don’t have, not to mention, says No is sometimes also about picking and choosing your battles that some folks don’t know how to do. Yup. You just have to decide if you're going to be a doormat or a person. You're not a slave, they don't own you, working for an employer is a two way street. They need you too. If you don't want to work weekends? Or do overtime? Just say *"No."* You have a life, they can't just assume that you're free to work whenever they ask for it. The only time they can assume you are 'free' to work for them is during your regularly scheduled work hours.

Because they don't care about long-term productivity. They'd rather work their people until they're no longer productive and then replace them with entry-level freshly graduated employees. The workers become a resource like pens and paper.

We lost some people and need to play catch-up... gee, where have I heard that before?? Even on a factory floor with OT pay it's annoying. You lose people because they don't have a couple of days to unwind, then you force everyone else to work more, then you hire more people, then you lose others, then you hire more, then you lose.....
This movie literally scared me away from office jobs. I chose to live a life where I'd never spend a day in an office so I got an apprenticeship as a boilermaker. I left that a couple of years after I became a tradesman wanting more of a challange and so I joined the Army. After 14 years in the Army, with promotions and change of the organisation I am literally living the life of Office Space now. After morning PT, I spend my days in an office doing administration and planning.
Had a boss where I’d sometimes be working 14 + hours and on weekends in physically challenging conditions, and that boss was awesome. He would be right there beside you, working just as hard. One day he filled my car, explaining how much he appreciated the work I was doing and how lucky he felt that I worked there. Later I realized this farmer naturally exemplified all the qualities of an excellent leader. He would not ask anyone to do anything he would not do himself, he would not tolerate a malingering or disruptive employee, he would recognize hard work and genuinely appreciated it, and if you were honest and generally competent- if you made a mistake you’d hear about it, fix it, and move on... This bad boss was played perfectly, half focused on stretching his shoulders- a subtle way to say you aren’t worth my full attention, even when I’m assigning you to work the weekend with no notice...
Some people don’t realize that weekends are sacred to most people who ACTUALLY work and MOST people don’t live to work. The therapist was a genius IMO. Too bad he wasn’t around to see it.
Met plenty of people who all they do is talk about work when they aren't at work. That means they love it. Even their friends an family sometimes would tell me the stories because they obviously told everyone. Sometimes the stories ain't bad and you can tell they legit do like their job. I know people who retired an got jobs again. Some people probably don't wanna go home (for good reason). But If you dislike something you wouldn't talk of it much an would avoid people who try to make you talk of it.
I remember reading a piece online that I think as in the New Yorker. It was titled something like, "Can't work more than 9 to 5? Good luck building a career!" The person who wrote it got such backlash she had to delete her social media accounts. She basically admitted she let someone go because even though he was always there a little bit early and did a good job he refused to work past 5 pm or answer calls after hours or on the weekend. It's like, so he had boundaries?
I was out of work for 6 months or so during the “plandemic.” The weekends DID seem to matter less as the days came and went without a means of filling my days in with work. Besides just having to pay bills, it was mentally tough with feeling like I was worthless, as I worked a niche field, was very talented in it, and NOBODY seemingly wanted me. Once I found a job that I felt was potentially a more “secure” position in a different industry, and direction I took it. Weekends became more important to me again, but it meant every other Saturday as a work day. 😒 It gave value back to the weekends, but it also made me finish my Saturday work faster than I would’ve if it was my weekday work.
When Lumbergh does that stretch right as he asks Peter to come in on Sunday. So many flashbacks to jobs where my boss did this to me. Little bit of rage still burning in the loins.
This is every week for OTR drivers. I once had a dispatcher who counted the day you turn in your truck after a 3 month tour as a day off. So you finish work at 2 pm, & that day counts as 1 of your days off. I started telling him how many days I would be taking off after a tour, always more than the company policy, fully prepared to be fired on the spot. Amazingly, they did not fire me nor even protest, but they did have a "You can't do that" shock look on their face.
Love it when the therapist says "wow that's messed up". Reminds of the time I went to the doctor with a bad ear infection and when he looked in my ear with that scope with the light in it said "geez, that hurts me to look at that".
That's why I just pretend my dreams are the real world and work is just some horrible horrible nightmare that will soon be over. Except it just sucks when I have horrible nightmares about work

Bill Lundberg reminds me of my old boss. In fact, he reminds me of certain bosses that I have come face to face with. Making you work weekends, even on Sunday, which despite the fact that there's a place in Hell for that. And the worst thing they can do is switch orders on the fly. I know this is three months old, but I had to comment!! I once worked in retail for Lillian Vernon over 15 years ago at Potomac Mills Mall, and what I personally hated was when I would have a couple of days off one particular week... and out of the f-cking blue my assistant manager (I dont consider it "Maria's" fault though... but the manager above her, Michelle... this older overweight Black woman) I'd be enjoying my day off and get a call from them that said I was supposed to be working that day. I'm all confused at that and being around 19 years old... I go in anyway and eventually notice (our schedules were on paper) that my schedule for the day I had off, someone had put white-out on top of what it would have said underneith (i.e. "OFF" probably) and then someone wrote a time to come in on top of the white out.) I spoke to them about it and Michelle the store manager told me that they were "ALLOWED to give only 24 hours notice if the store decided to change its mind and have you come in anyway." UGH. I really don't like Lillian Vernon (it's a nick-nack store for "old ladies" for those who don't know.) I was a very young woman at the time and these a-hole managers would make me stay till 11pm (the mall closes at 10pm, BUT some of us would have to stay a little later to count money etc.) They would have me go with them to put the money in the bank outside of the mall because they were "afraid" to do it by themselves. This manager NEVER told me I had to do that before she hired me. I had no car and my dad was the one who'd pick me up at the HOUR that they SAID I was to leave and clock out. That's my point! (sorry for "yelling by the way... just venting this old story. : P) You were never allowed to leave at the time you were SUPPOSE TO and was TOLD TO LEAVE, and Lillian Vernon never gave people concrete days off (they were allowed to change their minds within 24 hours before the day off.) They never let you sit if there were no customers and nothing to do. People should not stand all damned day. It's Not Healthy for your Feet. : )

We need more movies like this and old school action/sci-fi movies like Terminator, Commando, Rambo, Predator, Matrix etc. And no more focusing on CGI effects and actually put effort in story and character development! The first time I watched this movie, I was inspired to quit my job 4 hrs after watching it. Never regretted leaving either. Forced over time will forever be the main reason we lose workers and the morale.
I was a busy computer Sergeant in the Air Force and for awhile they worked us 7 days a week, until I stopped coming in on Sunday. Everybody was like "Whoa, Sergeant Haynes is going to get in HUGE trouble!!!!!"
I used to work at a place that had just enough employees to keep the store running. Assuming everyone came in on time, everyone hustled their ass off all day at work and no one was missing that day, the workload for that day could be met. Barely. Ofcourse, in a store with 60 employees, something is bound to go wrong with at least one of them pretty much every day. So every day, the manager would come by and ask us to work overtime to compensate for the loss of time from whatever went wrong that day. Wasn't always much. Sometimes, it was as little as half an hour and sometimes it was as much as 3-4 extra hours, but it did happen almost every single day. At one point, it got so bad that the manager, his assistant and one of the secretaries had to leave their desk to work the floor for a few hours, because we simply weren't gonna make it otherwise, no matter how hard we tried. They eventually got a consultant in to assess the situation and come up with a solution. The solution was simple: 'Hire more people or be prepared to deal with a lot of disgruntled workers and a very high probability of a strike.' I don't know what came of it, because I found a different job before they could implement any changes, but that store still exists to this day so I hope they changed it for the better, for the sake of the people who still work there.
3 minutes late to work the next tuesday - written up. Made a mistake thats easily fixed and did no damage the week after that - written up. 3 weeks later you are fired because "downsizing" - after you had to train your replacement.
They see you as rebellious and not a "team player" But rest assured like the other guy said, they'll start micromanaging you and either force you out or force you to quit.

Depends if you're hourly or salaried. If you're hourly, they cannot force you to work OT (and usually don't want you to), and they also cannot force you to work more than 5 consecutive days. If you're salaried you just have to finish the work, doesn't matter how long it takes or how many days in a row. You might even have to work on vacation.
The funny part is that he didn't have to sit there and wait because the computer would have turned off at that point. Just turn the monitor off and duck out. LOL!
I knew a catalog telemarketer who worked for a boss like this years ago. She was so upset when she couldn’t go to her niece’s graduation that she canceled every single catalog order during her eight hour shift! It pays to respect employees.

This was me at my last job. You know what I did? I upped out and got a job with a high level of manual labour, and haven't regretted anything. Also, my pay has gone up by 20%... sooo Then I discovered this film and decided it was the story of my life.

I guess none of them actually look at the man-hours, compare them to the day of the week, and then check that against what gets done. "Hmmm. Needed ten units by Friday, we only had four done by Friday. We made four on Saturday in six hours and two on Sunday in four hours. Then we paid double to expedite shipping to meet the contract. Hmmmm....the only answer is: I'm a great boss"

I’ve had plenty of interactions with bosses where they threw work for the weekends and It was simply met with “sorry I can’t, I have an appointment/previous engagement already booked” It’s a matter of picking and choosing your battles for some folks, but you can absolutely put your foot down and say you can’t work this weekend.
I totally understand this. I've been working for 2 years now and it sucks. When I was in university, I was so stressed out and kept worrying about getting a job. After so many rejections, I was just happy to be employed, but it's horrible. The office politics, having to work with people who aren't polite, feeling like you're bad at everything. I'm only 25 but knowing I have to do this for the rest of my life really depresses me
have to find something you like mate. It really does depend on what company, which industry and what job you're doing. Most important thing is - is the job right for you? (company matters too)

If you don't hate your job so much that living in your car starts seeming appealing, then you don't really hate job, you just dislike your job.

I worked at a place like this for a year, literally identical to this movie. I quit and started my own company doing tree service. I'm working outside and making 100k a year vs. 50k a year. So yeah I pretty much can relate to this movie a lot
I have a decent job as a custodian for the school district and this movie is still relatable. Lumberg to me, symbolizes the Principal and some of the other management people remind me of the stickler office people and IA's(instructional assistants) I also use the side door when I arrive and try to avoid people as often as possible....and they wonder why I love swing shift over day shift
I used to work with my hands for a living. Then my wife at the time pushed me to take an office job, because it would be better for us (money). I used to come home with sore muscles and an aching back but the pain would go away eventually. Today sitting behind a desk for 20 years I've lost feeling in my lower legs, I've gained weight and I stress over my job 24/7. Stress of the body heals, stress of the mind doesn't. It will turn your brain into a jelly mess.
Bruh, I did a desk job for 20 years, I'm the same. And I hate exercising, which is even worse. But fortunately I got into karate with some friends, I do it 2-3 days a week for the last few years and it's helped me a lot.

Especially If you are heavier or taller, there definitely is a lot of risk of permanently wearing out your body from bending, kneeling, crouching etc. in certain manual labor jobs.... Whether this is a risk you want to take is up to you.
Looked to me like Windows 95 windows superimposed on a Mac OS 7 desktop, and it closed to a Command Prompt. I read that this was designed to be a "generic" desktop that everyone in the film would be able to work with.
It isn't. I don't think it's really anything, the GUI definitely looks like Apple. Pre-Mac OS 8. The windows, the fonts, the desktop icons - except for some of the apps/windows open are clearly Windows titlebars. However, it goes back to an MS-DOS C prompt so it couldn't be Apple. Who really knows. It was probably made up like Machiner6 said with a little bit of everything.

I mean the people I work with are great, so that makes the job not terrible, but yeah we are understaffed, so getting called in is common. People (usually 65+) like bringing in old Windows Vista and XP machines loaded with malware proclaiming that they had paid nearly a grand for it and they can't believe it's already dying.
I REALLY need to see this film some day, every clip I see is brilliant, and I've liked the actor there ever since he played Nixon in Band of Brothers. Now, as I consider pouring myself a glass of Vat 69, one thing occurs to me: Every guy in it wouldn't look THAT out of place these days if they walked by you except that incredibly annoying manager: EVERYTHING about him: Shirt, hair, tie, etc SCREAMS 1990s. He couldn't be more 1990s if he tried.
The time to avoid this is when you are in college and trying to come with a major. If not then, then do a bit of research on the company you are applying to. It's like, if you go to work for GE and you trust Jeff Immelt to run the company like a sane man, well, you're basically screwed.

I'm getting ready to go to work to a place just like this. Today is cake day. Our senior management hasn't a clue about how to grow sales-we're flat in an industry of 10% growth.. Half our workforce is high. We're on our 4th set of outside consultants on operations improvements. Upper level managers promote based on "bromances". I spend the majority of my time each day looking for another job, managing my 401k, and keeping a low profile. I kid you not, I actually took a half day off, and no one noticed.
When I was in Highschool I worked at a Wendy’s. Without exaggeration, every day I had off my general manager would call or text me asking if I could come in. I would never respond. She already had me working 30+ hour weeks. Which btw, she would always try to work me as close to 40 as possible without going over, cause if I was at 40 or more then I would have to get more pay and benefits. I tried explaining how I’m in Highschool and need time to do schoolwork, to no avail. I ended up putting in my 2 weeks my senior year. I actually liked working there. I loved all the other mangers and employees, a good amount of the staff were even friends that went to my school. But the GM was just that bad. It was one of those scenarios where nothing you do is right, even though I worked there for years and was always efficient, she always had something to criticize. No lie, I would get stressed whenever I saw her come in for work during one of my shifts. Just seeing her was like a Pavlovian response for me getting in a bad mood.

Your manager did that because you were good at your job. It's up to management to find more good workers so they don't impose too much work on the best workers.
I've had a manager just like him. Of course that situation eventually ended, when I clocked him pretty solid and he had a 20 minute nap on the floor. I was received my my employment that day. It was worth it.

In this market for Software Engineers you would most likely get higher pay moving to another company.

This movie literally scared me away from office jobs. I chose to live a life where I'd never spend a day in an office so I got an apprenticeship as a boilermaker. I left that a couple of years after I became a tradesman wanting more of a challange and so I joined the Army. After 14 years in the Army, with promotions and change of the organisation I am literally living the life of Office Space now. After morning PT, I spend my days in an office doing administration and planning.
Had a boss where I’d sometimes be working 14 + hours and on weekends in physically challenging conditions, and that boss was awesome. He would be right there beside you, working just as hard. One day he filled my car, explaining how much he appreciated the work I was doing and how lucky he felt that I worked there.
Later I realized this farmer naturally exemplified all the qualities of an excellent leader. He would not ask anyone to do anything he would not do himself, he would not tolerate a malingering or disruptive employee, he would recognize hard work and genuinely appreciated it, and if you were honest and generally competent- if you made a mistake you’d hear about it, fix it, and move on...
This bad boss was played perfectly, half focused on stretching his shoulders- a subtle way to say you aren’t worth my full attention, even when I’m assigning you to work the weekend with no notice...
Watching the movie as a kid, we laughed. Watching it as an adult, we cry.

Met plenty of people who all they do is talk about work when they aren't at work. That means they love it. Even their friends an family sometimes would tell me the stories because they obviously told everyone. Sometimes the stories ain't bad and you can tell they legit do like their job. I know people who retired an got jobs again. Some people probably don't wanna go home (for good reason).
But If you dislike something you wouldn't talk of it much an would avoid people who try to make you talk of it.

The person who wrote it got such backlash she had to delete her social media accounts. It's like, so he had boundaries?

I was out of work for 6 months or so during the “plandemic.” The weekends DID seem to matter less as the days came and went without a means of filling my days in with work. Besides just having to pay bills, it was mentally tough with feeling like I was worthless, as I worked a niche field, was very talented in it, and NOBODY seemingly wanted me. Once I found a job that I felt was potentially a more “secure” position in a different industry, and direction I took it. Weekends became more important to me again, but it meant every other Saturday as a work day. 😒 It gave value back to the weekends, but it also made me finish my Saturday work faster than I would’ve if it was my weekday work.
When Lumbergh does that stretch right as he asks Peter to come in on Sunday. So many flashbacks to jobs where my boss did this to me. Little bit of rage still burning in the loins.

This is every week for OTR drivers. I once had a dispatcher who counted the day you turn in your truck after a 3 month tour as a day off. So you finish work at 2 pm, & that day counts as 1 of your days off. I started telling him how many days I would be taking off after a tour, always more than the company policy, fully prepared to be fired on the spot. Amazingly, they did not fire me nor even protest, but they did have a "You can't do that" shock look on their face.
Love it when the therapist says "wow that's messed up". Reminds of the time I went to the doctor with a bad ear infection and when he looked in my ear with that scope with the light in it said "geez, that hurts me to look at that".
That's why I just pretend my dreams are the real world and work is just some horrible horrible nightmare that will soon be over. Except it just sucks when I have horrible nightmares about work

Funny how I've never done software programming, or worked in a cubicle, but can relate to everything in this movie. Mike Judge just nailed it.
Bill Lundberg reminds me of my old boss. In fact, he reminds me of certain bosses that I have come face to face with. Making you work weekends, even on Sunday, which despite the fact that there's a place in Hell for that. And the worst thing they can do is switch orders on the fly. I really hate it when they do that! "We lost some people at our job." Gee! I wonder why? Thank God I don't have a boss like that anymore, and I hope I never will.

I know this is three months old, but I had to comment!! I once worked in retail for Lillian Vernon over 15 years ago at Potomac Mills Mall, and what I personally hated was when I would have a couple of days off one particular week... and out of the f-cking blue my assistant manager (I dont consider it "Maria's" fault though... but the manager above her, Michelle... this older overweight Black woman) I'd be enjoying my day off and get a call from them that said I was supposed to be working that day. I'm all confused at that and being around 19 years old... I go in anyway and eventually notice (our schedules were on paper) that my schedule for the day I had off, someone had put white-out on top of what it would have said underneith (i.e. "OFF" probably) and then someone wrote a time to come in on top of the white out.)
I spoke to them about it and Michelle the store manager told me that they were "ALLOWED to give only 24 hours notice if the store decided to change its mind and have you come in anyway." UGH. I really don't like Lillian Vernon (it's a nick-nack store for "old ladies" for those who don't know.) I was a very young woman at the time and these a-hole managers would make me stay till 11pm (the mall closes at 10pm, BUT some of us would have to stay a little later to count money etc.) They would have me go with them to put the money in the bank outside of the mall because they were "afraid" to do it by themselves.
This manager NEVER told me I had to do that before she hired me. I had no car and my dad was the one who'd pick me up at the HOUR that they SAID I was to leave and clock out. That's my point! (sorry for "yelling by the way... just venting this old story. : P) You were never allowed to leave at the time you were SUPPOSE TO and was TOLD TO LEAVE, and Lillian Vernon never gave people concrete days off (they were allowed to change their minds within 24 hours before the day off.) They never let you sit if there were no customers and nothing to do. People should not stand all damned day. It's Not Healthy for your Feet. : )

I was a busy computer Sergeant in the Air Force and for awhile they worked us 7 days a week, until I stopped coming in on Sunday. Everybody was like "Whoa, Sergeant Haynes is going to get in HUGE trouble!!!!!"
Office Space is one of the greatest comedies of all time
I used to work at a place that had just enough employees to keep the store running. Assuming everyone came in on time, everyone hustled their ass off all day at work and no one was missing that day, the workload for that day could be met. Barely. Ofcourse, in a store with 60 employees, something is bound to go wrong with at least one of them pretty much every day. So every day, the manager would come by and ask us to work overtime to compensate for the loss of time from whatever went wrong that day. Wasn't always much. Sometimes, it was as little as half an hour and sometimes it was as much as 3-4 extra hours, but it did happen almost every single day. At one point, it got so bad that the manager, his assistant and one of the secretaries had to leave their desk to work the floor for a few hours, because we simply weren't gonna make it otherwise, no matter how hard we tried.
They eventually got a consultant in to assess the situation and come up with a solution. The solution was simple: 'Hire more people or be prepared to deal with a lot of disgruntled workers and a very high probability of a strike.' I don't know what came of it, because I found a different job before they could implement any changes, but that store still exists to this day so I hope they changed it for the better, for the sake of the people who still work there.

Depends if you're hourly or salaried. If you're hourly, they cannot force you to work OT (and usually don't want you to), and they also cannot force you to work more than 5 consecutive days. If you're salaried you just have to finish the work, doesn't matter how long it takes or how many days in a row. You might even have to work on vacation.
The funny part is that he didn't have to sit there and wait because the computer would have turned off at that point. Just turn the monitor off and duck out. LOL!

Where I work, people actually slack off all day so they can get paid OT on the weekends, and management thinks they are really finding ways to promote teamwork, increase morale, and ramp up productivity. I guess none of them actually look at the man-hours, compare them to the day of the week, and then check that against what gets done. "Hmmm. Needed ten units by Friday, we only had four done by Friday. We made four on Saturday in six hours and two on Sunday in four hours. Then we paid double to expedite shipping to meet the contract. Hmmmm....the only answer is: I'm a great boss"

I totally understand this. I've been working for 2 years now and it sucks. When I was in university, I was so stressed out and kept worrying about getting a job. After so many rejections, I was just happy to be employed, but it's horrible. The office politics, having to work with people who aren't polite, feeling like you're bad at everything. I'm only 25 but knowing I have to do this for the rest of my life really depresses me

Today sitting behind a desk for 20 years I've lost feeling in my lower legs, I've gained weight and I stress over my job 24/7. Stress of the body heals, stress of the mind doesn't. It will turn your brain into a jelly mess.
Bruh, I did a desk job for 20 years, I'm the same. And I hate exercising, which is even worse. But fortunately I got into karate with some friends, I do it 2-3 days a week for the last few years and it's helped me a lot.

Especially If you are heavier or taller, there definitely is a lot of risk of permanently wearing out your body from bending, kneeling, crouching etc. in certain manual labor jobs.... Whether this is a risk you want to take is up to you.

Looked to me like Windows 95 windows superimposed on a Mac OS 7 desktop, and it closed to a Command Prompt. I read that this was designed to be a "generic" desktop that everyone in the film would be able to work with.

It isn't. I don't think it's really anything, the GUI definitely looks like Apple. Pre-Mac OS 8. The windows, the fonts, the desktop icons - except for some of the apps/windows open are clearly Windows titlebars. However, it goes back to an MS-DOS C prompt so it couldn't be Apple. Who really knows. It was probably made up like Machiner6 said with a little bit of everything.

I mean the people I work with are great, so that makes the job not terrible, but yeah we are understaffed, so getting called in is common. People (usually 65+) like bringing in old Windows Vista and XP machines loaded with malware proclaiming that they had paid nearly a grand for it and they can't believe it's already dying.

The time to avoid this is when you are in college and trying to come with a major. If not then, then do a bit of research on the company you are applying to. It's like, if you go to work for GE and you trust Jeff Immelt to run the company like a sane man, well, you're basically screwed.
This hit home so hard for me at one point in my life I literally said that to a psychiatrist and asked him the same thing -- can you just give me something to zonk me out for a few years? He said no. :^(
I'm getting ready to go to work to a place just like this. Today is cake day. Our senior management hasn't a clue about how to grow sales-we're flat in an industry of 10% growth.. Half our workforce is high. We're on our 4th set of outside consultants on operations improvements. Upper level managers promote based on "bromances". I spend the majority of my time each day looking for another job, managing my 401k, and keeping a low profile. I kid you not, I actually took a half day off, and no one noticed.
When I was in Highschool I worked at a Wendy’s. Without exaggeration, every day I had off my general manager would call or text me asking if I could come in. I would never respond. She already had me working 30+ hour weeks. Which btw, she would always try to work me as close to 40 as possible without going over, cause if I was at 40 or more then I would have to get more pay and benefits. I tried explaining how I’m in Highschool and need time to do schoolwork, to no avail.
I ended up putting in my 2 weeks my senior year. I actually liked working there. I loved all the other mangers and employees, a good amount of the staff were even friends that went to my school. But the GM was just that bad. It was one of those scenarios where nothing you do is right, even though I worked there for years and was always efficient, she always had something to criticize. No lie, I would get stressed whenever I saw her come in for work during one of my shifts. Just seeing her was like a Pavlovian response for me getting in a bad mood.

Your manager did that because you were good at your job. It's up to management to find more good workers so they don't impose too much work on the best workers.
I've had a manager just like him. Of course that situation eventually ended, when I clocked him pretty solid and he had a 20 minute nap on the floor. I was received my my employment that day. It was worth it.
