We got our GSD a couple months after our first granddaughter was born. Now they're both 2 and I no longer allow my granddaughter and GSD to be on the floor together because she is very hyper and loves to jump up and chase. I've never seen any form of aggression from my GSD to the baby but I don't trust her to not possibly cause injury by accident. If the baby is in her playpen we allow our GSD to be out and about but if the baby is on the floor playing or running around the house the dog is crated in the living room. She's a good dog and is obedient but she's still a dog.... Love your videos, you help so many. Thanks ❤

Yes you not only have to train the dog but you have to train the children too.

My rescue was a street dog. One of the hardest behaviors I struggle with my dog is to keep her from picking up stuff from the ground. I just keep working on leave it and drop it and when necessary, I manually force her to out the item.

Parents also need to learn how to read their dogs body language. T h e dog needs a place to get away too where children aren't allowed to go.

I totally agree with the whole taking away a privilege. When my dogs decide to chew up their bed and most the time it was because they got mad either they weren’t the 1s getting to go to the park or if they are in the crate and they aren’t outside with the other dogs. And 1 dog had an upset stomach thought eating her bed would make her feel better and then threw up the cushion part. They chew their bed up they get their bed taken away until I feel like they learn their lesson. Normally they are without a bed for several months to a year. Found out our GSD has hip dysplasia at 2 years old and I felt she needed a bed for her hips and she hasn’t even tried to chew her bed. That’s how ik she missed having a bed. She’s at least on pain meds and joint supplements. But unfortunately she has to have both hips replaced costing $5-10K per hip.

Great podcast, can't wait for the next one! One of the guys touched on an incident where there was a dog outside the yard that wanted to go their dog while on a walk and said - quite rightly - it could have ended so differently if he was someone that didn't know what to do. I am SO sick of that in my area and only have a few very specific roads I walk my dogs for that reason. Would love to see a video where you explain what to do in several situations of dogs going for yours out and about off leash. Please and thank you! 😁

Another thing that is important to develop early with your puppy is the drive to play.

Pass the baby around to everyone in the house. There was a baby cousin that was layed by mom on my service dog and dad went to pick him up and my dog growled at him so I had to pick baby up and pass it back and forth with dad.

We did the fake baby and playing baby crying on my phone. Then when I had him, we brought home stuff that had his scent on it for let the dog smell. When we got home, we let the dog check out my son while we were holding him. With my 7 month old doberman. I have been socializing her since 10 weeks old with people. I train her regularly at dog friendly stores, like Home Depot. I always make it a point to ask the parents with young kids if my puppy can meet them. We’re going through the jumping phase and she’ll try to jump on everyone except kids. Which is great cause she’s a big girl at almost 60 lbs.

The taking the privilege away/giving back topic is so so true. My dog is a german shepherd and doesn't resource guard at all currently. I kick him off furniture and invite him on as I want him there/not there. And he does great. Never invites himself on.

I dog sit a 2 year old Mal who has great obedience. They have a 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son that she is absolutely fantastic with. She has great maternal instincts and whenever a child would cry in public she would want to go check and make sure they’re okay. It was the same thing with women. But with that maternal instinct comes natural “puppy parenting” tendencies and even though she had a very high tolerance for child shenanigans, if the kids started playing too rough she was not afraid to nip them to correct their behavior. Their son was old enough to understand what it meant but their daughter would get spooked by it.

Most of my siblings have dogs and kids ,i help them as much as i can so they don't have to get rid of any dogs, my sister has two german shepherds . one was amazing with kids and obedance and the other one was hyper and less trained .

It’s so informative to hear all trainers advice. Our 11 month old GSD has done well with obedience except ‘drop it’ especially tug toy. I have tooth bruises everywhere. Haven’t found video on ‘out’ or ‘drop’. Advice?

When you hand feed you should make sure the dog is looking at your eyes. Mark with “Yes” then feed by hand.

What if you don’t have a dog but family members do? I’m a little worried about how the in laws dog will react to a 2 month old baby, but I don’t live in the same state so I can’t prepare the dog…With little training he’s a “good” dog that seems to be good around mostly anyone (just needs a minute to warm up) but I don’t think he’s been around a new born

There are leash laws where I live. I had 2 bull dogs off leash charge my Rottie and I on a walk. Thankfully my guy is fully trained and I was able to keep him under control until their owner was able to get to them. It happened so fast and my dog, I believe, thought he was protecting me which is why he initially pounced them. Great information on here! My Rottie is food motivated but my GSD mix has no motivating factors. So I have to work with him differently. My Rottie is almost two and still acts like a puppy!

I personally believe there is no reason for a dog to be interacting with a newborn baby at any capacity. There is no need to expose the baby to the dog or have the dog lay with the baby, it's just irresponsible in my opinion. The dog doesn't need you showing the baby off to them, they can smell and hear the baby just fine, they know it's there. Like Tom said, a dog doesn't even have to be aggressive to harm a baby, a newborn is very fragile. A dog has no place interacting with the child until I would say they are old enough to stand and walk around on their own, and even then only under strict supervision by the parents. If either dog or child are not capable of calmly interacting with one another and respecting each other then they should not be interacting simple as that.
