  • Here we have the 2009 Toyota Prius gasoline-electric hybrid, embodying up-to-the-minute fuel-sipping methods and machinery intended to take us immaculately into a spotless future. In the other lane, the newly introduced 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI turbodiesel, a rolling relic of tried-and-true yester-tech locomotion (upon whose sooty breath the Industrial Revolution itself was built) that has been remastered, reengineered and reintroduced to be meaner, cleaner and more efficient than ever.

I sold my 2005 Jetta TDI with 114,000 miles on it last summer and got a 2013 Passat TDI SEL, with the DSG trans. The 05 sold for $10,000! That shows that the value stays up with a VW TDI over a gas car! The Passat and my other car, a 2011 red Jetta TDI are both great on fuel milage! I have gotten 52 MPG on both, one from Nashville TN to norther IN in the Jetta 6 speed manual. Then I got 54.3 MPG on the Passat from St Louis to Norther IN. I averaged 49.5 from FL and back with 2500 miles with the Jetta! The Passat has averaged 46.6 MPG on 3800 miles so far! Both are great riding cars and have lots of toque. I can get to 80 MPH in a flash with either if needed! Some talk about the “hard” plastic of the dash, I do not know about you, but I don’t often caress the dash and feel that it is cheap! Instead I am watching my MPG average and totally enjoying it.
I have had VW diesels since 1980 and I am now getting better fuel milage and better performance and horse power with these newer cars and engines. I have had very little trouble with these engines as long as I do the proper care the 9 VW diesels that I have owned. The 05 Jetta was the first car I let go before it went over 200,000 miles. One went 325,000 before the rear axle rusted off!!! So, for my money, I think that a VW TDI in any form is well worth the money!!!

Don't worry about the price. Just because the media says your car is worthless doesn't mean a thing. Tdi has proven itself for many years and they will hold their value. I want a 6 speed manual Passat. It's the best mpg car you can get in that size of sedans. Tdi all the way! Plug you can get more performance and mpg with some fun mods. Can't do anything with an ugly Prius.

One important point is to consider the type of driving you do. The Prius is better in urban driving with lots of stop-and-go that makes use of the regenerative braking. The Jetta TDI is super-efficient on the highway. My '02 Jetta TDI gets 55 MPG running on biodiesel going 55-60 MPH average on the highway.

By the way, it is very refreshing to see that there is a diesel owner that doesn't hate hybrids. If you read the post that people put, all diesel fans and owners hate hybrids while hybrid owners don't hate diesels. They say things that aren't true and make things up. I think diesel engines have come along way. I read that Acura (my favorite car maker) was going to give buyers the opinion of a diesel engine they were developing, but it was scrapped because the world's economy crashed.

you are 100% correct, what alot of people don't realize is that depending on what test you get the results will vary. One of the reasons for this as stated earlier is than for one test the standard gasoline engine may not be running 100% of the time giving inaccurate readings. Both vehicles are very clean in relation to today's vehicles, each have their benefit and negatives.

had a TDI now a Prius. Prius much better in real life. no idle ,no annoying sound ,smooth automatic ,no dual mass flywheel and dsg clutch problems. no injector and turbo issues ,fault codes. most real life driving is about red light to red light and hybrids will always be the king there. only problem is the catalytic converter theft, that's a worldwide issue

A very thorough overview of two cars with possibilities for people wanting to use less non-renewable resources. A pair of issues:
    1. Near the end, the greater cargo room in the hatchback Prius is mentioned. The VW Jetta comes in a Jetta Wagon hatchback configuration at the same price and performance, so that option is there for people who want it.
    2. An older VW diesel can burn up to 100% biodiesel (up to 5% blend for clean diesel 2009+ models), bringing oil use to zero if desired.

I have come to love my wife's 2007 Prius. It gives you everything but looks and overall speed (top speed 108). It has a lot of space inside, very nice 500 watt DSP sound system, more safety and tech features then I have ever seen in a car this size, awesome in the snow and ice and has the smoothest quietest ride ever in a small car. Oh yeah and it gets my wife 53.4mpg. The new one is even bigger, has more power, more features, and more refined then hers. I almost forgot that it gets better mpgs.

furley523 posted this; "I have an 06 TDI; the services are expensive!"
The service at VW costs $140 mainly because the the TDI uses a diesel specific full synthetic oil (505.00). You change the oil every 10,000 miles. On the other hand the Prius cost $20 for an oil change and you change it between 5,000-7,000 miles.

It has a carburated 2.0l and a 5 speed, and going from Portland to Seattle once, I achieved an average of 42MPG on one tank, as well as usually getting 27 or so mpg in town, its a very satisfying $1500 car.

I was doing 150 one night years ago, when I saw two State Troopers on the side of the highway. I slammed on the brakes, and went by them doing 65mph. Alas, it was to late. They pulled out and pulled me over. They asked if I was drinking, I said hell no. I had slowed down, but not enough in time. They clocked me doing 105. They arrested me. I paid $500 to get out just a few hours later, and my license was suspended for 3 months. In 20 years of driving like that, it was the only time I got caught.

My wife has gotten 55 mpg over the last 6,000 plus miles without even trying. I reset it after that because to tell you the truth, when you get mileage like that, you stop caring. A year ago when gas cost more then milk, I checked to see what I was getting driving her 2007 Prius to work, since I stopped driving my RL because of high fuel cost. I was getting between 66.5 - 69.7 mpg, on my 30 mile round tips to work and back. The Jetta TDI and Prius are great at not using to much fuel.

I drive it in minus 30 weather and snow. The only drawback is that VW dealers and mechanics are more difficult to find.

Traction Control along with ABS & Brake assist, DTS, VSC and the Auto Brake Power distribution cannot be switched off in a Prius but are unbelievably functional. As of personal experience, I have driven in the Nordschleife in Nürburg (Nürburgring) and am very proud of my 11:15.7 in a rainy day :D could easily overtake FWD cars in the bends because i had much more entry speed than a Bora, Passat and an A class

It is pretty cool VW can do that without AdBlue. What still amazes me though is that as efficient as the Jetta TDI is, it is not even close the the Prius numbers in the city. Go to your dealer and ask for a test drive, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to let you drive one for a few hours. Don't listen to what other people think, what matters most is what YOU think and how YOU like the car. Quite frankly, everyone who owns a Prius loves them. I've never talked to a Prius or hybrid car driver who hated their car.

@JohnCBriggs Most TDI users (09 and 10) get roughly 38 city, 44 highway. The problem is that it takes about 20,000 miles to break in the engine. As long as 60,000 miles if you don't push the engine during the first 5k miles. Once broken in, the engine makes another 3-4 mpg more than when it was new. Engine compression also increases.

It sounds to me like this video is based more on biased opinions. I've had 4 Prius's since 2001 and I wouldn't have any other car. I happened to LIKE the interior, handling, and how quiet it is. And they act like the 0-60 time is a huge difference, but it was like 1 second different. Neither car is going to win any races at the local drag strip. Also the Prius lasts to 200,000 or more miles with no mechanical problems because they are built very well. Can VW say that?

One of the reasons for increased Nox is the higher burn temperature caused by the direct injection in the tdi. If you compare the Nox in the TDI to a gasoline direct injection vehicle, i.e. 2.0T(audi) you will see that the Nox are really not that high. Even the equinox which uses direct injection suffers from increased Nox compared to a normal gasoline engine.

Of course, but, in the end, we do want electrical cars, since it doesn't have to require and run out of some sort of fuel. For now, it would be more pragmatic for just the gas engine, whether from a hybrid or non-hybrid, to be replaced by a diesel. Unfortunately demand is not high enough to invite competition but it is an evolutionary transition.

The U.S. gallon has 128 ounces in it, while Imperial gallon contains 160 ounces. That means that the miles per gallons will be rated higher in Europe, simply because there is way more fuel per gallon. Thats why cars in Europe seem to get better gas mileage and have a higher rating.

After 10k miles sold my Prius, got a Jetta Sportwagen TDI. The Prius is nice enough loaded but comfortable and exciting it's not. As for millage, I've gotten 40mpg but more often then not it's 33 to 35mpg (live in a hilly area) and I can get that with a gasser. Main reason I got rid of it is that I never felt safe driving it in bad weather. A little snow, some heavy rain and you better pray you don't have to make an emergency move. The TDI is new so it's a honymoon but so far a great car.

    Because it is not needed.
With an electric water pump, the Prius engine is the first production engine that requires no accessory belts which also further improves fuel economy.
The Toyota Prius doesn't have a single belt under it's hood. The A/C is electric, so it can be used without any loss of power or mpg.
Yes, there is an engine. Actually, there are two. A 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 98 hp/105 lb-ft plus an electric motor with 80 hp/153 lb-ft torque, powered by a 201 volt battery.

Every car has weaknesses. Every car has positives. The way this review is being presented, it is as though the TDI is the holy grail, presenting all of the TDI's positives, and all of the Prius' weaknesses. To what extent are speed, fun factor and excitement important in day-to-day commutes from home to work to the grocery store and back to home? I don't know about you, but if I wanted speed, fun factor and excitement, I'd get a Ferrari Enzo.

Both fuel efficient cars, but if you take a look back during the 80's and 90's, the VW diesels have seen upwards 60 miles to the gallon. I attest to this, though many would argue.
Then again I attest to 2 gallons per quarter mile at over 180 mph.......

On that note, I want to say that the Prius, and all other hybrids have proven worthy. The batteries in them last a lifetime, (a man in Canada exceeded 400,000mi in a 2001 Prius with the original battery and no major repairs.) Years of hybrid car ownership from Americans (11 years) proves that hybrid powered cars add a genuine alternative to the traditional gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. There are tons of different hybrid models out now. Go take one for a test drive, you'll be surprised.(:

As for your go out and buy the cheapest POS you can find... Well you could say the same thing about the Jetta TDI since it cost the same as the Prius, but its rated 16mpg less too. I think the Jetta is a nice car, I'm just not a hater.

Your right EPA are good for comparing across the board, but they really are only good for comparing vehicles of the same fuel type. Because Diesels run on a denser fuel it's a mute comparison. Also as mentioned before, EPA MPG testing consists of tests involving alot of stop and go. Even the hwy driving has stop and go, this is significantely advantageous to any hybrid as it allows the battery to regen. I'm sure u know Diesel is most at home on the hwy, steady driving and not stop and go.

replace the dot with a period. There's a calculator there and it shows real emissions specifications. You are right the jetta does put out more Nox and Carbon Dioxide.
But the jetta puts out significantly less Carbon monoxide and nearly the same particulate. Also, this is based on a 34 mpg jetta, most real life Tdi's get closer to 45-50 while the prius can get less than the 50 it's rated at

Except for the engine, and some exhaust stuff in the modern clean diesel vehicles, everything else is the same as in any other vehicle. Most of the repairs are not diesel-specific, and can be done at most shops. Diesel engines also rarely break, since they are very durable.
