    Through the years The Contortionist went from Deathcore to full Cynic-Karnivool prog rock band, and if You check all their albums You can hear the evolution. It may sounded dated to you because of the Cynic influences. To me Language is one of the best prog metal álbums ever

    Drew, I appreciate your honest reaction to this album. I will just say this: this album is an acquired taste. It happened like that for me as well. At some point tho, everything clicked and I can’t listen to a single song on it without getting incredibly emotional.

    I feel like you'd really like their latest album Clairvoyant or their latest EP Our Bones. There's a lot more emphasis on vocal harmonies, clean vocals (no screaming or heavy breakdowns at all), and less technicality for the sake of technicality. A much more streamlined experience in my opinion, compared to a lot of their older stuff.

    • @descendng

    I'm glad you didn't force yourself to like this album, coming from someone who loves this album I understand why others don't but that's okay. Music gives people a wide scope of emotions and for some albums it just interacts with people differently. I'm just happy you gave it a listen!

  • @archerybandofficial

    As quite a few others have mentioned, this band with Michael Lessard on vocals is truly a grower. I only listened to one of their songs occasionally for like a year. Over time this album and clairvoyant have made me feel more emotion than anything else I'm listening to. My favourite band

    I was waiting to see if you'd react to them at some point! and even if you didn't fully vibe with this release, I feel like it could potentially be a bit of a grower. I know it was for me, because I felt pretty similar when I first heard it. Always up to you if you want to come back to it.
    I'd say their best work to date is their album Clairvoyant. Not an incredibly heavy one musically, but definitely emotionally, and it feels more cohesive. I'd love to see you check it out sometime!!
    Some other albums I have in mind to recommend to you are:
    Every Time I Die - Low Teens (or Radical, that album fucks too)

    Greyhaven - This Bright And Beautiful World

    I think Language is a fantastic album and was their best at the time of release. However, I will say that they reached a new peak with their 2017 follow-up Clairvoyant, which is a lot more focused on song-writing than "prog flair" (although it's still very much prog). It's also almost completely devoid of growls which shows a different side of the band. If you enjoyed the more chilled out vibe-y parts of Language, I think Clairvoyant will be more up your alley. One of my all time favs for sure.

Maybe it’s because of nostalgia but this is one of my favorite prog albums of all time, just doesn’t compare to most other stuff for me.

    Find it kind of weird how you compare this Steven Wilson yet you don't like this but like Steven Wilson, to be fair, I have for many bands where something about it doesn't fully click with me. I'm like that with Vildhjarta, after about a couple songs I'm done with it pretty much, it is too one dimensional for me. With this there are so many layers happening and subtle but satisfying grooves is a big component to why I like this so much, maybe pay more attention to the drums throughout? The album was a big grower for me, I didn't immediatly love it, picture yourself in this futuristic distopian world listen to this album, that's what I do lol, the album very much transports me to somewhere else.

    Was surprised that you didn't like this album. Maybe you was not in mood for it)
    Anyway I'd like to recommend you to checkout 2008 album Silhouettes of the band Textures. It is one of the earliest examples of modern djent. Their music has some old school prog elements, such as their work with synths and sometimes clean vocals style. It's got groove, heaviness, interesting melodies and transitions, but nothing too crazy, like something you would hear from BTBAM or Vildhjarta for example. So I can imagine that you wouldn't like it, but it is far more dynamic and fun to listen to than Contortionist one (IMO of course)

  • @thefloop2813
    @thefloop2813 Před 3 měsíci

    Interestingly enough Tesseract and The Contortionist are my two favorite prog bands. And the Tool song your thinking of is probably Jambi, not Invincible.
    There is a very deep seated universally applicable concept attempting to communicate itself through this album. Definitely recommend looking into Alan Watts, the man speaking at the end of The Parable, you may not have even listened to it. That's actually the focal point of the entire album lol. If you can figure out what it is that Alan Watts is telling you there, this album will make sense immediately.
    The jist of the message of this album...
    The same force that beats your heart is indeed the same force shining the sun. Your skin is a bridge not a forcefield, you are just as much a part of this universe as anything else. It's all one, and you are just playing the Drew Fortune RPG right now. This time Drew happened, but that time, The Floop happened, but from the perspective of the whole there is no this or that, just I, and I am. The Rastafari guys like to just say I and I, if you have ever heard that expression before.
    Jai Guru Deva Ohm, existence echoing
    Jai Guru Deva ohm, the sum of all things
    Grateful to the master, Existence echoing ( I am [Drew] )
    Grateful to the master, the sum of all things ( I, and I am )
    You are the perceiver, that perceived the parable, the never ending end. You are the the infinite, you are the finite. You are. You are...... (i am. I am......)
    You are something that the entire universe is doing, in the same way single wave is something the entire ocean is doing. What you do in the place you can here and now, is what the entire universe is doing. It's all you, even you're experience of the navigable image of it. That's all you too. Matter itself is just pure information and vibrating energy.
    You cannot be separated from the whole you are an integral part of it, you are I, and I am, both. Objective Reality is a seamless continuum that even the fabric of space-time and light itself must bend to, you are not separate from it. It's not all out there while you're in here. In here IS out there and out there IS in here, they are the same thing. It's just another dualistic, polar relationship in a possibly fractal universe. Something very conveniently described in the image of the yin-yang. The most important part of that image isn't the black or white side, it's the line in the middle and the dots.
    I cannot point blank tell you what it is there is to understand here, much like this album nor Alan Watts, it cannot be said directly in this reality. It can only be pontificated or understood.

    Comin' in late here, but I feel ya. This album was something really fresh when I first heard it, but I think it's really the first two and last two tracks that hold it together. • @42k78
    @42k78 Před rokem

    This was an interesting album to react to. I have to say I do love The Contortionist but I might prefer their older stuff. Intrinsic is their best. I love a couple tunes from this album too. I did think you were gonna love this but I almost like how you surprised me. It's cool that you don't just love everything no matter what. I did wish there were slightly less jazzy parts and more heaviness. Just a little. I respect the attempt at a more unique sound. I don't think anyone knows how to have them play with. They tour with other metal bands like After the Burial and Veil of Maya. People mosh to the other two bands I just mentioned and there's a ton of energy, for Contortionist, everyone is just kind of watching. I don't think the band minds but it does make you think that they should be playing with more alternative sounding stuff.

    I wouldn't have liked this album if I'd started with it. First I got in love with the band listening to the debut and only then I appreciated this one and Clairvoyant. These just aren't the albums to start with if you're more into metal. Just check out the very first seconds of Exoplanet and you'll make sure you should listen to it. It's got deathcore and melodic metalcore combination (I suppose). It hits tears out of my eyes man:) Intrinsic is more complicated and requires more listens.

    Definitely not an "immediate" album and definitely not dated imo. Not only are the compositions very nuanced, but a lot of the dynamics at play and the way certain songs build up are very different from what you'd expect from a Progressive band. To me, this album is brimming with intricacies and beautiful layers despite having an overall meditative tone but it did nothing for me on my first few listens. Hope you'll revisit it when you feel like it, few bands have group cohesion this good and even fewer can create something so controlled and so deliberate without ever coming across as contrived or inorganic.

    i love this album, u hated it, ive subscribed 😆 i think its a common thing with you and its just not gonna be ur jam for the same reason opeth isnt. prog metal fuses a soft side and a harsh side, a band like periphery for example blends a 90s greenday/blink 182 poppunk soft vibe with a nu metal slick heavy riffing sound then makes prog madness out of them. where opeth by contrast mixes a 70s led zeppelin soft side with a dark blackened death metal evil for the heavy, and likewise this album by contortionist has that 70s prog warmth on the soft side with a very earthy death metal heavy side.
    im 41, i love all that, my parents raised me on zeppelin, pink floyd, that 70s sound speaks to me. youre of a different generation, youre obviously not feeling an affinity for that vibe and thats totally fine. tesseract are one of my favourite bands, we have common ground there, and then by contrast sleep token to me on the light side sound too much like boy band cheese pop where you being younger probably have a totally different sonic vocab because youve listened to the last 20 years of music in a way i havent, so youre frame of reference is different and youre probably hearing lots of aspects of good music that im just unaware of.
    but i can see that consistent trend when things have a 70s vibe and maybe too much of a black/death vibe you dont resonate with them as much as things that maybe borrow more from the 80s book of slick clean futuristic sounds.
