I feel like Megan McTardle is the Bizarro John Dolan. They're both people who write stuff and fell bass ackwards into a kind of success after a lifetime of miserable failures, but John Dolan became the funny, knowledgeable, ornery War Nerd while McArdle is a loathsome court jester for oligarchs. John Dolan wrote a book about his wretched life that framed it as a comedy, while McArdle's book about her own wretched life tries to make it an inspiring success story even though she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and has never had to experience real consequences for her failures. It's fitting, in a way, that she is the arch-nemesis of John Dolan and Mark Ames.

It’s a total insane way to view a tragedy….unbelievable to think that avoiding basic safety measures that ends up in a tragedy EXACERBATED by NOT having those measures, can somehow be justified to why those measures where unnecessary to begin with! It’s totally irrational!
I think you are letting her off the hook a bit by saying it's irrational since that would avoid the conclusion that her views are fundementally monstrous. Her reasoning is totally internally consistent but it seems alien to us because we foolishly assume that she, like almost all humans, believes a human life is valuable inherently. To her another person's life only has value if their continued existence will likely benefit her and then how much value depends on how much benefit they bring.
