I used to think gym leaders spamming healing items on their pokemon was making them literally weaker and take more damage, leading to OHKOs or 2HKOs when the original attack wasn't hitting hard enough. But back then I also used to think your own gender influenced that of your starter and wild mons'... or that if you fled from a lv 7 Pidgey only to encounter another lv 7 Pidgey immediately after it was THAT same Pidgey, angry that you didn't fight or catch it- so there's that.

The Pidgey theory is wild but makes so much sense.

Even after learning better, I still thought your character’s gender affected your starter Pokemon’s gender

@@AlliSinned I was still convinced it did until a few months back bc most pokemon I got in a playthrough were female when I chose the girl, but then I realized that was just confirmation bias

@@GabbykatGaming I would honestly love it if that was the case. Imagine failing a shiny and then it immediately comes back bc it got upset. Maybe have it be a low chance for non-shiny and common pokemon, and a big chance for Shinies and rare Pokemon!

I found about it very early on, I want to say when I was a kid playing Pokemon Stadium 2 and fighting the AI there. Since you can see the exact HP of your opponent's Pokemon you can quickly tell that the same move doesn't do the same amount of damage against the same Pokemon.
I believe the game also tells you this if you go to Earl's academy, he would teach you more about other hidden mechanics of the game, stuff like how your attacks get an attack bonus if you use a move with the same type as your Pokemon or some moves have interesting properties. Like how Stomp doubles in power if the opponent uses minimize, how Thunder can hit targets in the middle of the move Fly or Earthquake can hit targets in the middle of the move Dig.
And damage range is pretty easy to understand now, it's math, it's your attack, their defense, the move's power, typing, level of the attacker, basically everything you said. It spits a number at the end of that calculation and then the games multiples that number from a random number between .85 to 1 and then uses that final number to see how much your attack will do. So if the math says this move should do 100 damage then it'll use that number and multiply it from a random number between .85 to 1. So in that case it'll do between 85 damage to 100 damage.

That's really cool. Thank you for sharing more of how things work!

When I was younger thanks to resuslts based analysis I believed that if you used the same move twice, the 2nd time it would do more damage... I think I was just really unlucky on all of my first moves...

I didn't know how stats worked till I was 10 furthermore I didn't know about ranges till I was 14 because I really got into competitive, and I still don't fully understand how it works.
