BOSS GT-1000 Dynamics: Clean, Light Overdrive to High Gain - Tender Surrender

  • The biggest test of any amp modelling system is whether it cleans up realistically using your guitar volume. To put this to the test on the new GT-1000, I created a high gain patch approximately in the style of Steve Vai's amazing song Tender Surrender, and ONLY used the guitar volume to get clean, slightly driven and high gain tones. Listen for yourself and tell me that the tones aren't full of of tasty feel!
    I used my Music Man Starry Night Silhouette into the GT-1000 using the new BOSS WL-20 wireless system.
    On the GT-1000, I used the X-HI GAIN amp with a DS-1 style distortion pushing the front end like Steve Vai runs his amps, with some delay and reverb.
    No post-EQ has been applied to the guitar.

    Thumbs up for "too hard". Made me smile. Although the loud drum hit at the start made me jump.

    I just ordered my boss wl20. Is this can be use on live stage? Or any delay problem with it?

    • @sixstringsamurai77
      @sixstringsamurai77  Před 5 lety

      It certainly can! Just make sure you pair it at the gig venue so it can find the optimum channel to operate on. The latency on the WL-20 is 2.3ms, which is the best in its class. Have fun with it!

    How do you find the GT-1000 compared to your Helix? Cheers for the vid!

      Thanks for your comment! Full disclosure - I now work for Roland/BOSS so make of that what you will. There are pros and cons to either one. GT-1000 is a lot lighter and more compact, seamless patch changing, world class effects engine and the amps are the best BOSS have ever done. High ease of use factor with the Bluetooth editor. However, instead of modelling real world amps, it focuses on unique original creations, which means you will need to use your ears a lot more (this is a positive for some but a negative for others). IR loading capabilities brings it in line with the current generation of modellers. There are some crazy signal chain routing capabilities too.
      Helix is of course is a great unit too! I also use the Fractal AX8 as well just to make things confusing haha. I think there is a place for all the flagship modellers these days, they all sound and feel pretty great so at the end of the day it will come down to your personal taste for the amp modelling sound and how the feature set of each one suits your needs.

      Thanks for replying! Does that mean (reading between the lines) that the GT amps are not quite up to the level of the Helix? I've owned a Helix and Native and think they are solid but they didn't personally wow me. The new GT-1000 X series amps I tested seemed refreshingly better than my GT-1 (and better than Helix without IRs) but I didn't care for the older stuff in it. 4CM usage and FX in the Boss look really good with the RV/DD/MD 500 algorithms.

      @sixstringsamurai77  Před 5 lety +1

      Haha no that's not what I was trying to say. The GT-1000 amps feel fantastic and sound great - as you can hear in the video they're so dynamic! Better than anything we've ever done imo. But because they are all new/original amps, it requires a little more work in getting to know the tones than on Helix etc where you can just select a specific "real" amp. But I think it's worth it, you can get some really great and unique tones out of the unit!
