CODES P0171 P1101 P0106 FIXED!
PVC VACUUM LEAK DIAGNOSIS AND FIX!
VALVE COVER GASKET REPLACEMENT!
hey guys! In this video we have a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze we just purchased for resale not long ago.. after hooking up my Zurich Z13 OBD II Scanner! (It’s actually been a great scanner for a while now! Reads almost everything on a car!) it had 3 major permanent codes which were:
P0171 - Fuel Trim System Lean
P0106 - Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Performance
P1101 - Intake Air Flow System Performance
All these codes are related to a vacuum leak. Which means there is air coming in past the MAP sensor. causing faulty reading causing too much air and not enough fuel which in turn will cause your cruze engine to idle rough and possibly stall..
The diagnosis process was us spraying some carb cleaner or water around the valve cover to see if there was any change in idle. But before we even got to perform that test we took the cover off and checked what most people call the PCV valve which is (Positive Crankcase Ventilation System) which was creating a suction where it should be timed and electronically controlled. Clearly that was our problem.
Also checked out our Scanner Live Data readings and the short term fuel trim was reading over 30% which is not good.
Well anyways to keep this description short, we went ahead and ordered a new valve cover for this engine since we can’t replace that part by itself.
Part came in a few days later and here’s how we did it!
Thanks for watching the video!

This was easy work even for someone like me that don’t know shit about cars. Thanks to guys like you on CZcams lol Gracias bro!
Also the purge solenoid is known for also causing p1101 and po171, keep an eye on the long term/short term fuel trim with engine on, if the purge is stuck open unplug the connector and see if the fuel trim goes negative, that is also another source of leaks
Just subbed up to your channel, just bought a 2015 a year or two ago, really nice little car. But when stopped or in park it sometimes does a slight almost jerk motion like it's skipping or bad gas/old fuel filter type problem. Im not a mechanic, but have no help, so gotta do this myself. Watched this video and I like what youre doing. So Im gonna be watching your videos to help me get some things done on this little car. Do you do Chrysler Town and Country? 2006 model? Ive got one of those as well. Again, not a mechanic, and what I did know, well, I grew up in the 70's and early 80's, so you can imagine what all I DON'T know! LOL Thanks for what you do.
Thank you! This pin pointed exactly where my problem was, getting my part ordered today! Woll be subscribing for sure. 🎉🎉🎉
dont forget to take care of the intake manifold which is like the main cause for this issue, and it breaks the pvc hose too
Just for reference. That big valve on the valve cover is not the pcv valve. The pcv valve is part of the intake manifold. That valve on the cover is actually the vacuum control valve which keeps the vacuum in the engine at 12 - 18 inches of water not mercury. But ya it should not be constantly sucking air. If you have this condition also make sure the pcv valve in the intake hasn’t been sucked out. To check you just have too remove the upper hose that goes from intake to turbo. Look down with flash lite. You should see a rubber nipple. If that nipple is gone then you need intake assembly as well.and the vacuum valve of course is complete with valve cover lol.
Will a bad cover make the engine overheat?
@@frankfranz4428 not really. Only if oil was pouring out lol
Would the MAP sensor cause the same kind of issue with that airflow issue? I have both p0105 and p0106 codes showing
@@frankfranz4428these 2.4 ecotecs love to chew up head gaskets, your overheating is probably a lack of coolant born from head gasket leak
@@oldfag_adventures it was the top thing on the engine that time. Been a while. Repalce water pump once and thermostat 2 times lol
Thanks a lot man it helped a lot pointed me in a right direction that pvc had huge vacuum leak it has set 5 codes o2 , lean code, MAP, Rav to high codeTurbo performance code I fixed that vacuum leak fixed all the problems fixed all codes
I have my moms 1st Gen 2016 cruze and I turn it on and it's shaking and can smell gas. I used my scanner and i got back p0106. So does the pc valve need to be replaced or the pc cover ?
You are supposed to check the non-return valve in the intake manifold and the check valve in the PCV breather hose as well. If that check valve in the manifold is gone, you're going to be doing this job all over again in about 2 years or so. The instructions that come with the Dorman valve cover tell you that.
You should have put RTV sealer in the seams where the head and the timing cover meet. Without that sealer, this valve cover will definitely leak oil.
Also the gaskets that come with some of these replacement valve covers are junk. Save yourself another headache and put a new Felpro or other quality gasket on it.
Also it's a good idea to check the bolts that hold down the timing chain guide. They work themselves loose. Use loctite and re-tighten if they are loose.
If that check valve in the intake manifold is still there, just really gummed up, would you advise replacing the whole dang intake manifold?
How come approx. 2 years to redo the valve cover? Just based on experience or something else?
@@melissagunderson5575 I might try spraying a solvent that won't hurt the plastic.

Will this issue make it turning the engine on have lag also?
i have a 2012 with a check engine light on and loses power in gears 4 and 5 any ideas
Thanks man I got the same issues
Y que paso con los empaques??? O esa parte no lleva empaques????
Great video thanks 😊 👍🏽
What is torgue on valve cover bolts.
I'm hoping that what's my problem with my 2018 Chevy Trax, same damm codes!
Nice work. Thanks
Is this the same for a 2016 chevy cruze because the engine light has been on for like 3 weeks and the chevy dealership has just been stealing my money
Good info, thanks!
thank you same problem with my car
Thanks a lot
It's so helpful for me !
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching!
I just received a letter from General Motors pertaining to this
I didn’t clean mine just around the edges do you suggest I take it back off and clean it more?
Lol
Replacing the valve cover will only temporarily fix this issue. That check valve on top of the valve cover blows because you're likely missing a small nipple valve located in the manifold. Fix both of these issues at once unless you enjoy buying $60 valve covers every so often.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. YOU MUST ALSO FIX THE CAUSE OF THIS FAILURE OR IT WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. Parts Geek has a kit with the valve cover, intake manifold and troublesome corrugated hose that goes from the top of the intake to the turbo. all for under $250
Kris do you know the specific name for this part
I bought a 13 used. Bucks around 55-60. Had seemed improved after balancing front tires but now i fear is misfire. Would misfire not automatically engage check engine?
@@jasonbrion1048 it should. Go for a short drive and when you pull over and get out, feel both front brakes to see if one is significantly hotter than the other. If so a sticking brake calipar piston may be the culprit.
How bout you make a video about it or link one
How does it become uncovered in the first place
My car has a rough idle so I checked to see if that valve was sucking air and it was a little… is this valve suppose to be sucking air at all or what?
Nice. Thank you!
Hey thanks for watching! Glad we could help!
You are life saver
Hi I am having the same trouble with my 2011 cruise and it shack's bad and acting like it wants to shut down at every stop light, I will try to replace the valve cover like in ur video and let you know if that fixed the problem.
I am having the same exact problem with my 2014 Chevy. Was your problem fixed after replacing the valve cover?
Just had this problem with my 2014 Cruze was the pcv valve but it’s crazy how you gotta change the whole valve cover. The valve caused my car to pop those codes as well. Actually it caused my car to pop up 10+
Codes
Hey there. We hope you were able to fix the problem. It's a very simple procedure.. I am confident you could do it.. but if you have any doubts.. I would suggest letting a professional handle it... let us know if you were able to figure it out please.
They sell rebuild kits for the PCV VALVE. It's $10
Do u have a part number?
Awesomeness thanks
This fixed it for me - 2013 Chevy Cruze. Thanks for uploading this video!
Did u have those same 3 codes ? Please reply. I'm having the same issues.
Thanks
Yes. These 3 plus a couple others.
Till this day does it still work?
@@d.alderson9687 Yes, replacing the PCV valve cover resolved the vacuum leak and still no issues today. Good luck!
@@HeftySkateboarding could that bad pcv leak u change cause trouble starting your car up
I'm getting ready to replace this for the third time on this car.
Yeah the cruze and Sonics tend to have this as a common issue… I’ve seen others bypass it somehow… not sure.. but hey as long as it fixes the problem right? Haha
Did you/should I use RTV on certain spots of the gasket?
Yes you certainly should. We should’ve added it
@@HidalgoMotorsCo can you elaborate on where it belongs? Doing this change on my car tomorrow
Where the timing chain cover meets the block you see where its at when you take it off there be some where the factory install it .
Replaced the engine/valve cover, ignition coil, and spark plugs.....still rough idling. Any other suggestions?
Yes please stop throwing money at it and take it to get it diagnosed professionally. Its the best advice I can give you.
The intake manifold has a small check valve of sorts built into it. This had failed. You don't have to replace the manifold but you must seal the hole off where that nipple valve used to reside then re-route your pcv. Search Cruze fix kit. I didn't but a kit but I watched the video enough I was able to put one together using parts I had and 15 bucks.
Mine has all of those codes showing as well as PO15b and engine light on. Any Suggestions? The valve cover was just replaced roughly a year ago 😒
Sorry for Late response. I suggest getting your vehicle diagnosed by the chevy dealership to get a better idea of where to go from there.
General Motors has something out about this
Im on my 4th valve cover. Gonna get it fixed then trade the POS for a toyota
aren't you supposed to add a small amount of silicon on a couple parts there?
Yes gasket maker
No RTV at the timing cover joint???
thanks its' help a lot I save a lot money
I need help :( my 2011 Cruze is a money guzzler and I’ve done so much to it and it’s still misfiring at idol SO bad. To the point where I don’t even pick girls up anymore because of how embarrassingly bad my car shakes. I’ve done everything I can think of, sparks, coil, valve cover
You ever find the problem sounds like exactly what mines doing
@@jarodcox1377 No, it could be the wrong brand of O2 Censors, Im not sure, sell that car as quick as you can, or take it to a Chevrolet Dealership and ask them to fix it.
Bad fuel injectors man!
hey man i appreciate you making this video i was wondering how long did that fix last? because i heard you need to change the intake too or else the problem will come back?
I’m confused 🫤 was it blowing out air or sucking in air. Which one is it not supposed to do
Sucking, it is not supposed to suck.
Does anyone have the part number?
You should never ever pry on the head. You also forgot to put a bead of silicon on the two sides of the cams. This will cause a vacuum leak.
RANDYYYYY!!! yes bro I know and I agree 100%. Just never thought the video would go off. Now can’t turn back. We rely on experts like you to let us know what’s up!
@@HidalgoMotorsCo lol 😂 bro I am noooo expert just had to do it enough times but this was a great video
Well brother. Perception is reality right? I enjoy your videos! Big fan bro! Appreciate the comment! Wish you the best! And will definitely stay tuned!!
You didn’t mention or seal the grooves on the mating surface.
I just changed the valve cover and clear the codes. but engine check light keep coming back and there is still vaccum leak. I changed the crankshaft seal as well. any ideas guys?
You have to replace the intake manifold and the valve cover or it won't be fixed. If you drive car with bad pcv it will also wreck the seal on the oil pan.
Lol sounds like you have a fucking vacuum leak that you need to find. Hahaha
Does that part require a gasket?
The part comes with the gasket.
I have this 2014 cruz. Got the exact same 3 codes. Do I just need to replace this PVC valve? Or anything eles ? Please let me know. Thanks
Now is the best time to sell your car and get the most money out of it, sell your Chevy Cruze as quick as possible and get a Toyota. Please. I lost 5,000$ on my Chevy Cruze because I waited too long to sell it and more things went bad.

just tighten it in a star pattern and you should be fine, if you're already this far you should be able to find the rest of the information yourself

This didn’t work can you maybe help my car has a bad idol
Ok so far same symptoms the valve is hissing!
It gonna fail because the problem is in the intake manifold where the pcv valve is not the valve cover thats is a diafragm not a pcv
You installed the oil cap upside down 😅
Chevy just notified me of a recall for this problem. Only for cars with less than 120,000MI. 40,000MI too late for my car.
Is the recall just for the 2014? Bc I have a 2012 lt and has this problem
Can this cause the service traction control light to turn on?
I got a service traction control about 6 months ago.. it was raining so I’m not sure if that was a factor but I haven’t had any problems since.
When mine threw that message, I ended up having a misfire on a cylinder. It was expensive to fix
At 45/90 degrees FM recommends to add RTV gasket gasket sealer as of most car manufacturers so no engine oil leaks/speaps. Any automotive tech knows across the board of that simple repair. An you did not
My car loses power as it goes up hill, I did change the Pcv cover like 2 years ago, there's no leak from the Pcv cover this time but could still be the Pcv cover? Anybody help me
No. Take it to a real mechanic.
Don't buy a Chevy Cruze they suck .
Very bad
I assume this guy doesn't know much about how this car works. Or at least what causes the problems he thinks he fixed.
