Using the UV-5x3 ctcss and dcs scanning both work as expected. I think the step you needed to take was first, just set an arbitrary DCS code and apply it (this enables the DCS in the radio) then you can go back into the menu and hit your scan button, it will then scan as you expect and showed in your video. Sorry it took me so long to find your video and reply, I just got into the hobby and found this video super helpful! Thanks for sharing! WRFI720 - 73

oh my God you're a freakin' LEGEND! I had almost given up when I saw your comment and then I tried setting a tone for R-CTCSS and NOW it works, now it scans all the CTCSS tones and stops on the tone being generated! im SO happy!
Confirmed working on the Quansheng UV-R50 v.1. I did switch to frequency mode and set an initial tone in the menu before testing the scan. Have not tested v.2 yet. Thanks for the video.
Baofeng BF-F8HP software version F8HP-1. Works just like you said. Have to initially save a CTCSS code. Then it will scan every time. Great Tip. Thank You from Deep South Texas!

Scanning class tones works here. Some radios versions now require me to turn on class receive where older versions don't also I have to hit scan twice but it worked
Baofeng BF-6H same as TIDRadio TD-H6, has menu options 29 (cts) and 30 (dcs) for this function when in VFO mode. Not sure of the firmware version but it is a feature of the radio.
UV-9R Plus, firmware NT5101 works. Yes I didn't think it worked until I set the CTCS to a frequency instead of OFF. If it is set to off it won't scan. So set it to a random frequency and press menu to confirm, and then press menu again like to set it again, only this time push the scan button. Then the CT will blink and you can PTT on the other radio and it will scan.
Also just to add like others have said, yes you must be in frequency mode not channel mode, and also the dual frequency monitoring setting should be off.
BTECH (Baofeng) GMRS-V1. Instruction manual indicates the feature is present but have not had a chance to test it. As some other folks have pointed out, the instructions DO state that you need to first actually set a code/tone, in order for code/tone scanning to work. So while that is a little counter-intuitive, it does need to be done which is why I suspect a lot of commenters here say it doesn't work.
Well, I've never tested the scan feature for PL/CTCSS tones. I'll have to try that. I do know that monitoring the input frequency of a repeater is the wrong thing to do. If someone is hitting a repeater, they are already using a PL tone. You can simply listen to the repeater and change between receive PL tones to find which one they are using. So, even if your radio doesn't have a CTCSS scan feature, you can still manually go one PL tone at a time until you can hear a repeater, so long as there is traffic. I've used this to listen to and join random HAM nets before.
This is in reference to the comment by Sebastian Gru's comment, with the additional surprise that 220 works on radios that are supposed to be dual band only. UV-9S HN5RV01 tone scan works in VFO only (This is a radio marketed as Tri-Band) BF-F8HP N5R340B tone scan works VFO & MEM Dual Band - 220 does not work at all. UV-5REX HN5RV01 tone scan works VFO only - I noticed the firmware version is the same as the 9S which is a tri band radio, UV-5REX is marketed as a dual band. I loaded the UV-5REX with the programming from the UV-S9, and 220 worked perfectly, both TX and RX. Same output power. Not sure if there are spurs or harmonics. Will investigate further. UV-5R HN5RV01 No Tone scanning at all, even though the firmware number matches UV-9S and UV-5EX. Also noted that this radio would work on 220, with reduced output power, probably not a good idea to do it.
You have to do it in frequency mode. I don't know if anyone has already said this as I haven't read the comments, so if someone already has then I'm just confirming it works.
FIX! When you hit “scan”, it won’t work if the ctcs is “off”. You have to set it to 67.0 or something random, hit “menu” so it saves it, THEN go back into the ctcs menu and hit scan.

Baofeng UV-5x3 FW: ? 5.2 Tone Scanning - Radio must be in VFO mode, not MR (channel) mode. To determine the Tone of an incoming signal, perform the following: MENU 1 0 (DCS) or 1 1 (CTCSS) MENU SCAN A tiny CT should start flashing on the left side of LCD. - You can start the scan function prior a signal being received. - When a signal is detected, the scan will start automatically. - When it finds the tone, it will beep and stop. Note: The radio requires that Menu 10 (DCS) or Menu 11 (CTCSS) be set to something other than OFF to perform the scan.
The real question is, how do I find the nearby frequencies being used. Not so much the hertz. But like I have a tone decoder. And it'll tell me the frequency the walkie talkies are using and the hertz.
I live in Canada. I am not aware if it is illegal for the Baofeng to talk to a FRS/GMRS frequencies. However, I am aware that amateur radio operators have told me that the Baofeng transceiver must be on low to stay within legal power ranges. I programme these radios a lot for many people. Almost all of them ask for the FRS/GMRS frequencies to be programmed into the radios. I do not have my own, yet. I am just really good at programming things with the most butchered of instructions and I am often paid to programme equipment from all manner of services. I know. I have no life.

New model Baofeng BF-H6 8watt here. Confirming scan function is operational and has a dedicated button for such purpose. Firmware AIP.H6.01.023
I have a tidradio gm 5R I'm currently having some difficulty logging into a repeater almost got it figured out maybe you can help me
Does not work on the Ailunce HD1, it uses the scan button to change between CTCSS, DCS, and RDCS is the slelctor screen(when in analogue mode). I've contacted Ailunce with hopes they will shed light, or add it to the firmware.
ver bfb251 model uv-56 this works.

Some of my Baofengs with different firmware when sellecting the DCS code after hitting confirm the radio does not store it and the display reads DCS OFF...
Works on UV 9r firmware nt 5101
Also on the UV9Rplus, same FW version (NT5101)

How do you find the sending code to a radio that doesnt receive from Baofeng from another radio but the ones that are programmed..??
Philippines!
How come you are not saying your GMRS call sign when you key up the Mid radio?
Just been able to figure out half this radio can do
Baofeng UV-5x3
FW: ?
5.2 Tone Scanning
- Radio must be in VFO mode, not MR (channel) mode.
To determine the Tone of an incoming signal, perform the following:
MENU
1 0 (DCS) or 1 1 (CTCSS)
MENU
SCAN
A tiny CT should start flashing on the left side of LCD.
My BF-R3 and older UV-5RA can both scan CTCSS tones.
UV-85 Works! BFB 298
Using a baofeng uv 13 pro v2 and it has this functionality
The real question is, how do I find the nearby frequencies being used. Not so much the hertz. But like I have a tone decoder. And it'll tell me the frequency the walkie talkies are using and the hertz.
You'll need a totally different piece of equipment for that. Like an SDR or a scanner with the "close call" function.
how do i use the bcs codes for receiving on my Baofeng uv-82hp IM USING IT ONLY AS A SCANNER
USING CHIRP
Help I cant get out . I have hp8 and a midland 115
When I do this on the UV9G it’s gets stuck and blinks says Chanel Channel …..
UV5R-5RTP working
Mine will receive DCS radio frequencies as my area has DCS traffic.
Can it scan for the DCS tone squelch though?
Worked with a btech uv25x2. Don't know firmware
what key is the Scan key? what?
BFB297 works for me,
Mine shows thru CHIRP firmware message 1 BFS313 and message 2 shows BFS297. That is found under the other settings in CHIRP
This is what the firmware is? Thats odd.
Uv-5r5??
I have a brand new baofeng uv-5r fresh from China. Firmware BFB298. I tried it on 166.580 and it wouldn't scan. I also tried it on 462.550. Scan key didn't work.

Not scanning on my uv5r
I have a BF-F8HP (running F8HP-1). The way I get it to scan is (menu), (1step), (1step), (menu), (up) or (down), (menu), (menu), (*scan)
But does is tell you what the CTCS tone is?
@@509rifas i have this model and can confirm it DOES.
@@CerealKiller187 you are able to identify CTCSS tones through scan on a F8HP-1 firmware?
@@CerealKiller187 disregard, just saw your other post. Thanks.
@@509rifas thank you for posting this video. All these little hidden features are a lovely surprise. I had no idea until your video that the radio was even capable of this scan feature.
Btw, in your neck of the woods. Greater Thurston county area near Capitol Peak.
My UV-5RTP with fm of BFP3-23 does not do this.
No siempre tienen el mismo número de "recepción" algunas veses le ponen diferentes número de tonos.
