I just picked up the GT5R. Got familiar with the menu by looking up and storing all the civil and law frequencies in my County. Used your suggested menu settings for scanning. Over those few days I scored my GMRS license. $35. Just followed this video exactly and succeeded tx/rx from the nearest open repeater to me. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
(As well as T-CTS, there was a R-CTS and set that the same assuming T_up/R_dwn)
    Thanks again...

I used your instructions and was easily able to get on a repeater that uses both TX and RX tones. I don't think I could have figured this out without your help. I'm new to radio and GMRS. You've been my guide and guru. Thank you for your expertise and experience.

After watching a couple of other programming videos, your process is what worked for my radio. I figured it out after milling around with the HT and finally getting it programmed. Needless to say, I wished I'd found your video first before busting my brain, but I am glad that the method could be found here on YT. Thanks for a great video how-to!

Being essentially brand-new to using any type of programmable radio I came to this video because I wanted to be able to use my UV-5R at work where they have a fleet of non UV-5R radios.
Those radios work on a frequency such as 453.250 but I found by watching other notarubicon videos and commenting my question that the reason I can't transmit to those radios is because they use a CTCSS tone which to some degree shields those radios from hearing my UV-5R.
This video does show you how to set that CTCSS tone, sort-of, but being new I misunderstood the fact that CTCSS tones are preset tones that you can locate in the UV-5R instruction manual. Another way to express this is you don't type in a tone but rather choose a tone as one of the last steps in this video. This video is mostly about connecting to a repeater which I don't need and is only briefly about the CTCSS tone.
On the chart in the UV-5R instruction manual it shows a table of 50 possible tones you can choose. I already knew I needed it to be 118.8 because I had used a frequency counter to determine what that tone was that comes from the work radios. I was confused by the video because I was expecting to type in 118.8 somewhere. In this video he chooses 67hz which I did not understand came from that preset list of 50 tones.
For me, I needed to understand that tones were preset and I needed to continue to arrow up or down until I saw 118.8 as an option.
    Works perfectly now.

I did some research before I found this video... and there were approx 482 steps with many comments about which steps were wrong and which were out of order.. and frankly.. I was scared to even try. Then I watched this video and I can safely say... "First Try".

I just went back and watched this video again. I was having trouble setting the offset tone because I thought I needed to select a menu item before entering the freq. I trusted your instructions and it WORKED.
This was bothering me so much. I knew it had to be something simple. I just couldn’t wrap my head around the idea of just entering to offset tone without selecting a menu item first.
Thanks, Randy! I’m saving this video for future reference.

A sincere thank you for a 100% awesome video. Many folk have tried to help me with this and we enter the offset and shift and save the channel but when switch to channel mode it doesn’t work. But when we did it following this (basically saving the two different frequencies to the same channel is DID work. You the man! Ps- still love your old videos. Not a fan of new ones. I understand why you prob shifted tones because of all the knuckleheads out there. But these early videos are VERY VERY informative and to the point. Great stuff

@NotaRubicon Productions if you add the channel offset in the menu options, do you have to save the channel frequency in the channel memory? For example, 462.575 is the output. If we just go in and set the offset at +5Mhz and save it to the channel memory, do we still have to save the 467.575 as well to the same channel?
