  • Recently Sony announced that PlayStation 5 console sales have hit 59.2 million, just slightly under PS4 on a launch aligned basis. Adding to that, we know PS5 is generating more money and is a more profitable platform vs. PS4, which we know is one of the best selling consoles of all time. And yet, there's been a lot of consternation surrounding PS5's game exclusivity. Namely that is just doesn't have that many. They're either timed exclusives, cross-gen, or they get a PC release. So what gives? Well today we'll do some digging and throw out an opinion piece. Here's why the console is doing so well. And also, here's a picture of a cat. *gestures forward, but this is a CZcams description so there's actually nothing

    • @caphowdy666
      @caphowdy666 Před měsícem +26

      The problem with some of these companies is it is one mistake that kills them. Sega for instance. During the height of their success they were always in a battle with Nintendo. Then when they released the Saturn it was released at almost the same time as the first PlayStation. Many like myself were considering buying the Saturn out of loyalty to Sega and Sony was an unknown as far as consoles go, but Sony nailed it with games. The Saturn was actually the better console of the two, but games on a system is always going to be the biggest selling point. And then the Dreamcast came out a year before the PS2 but most people were just waiting for the PS2. One big mistake from the Saturn ruined them.
      And I dont think we even need to discuss why the Xbox has nose dived in the last two generations. All that crap they released about the Xbone that they had to back track on pretty much killed their momentum. Even the PS3 overtook the 360 in sales despite lagging behind for so long.
      It just proves that bragging about being the most powerful means nothing if you don't have the library to utilise that.
      And Gamepass has hurt the console even more. Great value for customers, but not so much for the console and developers.

      @CarTastic-fv6eo That's not entirely true.
      The ps5s ssd isn't 'magical' or anything, but it was modified within the console architecture to be taken advantage of by devs.
      The pc version of RA has to use an emulated version of this and it still doesn't perform as well with the instantaneous loading of assets as it does on console.

You have the exclusive players playing God of War, Spiderman etc or the casual players playing the yearly release game like COD or FIFA, live service players, third party jrpgs player (persona, final fantasy), PSVR players, subscription players. I’m sure for most them, it acts more like a PS4 PRO +.
    With how many cross gen games there are, as well as games that just get performance upgrades on current gen, the 5 just makes gaming a much better experience. Fast loading speed being a huge factor.
    However, obviously current gen still has the issue of there being very few games that truly utilize current hardware. Even most of Sony’s first party games on PS5 were made for 4 then just improved on 5 (GOW Ragnarok, LOU2, which are some of the most visually stunning games). This is why this gen doesn’t feel like it’s own gen right now, but just a plus on top of last gen.

If Sony were to release the games on both platforms day and date I wouldn't buy them for my PS5 at all, so they would be wise not to do that. They've also lost a purchase of a PS5 Pro from me because they are releasing on PC now. I treat my PC as the "Pro" and get to use it as such, right now. Now, if they could get the PC ports locked down to a single year release window that would be ideal, two years is a pain.

The _real_ purpose is magnetizing buyers to an ecosystem, then marketing that expanded ecosystem to 3rd party pubs, then getting a 30% kickback from 3rd party pubs per copy of their games sold within the ecosystem. I feel like people sometimes sleep on how important backwards compatibility is for a wide range of users, ESPECIALLY users who like to spend a lot in the ecosystem. I already had a huge PS4 library so it honestly would've been a much harder sell for me to upgrade to a PS5 right away without backwards compatibility because that would mean that I'd have to spend a ton of money on a new console that I don't have room for because I still need my PS4 hooked up to play all of my games. This is the reason why I personally waited over a year before I picked up a PS4 because I also had a good collection of PS3 games and until there was a significant amount of games to justify getting me to bench my previous console I saw no point in buying one. Of course, with PS5 this wasn't a concern at all as they basically said that all of my previous games would not only work BUT run better and load faster while also getting to play new games so I immediately picked one up and toss my PS4 Pro in the closet.
    Really, the biggest exception to this was the Nintendo Switch which didn't have backwards compatibility with the Wii U OR the 3DS but what it did have going for it was a must-play day 1 game in BOTW and the coolest gimmick to date which allowed you to play the same games you could previously only play at home on the go. However, they'll be the same boat as Sony going into next generation for me in that if they have back-compat then it's a day 1 purchase if I can find and afford one because I have a HUGE library of Switch games and I'll just swap out the systems. However, if it's NOT backwards compatible then...well actually Nintendo has found itself in a very opportune situation because it'll be 8 years between systems with no mid-gen spec bump so their next system is going to feel DRASTICALLY IMPROVED as compared to the current Switch. This compounds with the fact that I have mostly caught up on the Switch games that I want to play BECAUSE the system has been out for so long so as long as they come to the table with some banger exclusive games then I will likely jump in. Of course, if their new system IS backwards compatible then I will likely have even more reason to pick it up immediately even if the launch lineup isn't bonkers because I'll know that both past and future games are covered.

    I think it's pretty clear Sony views PC as a secondary market and treats it as such.
    Their primary market is PS5. They release their games on that first, because Sony gets to keep 100% of the revenue and those games drive console sales. It's not just about selling the game, it's also about growing their own ecosystem so the can sell other games, including 3rd party games.
    After sales of the game tapers off on PS5, then they release it on PC. They have to give Valve (or Epic) a cut of revenue, so it wouldn't be in Sony's best interest to release there at the same time as PS5. And that strategy is paying off. PC gamers don't seem to hold any grudges for the wait and Sony often tops Steam sales charts when they launch a game on it.
    It's like the old model of film distribution. Release to theaters first where you make the most money. Then wait a while before going to home video.

    Both the PS5 and PC have their pros and cons. For me, I prefer the console because of hardware stability as well as using physical media, which is not the case when playing PC games. As far as hardware is concerned, one with a lower end PC will have a hard time playing some of the latest graphic intensive games, but modding games on PC however are the chefs kiss! This is where PC gaming leaves console gaming in the dust by a mile and it's not even close. The one thing that I hate about buying and playing games digitally is that it can be removed at anytime as well as changed for what ever reasons the game publisher and/or game studio may have, and it's been proven by SE with FF7 Remake, that no matter how long ago a game has been out whether it's console or PC, that changes within a game can still happen through updates.
