When a Soviet wife lost her husband in combat, she donated all her money to the state to buy a T-34 tank. Her only proviso? That she be the tank's driver and it be named 'Fighting Girlfriend'. This is the true story of the woman tank driver who became a Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944.

As a russian, I would say something like "sister in arms" is much closer to original meaning of "Боевая подруга", then "fighting girlfriend" (especially since term girlfriend is also used to describe a girl you date)... Not to be prude or dull - just if it would be intresting to anyone. For multilinguistic russian "fighting girlfriend" is sort of scratching the eye, like something is wrong with that phrase, and it somewhat off point. That just FYI, thanks for your content!

As a native Russian speaker, my two cents:
The original name Боевая подруга doesn't only mean Fighting Girlfriend, but also a female combatant you're friends with.

@Mitch Paul - That's called "Revenge" and it wasn't just asked for; it was demanded, in ugly spectacular fashion. Germans still worry about the intentions of the Russians today. There's good reasons for modern Europeans to worry about Trump, the feckless grifter, making deals with Russia and disturbing the military alliances that were necessary after WW2. It's plain to see that some of Trump's foolishness worries America's European allies, who remember whole countries being taken over by the USSR after WW2 because of indecision(or malicious politics) in the other European countries.
Oh, well; there's a presidential election this year, and maybe intelligent, interested voters can send Trump back to TV - the "Vast Wasteland" Marshall McLuhan spoke of(where Trump came from). Fortune passes everywhere.
