When a Soviet wife lost her husband in combat, she donated all her money to the state to buy a T-34 tank. Her only proviso? That she be the tank's driver and it be named 'Fighting Girlfriend'. This is the true story of the woman tank driver who became a Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944.

Gentlemen, we should all be so lucky to find such a wife.
Absolutely.
I am a woman like that. We do exist.
Random Coyote : Amen
my wife is dangerous enough without armament...
@@laurakuhn8743 So there's hope ..
In Mother Russia......Kill Husband...Widow comes for you in Tank.
lastone 🤮
In Mother Russia, we stop communism
just a lost potato
That makes no sense because the Communist Party in Russia is still the second most popular party and has been growing in power because of the close relations with Communist China
Tusk : Bernie Sanders supporter?
Well, she either does that or gets shot in the back of the head by a commissar. The tank thing sounds like more fun to me.
That's passion. I doubt any of my ex's would take up arms let alone a tank for me.
As a russian, I would say something like "sister in arms" is much closer to original meaning of "Боевая подруга", then "fighting girlfriend" (especially since term girlfriend is also used to describe a girl you date)... Not to be prude or dull - just if it would be intresting to anyone. For multilinguistic russian "fighting girlfriend" is sort of scratching the eye, like something is wrong with that phrase, and it somewhat off point. That just FYI, thanks for your content!
As a native Russian speaker, my two cents:
The original name Боевая подруга doesn't only mean Fighting Girlfriend, but also a female combatant you're friends with.
@@1987jkilla get out of here u idiot.
@@1987jkilla no
A very courageous woman, I hope she met her fella again in their afterlife.
She was an atheist probably. 99% that her husband was (army officer in 1920-30-40s). Russia is still a weird mix of beliefs - pagan, early Christian and atheism all into one.
She’s not the type of woman to get into an argument with.
Brave, badass woman. She got her revenge. Respect.
To bad you have to use western slang and derogatory words to describe a brave and courageous woman shows your insulting nature.
@@ohwell2790,
I can assure you the term, 'badass' is not derogatory in the least, and it is applicable in a positive way to anything, either sentient or not.
@@ohwell2790 If you knew Western slang, you'd know that "badass" is not an insult. Go feed your cats.
@@ohwell2790 Western, capitalist slang makes my Soviet Socialist panties bunch uncomfortably. Fuck off, ya commie snowflake.
@@ohwell2790 Western slang is sort of a given when speaking western languages, if you find it offensive that's your problem.
Germans: Girls can't drive tanks !
Staline: Hold my "girlfriend"
Germans: damn were getting beat
*hold my panzerwaffe*

nyet
I'd have to add, that although "fighting girlfriend" is a sort of literal translation of the Russian idiom "боевая подруга" the real meaning of the idiom is more like "sister in arms".
Good story with a sadly predictable ending, may she rest in peace.
I certainly hope so.
When you shoot a tank commander and a year later you see his wife charging you with a T-34
I saw a picture of husband and wife team in ISU-152. Maybe Mark could find about that? Wife was the commander and hubby driver. One can only imagine the conversations.
In 200 metres turn left ... TURN LEFT!
They must have been a good team, that would be a cool movie
Germany: kills her husband
Maria: so you have chosen death
Surprised there wasn’t a movie about her. These “badass” women movies are pathetic and unbelievable let alone realistic. This is a true badass that I’d love to watch in theaters
What could be more fearsome than an angry widow, fearless and indifferent to her own safety, loyal to her homeland, and hell bent for revenge? Great story Mark, thank you.
Respect to her!
In Spades.
urraaaaa!!
As has been said throughout history:
Hell knows no fury like a woman scorned.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male (confer Rudyard Kipling)
That's true
Especially when she has PMS and is very dangerous to whoever upsets her!!
King Solomon was the wisest man of his generation. Sometimes right in the middle of his writings he'll say stuff like "it is better to live in a small attic than in a large house with an angry woman." 😂
🙌💯
The jerries sure kicked a hornets nest when they invaded the old USSR.
It is NEVER a good idea to invade Russia.
Like seriously who the hell thinks invading Russia would be a great idea. They didn't expect the invasion would take long. The Germans weren't prepared for it to last until winter. The Germans were not equipped for winter battle. They didn't have the proper things to keep them warm, I read this in a book. Plus, the terrain is difficult. They also have many bears, wolves & many other dangerous animals that roam their forests. No thanks, no thanks
It was either that or wait for them to attack and fight a defensive war the whole time.
@@svennoren9047 Well, the Bolsheviks took over easily enough.
The 1945 "Fighting Girlfriend" seems to be a IS-2 (or JS-2, nitpickers)
Jawohl
It is IS-2 indeed.
was about to say the same
He erroneously used a photo of an unrelated tank it seems. The tank in question with БОЕВАЯ ПОДРУГА written on it on other photos is a T-34/76.
Additionally the word подруга would be better translated as a female friend rather than a literal girlfriend, though both translations are valid.
Yep, that is an IS-2
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And the Germans found that out many times over, suffering the wrath of more than a few Soviet women.
@Mitch Paul So, many Russian women felt the fury of German men.
@Mitch Paul - That's called "Revenge" and it wasn't just asked for; it was demanded, in ugly spectacular fashion. Germans still worry about the intentions of the Russians today. There's good reasons for modern Europeans to worry about Trump, the feckless grifter, making deals with Russia and disturbing the military alliances that were necessary after WW2. It's plain to see that some of Trump's foolishness worries America's European allies, who remember whole countries being taken over by the USSR after WW2 because of indecision(or malicious politics) in the other European countries.
Oh, well; there's a presidential election this year, and maybe intelligent, interested voters can send Trump back to TV - the "Vast Wasteland" Marshall McLuhan spoke of(where Trump came from). Fortune passes everywhere.
@Mitch Paul ok professor
@@DavidSmith-ss1cg what a stupid rant. Trump 2020 it is.
@Mitch Paul sadly
These Russians are crazy brave at a different level.
Ever heard the stories of the soviet fighter pilots scoring kills by RAMMING enemy fighters?
She’s not the only hero, to give everything they had to make weapons for the front in the USSR. There were many others like her who seeked revenge for their fallen children or husbands or wife’s.
There is also a story of a bread maker in Stalingrad or Leningrad, who kept making bread for the soldiers until his death of starvation. He was awarded the hero of the Soviet Union
Those who barred the name "fighting girlfriend" her spirit was watch
She may physically have died but the fact they didn't want to leave her there and kept her in spirit to follow more or less put them in piece
Keeping that vengeful spirit alive. 💪
Rather then rewrite history to find “strong women” to shove down our throats.s Hollywood should make a movie about this lady. I love this women!!!
I really miss classic movies with a great female lead like aliens with Sigourney Weaver. Or the older terminator movies and also the resident evil movies.
Excellent story telling...brought a tear to my eye...the power of love in wartime.
me too, this woman was braver and more devoted then i think i could ever be may she rest in peace.
If your partner is willing to do that than it’s true love
'Serfs (slave) before the revolution' that's worth remembering .
It's spelt serf .
Their "liberation" under Alexander II was too conditional.
Serf, not surf.
"Serfs"
Bill Todd
Different master after the revolution.
What an amazing story. Particuarly struck by how socialism in particular educated the lower classes and helped make people of steel like Mariya, who can became nationmal heroes and an inspiration for all.
This is a pretty cool story.
😢 The power of Love.
Instead of "fighting girlfriend" shouldn't the tank have been named "revengeful wife"?
I should point out that подруга is usually used as a term for a female friend rather than a romantic partner.
Why make that comment now? Instead you should be in awe of such a brave woman to fight against the Nazi's who killed so many millions of Russians including her husband.
suggestion, give this idea to the woman, oh... yeah.. SHE IS FUCKING DEAD
No, this is the right translation
He girlfriend zoned
> Soviet Union 1940s
> "Saving up money to buy a tank from the state"
?????
0:21 notice the realism : see through solid rock, know the damage to your tank while still seated inside, check out the powerful radar on the lower right, it even identifies friend from foe, and the view from the gunners sight is like 180 degrees, the list of all the vehicles involved and their status. You know REALISM....
War Thunder is better!
Or you know my favourite realistic mechanic in the game is when your shell does a 45 degree turn to the right as soon as it leaves the barrel, cause RNG is fair and totally fun mechanic.
Mark sounds super enthusiastic too
Underestimating your enemy has frequently been a fatal mistake
Love or hate the Soviet Union, we have to admit that it was ahead of it's time in gender equality.
A super wife !!!
A grieving widow could be devastating for enemies, Maria proved it
Exceptional video
Thanks mark
I'm not fond of communists, but I respect anyone who fights and dies for their country.
She was also avenging her husband
Totally agree
I don't think the people had much choice at this stage
Back in this woman's day they revolted against the rulers of Russia who did not care about the poverty of the people and thus Communism became the way to revolt against the ruling class.
There’s a difference between Communists or Nazis and people just fighting for their country. Most of the soldiers weren’t communist or fascist, just some people wanting to fight
Someone could make an epic movie out of this story.
my kind of feminism
Иван Христов : Absolutely! A real feminist joins a tank crew to avenge her beloved
Yet another gem of history that I'd never heard of before. Thank you Dr. Mark!
She did her best, and out of love ❤️
I am addicted to your videos and very inspired every time you post one.
Dawit Ketema, same here! I hang on his every word!!! 🌟
How was this not made into a movie? It could be so good
just incredible the scale and level of intensity of the fighting , littlerley millions of heros
This is one of the most amazing WWII stories I have ever heard...
For the picture showing a soviet tank in Berlin, I don't think that is a T-34-85 but a IS-2, isn't it?
It is indeed
yep two IS-2
Something so dramatic that even Stalin had to take a moment to think - Great story as always, Mark...
I like to think that if Tanks have souls, and I believe they do, the 4th so-named unit fired a few rounds in honour of the woman
Great storey Mark. It's left me practically speachless. It's what you call dedication.
The tank should have been named 'Angry Widow'. This is another great video, Mark.
Fighting girlfriend...

NEVERMIND WINTER, MY GIRL IS COMING, BETTER START RUNNING!
This should be a storyline in BF5, not the goddamm "brave", "independence" "wahmen" in Norway. That mission is an insult to the real Telemak heroes
For real...
This is one incredible story that will possibly never happen again for thousands of years.
Whichever side you support, whatever your politics, this is a wonderful story of individual commitment driven by passion. Thank you.
Fantastic footage. I've never seen that clip of the T-34 smashing over that barricade.
Earliest I've ever been to one of these. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and hope you continue to make them.
YES! I was fervently hoping you would cover this amazing Lady. There are so many accounts of the 800,000 Russian, female heroes during WW2, who were incredible warriors and as effective as any man. It's a shame their stories go virtually untold because of the animosity that exists between East and West. They were true heroes that didn't need spandex to declare the fact.
Read the story of the Russian female pilots the Germans called "The night Witches" I also think that Mark has a video about them,it's an incredible story.
Damn that last pic of the tank next to the reichstag (sp) is just amazing! Imagine being able to teleport into that picture during that time! Now that would Be that most amazing thing ever!!
Giancarlo Eiras if I was there I’d be shot for being an American in the Soviet occupied zone.
Amazing isn't the word I would use when teleporting to hell on Earth.
She may have gotten unrequested special treatment at first ( 5 months training in 1943? ) but boy did she earn her comrades respect. Great Patriotic Russian
The glasses on the man in the propaganda poster at 3:46, i have a pair of those!! Very rare, my favourite sunglasses.
I salute this very brave woman. Incredible story.
a man could only dream to find such a woman. solute
December 12th....voting slip...Mark Felton.✔
When your earlier in this video than the 7th panzer devision on their way to france...
When you realize being early doesn't mean anything and you can watch the video at any given point.
Im the 1st one to comment and im so early That the German are on the way to Poland
Definitely don't want to face a mad Soviet woman driving a t-34. Excellent as always Dr. Felton
Great stories that need to be told. Keep them coming Mark and we'll keep watching. Thanks for all the hard work, I have learnt so much.😊
Thanks Mark, some people just lead incredible lives.
Love your videos Mr. Felton!
9:55 Hmm... It's clearly JS-2
He erroneously used a photo of an unrelated tank. The tank in question with БОЕВАЯ ПОДРУГА written on it on other photos is a T-34/76.
Hmm... IS-2 there fixed it for ya 😉
It sure is.
Hmm...
ksztyrix haha idk how he thought that was a t34
Amazing content as always from Mark Felton!
hitler: i fear no man, but that woman, she scares me
A very moving story, thanks for relating it, with, as usual, good references!
If your going to die, die with your boots on.
Amazing story, I had no idea about this. Thanks for sharing!
What a Heroine RIP.! Great story mate Mark. Well done. :)
Respect. She knew how to make the Krauts "get their panzers in a twist!" 👊🏼🔥
Wow. Tough Dame. Much respect.
This was fascinating to me. Thank you so much for all your efforts!!
Thank you for this incredible story of heroism.
"I think you'll agree that there's nothing more enjoyable than a spot of armoured mayhem." What a great introduction to World of Tanks!
Great story, thank you for bringing it to us!
I love these stories. It’s a real shame modern feminists don’t give these brave and fearless women any credit.
Because they aren't feminists anymore, rather feminazis.
No they would rather just watch the all-female Ghostbusters and tell each other how good it is.
Another great video Dr. Felton. Obscure personalities and events are what bring history alive for me. Bravo to you sir for your work and I shout encore, encore, encore!
What a badass woman.
she prooved to be fearless and better than many men,she deserves respect
Another great story Mark, thanks for what you do.
Incredible story. Can't thank you enough for the post.
I can't get enough of your stories. I have been avidly following you Dam Busters book, and I would really like to get an autographed copy, it would mean a lot to me. Keep up the great work. and writing great books!
Outstanding courage !
Thank you Mr. Felton for discovering these stories to us . May all of us in the present make the best use of knowing history so that we may honour those who went before us and never allow past mistakes to repeat .
Her fighting Spirit made it all the way to Berlin. Respekt!
Great story. Thanks for digging this up.
That was an Amazing Story, such that it was... Thanks for sharing...
I can only imagine what went through her head when she got a letter back from Stalin. Whether it was actually written by him, or a office clerk that's still p cool propaganda is powerful.
Keep up the history so it may never be forgotten. Thank you
Yet another fantastic war experience that is normally never heard about, thanks for researching and making it.
Thanks to the native Russian speakers who have provided alternate translations for "fighting girlfriend". Sister-in-Arms works fine in English.
Mark Felton, where do you find these great stories? Keep them coming.
I don't want her to be my exgirlfriend.
...Hate to see what happens...
She's her husband but she requested it name to be girlfriend..
Wow, what a great story! Thanks mark!!!
