The Cologne Tank Duel

  • In the closing chapters of the war the German fortress city of Cologne needed to be taken. Ordered to get to the Rhine, Eagle 7 a brand new Pershing tank, went up against the might of the German Panther. Adam Makos wrote the excellent book Spearhead which details the war from the view of the crew of Eagle 7, and it's gunner, Clarence Smoyer.

Clarence lives 15 minutes from me in Allentown PA and always went to the ww2 weekend at the Mid-Atlantic air museum every year like I did. When I learned that he goes to the airshow I talked to one of the tankers there and asked where he was because I was a huge fan of him. It was sad because he told me he hadn't seen him this year which was odd because he's usually everywhere. We later learned that he fell ill and would pass away a few months later. I never got the chance to meet him in this life but I can wait 60-70 more years to meet him in the next one. What a hidden gem he was.

It’s refreshing to hear a Russian say this. More often Russians say the Western Allies waited too long, and didn’t contribute much. And did it for selfish reasons, etc. The West contributed what they could. Yes I know the Soviets made the largest sacrifice by far, but the West contributed and earned a mention.

Eagle 7 didn't have stars on the hull, and the gun was aimed at the Panther, so Bartelborth probably couldn't see the stars on the sides of the turret. This was also 1945, there was no standard paint color for German tanks anymore, there were still tanks with Desert or Eastern Front camo that were redistributed to western divisions (in the book, the other German crew it follows got a "new" Pz.IV still in Italian Campaign camo). No one had seen the T26 before, he saw that long gun and muzzle brake and probably thought it was a Tiger at first.

I remember the battle of tanks in Cologne has been recorded by two American soldiers at the film recording department when they used one of the buildings. Although the film swayed due to the Pershing's shots at the Panther, it was one of the few moments of a tank vs tank combat in WWII.
Still, I also hope the Pershing gunner finds this video and find it amazing.

Panther crew: hol up, wait a minute. That's a German tank.

Read the book Spearhead by Adam Makos. The some of the US crew and German crew meet up after the war. Both sides suffering from PTSD.
One of the German tankers: "What could I have said that happened in the war? Nobody understands this".

To be honest, the Sherman still performed admirably for both 75 and 76mm cannons. Not perfect but it got the job done

I know I'm a bit late... but.... yeah... the M4 was a tank that had to _work_ a literal ocean away from where it was built, thus, the designers made damn sure that nothing went into a production tank unless it worked as advertised. There was also the mindset of the tanks needing to be easy to get in, and out. So even though it was easy for a Panther or Tiger to knock out a Sherman, there was a good chance that many of the guys inside one would survive to fight another day. And even better for the Sherman, all of the parts were standardized to fit the tanks, which made repairs and regular maintenance very easy for the crews. So, for all the flak the Sherman gets for being a "Death Trap"... it was actually quite dependable, functionally immune to most German tank guns at battle ranges from the front(only the longer 75 on the Panther, and the 88s or bigger could reliably penetrate the Sherman from the front), and easily repairable should something happen. And most importantly, if the tank was hit and burning, evacuation was incredibly easy. An intact crew can get another tank and fight on after all.

Take away is vast numerical superiority and masses of air and artillery support and its merely a so so tank.

3 out of the 5 Sherman crewmen were killed by the Panther shots. 2 out of the 5 Panther crewmen were killed by the Pershing shots. The Panther crewmen get out no slower.
There is this unfortunate new myth now that declares the Sherman to be the most survivable tank of WW2 and the easiest to get out of. Yet a British medical report showed that even the Cromwell was safer and more survivable.
