  • The Doctor Who episode 'The Unicorn and the Wasp' originally had an entirely different opening scene, where we see an elderly Agatha Christie in a care home and struggling to remember the events of the episode. However, at some point during production, Russell T Davies decided to cut both this and the original ending scene (where the Doctor and Donna visit old Agatha), choosing to begin the episode with the Doctor and Donna’s arrival in 1926 instead. This video attempts to recreate the original opening for the episode. Enjoy!

This is what Russell had to say about the original opening on the deleted scenes extra for the Series 4 DVD boxset: “The whole thing was framed by old Agatha in bed. It was a really nice scene that read very well on the page but when you watch the episode you get the feeling that everything was taking place in the past tense; that the Doctor and Donna's adventure was bracketed by old Agatha recounting her adventures, and it took all drama out of it. So we took a very deep breath with this, and it was a great shame for the actors involved but we cut it.”

This wouldn't fit into the episode but it would make for a fantastic trailer for it

I think if it ended with “doctor who?” line it would have been nice but overall very well done!

Great scene. But, gives to much away from the rest of the episode. If they’d added an ending, it would have served as a great “Mini-sode” as a companion feature for the main episode, DVD extra or webisode.

There actually was an ending scene that was also deleted. I agree, this and that would’ve made a great companion minisode

This was cut because it would've only made sense with an alternate ending they cut. I think this scene is really tacky tbh, im glad they didn't do the care home route

This scene is a little on the nose. Like, it’s fine, but it wouldn’t have worked in the episode very well in my opinion. Still interesting to see though.

"Who is he? Who is the Doctor?"
"Who is he! Who is the Doctor!"
"Who is he? Who is the Doctor!"
It works on several levels. Not the first time the writers have used this device in the program. Won't be the last. Should have kept it in because is would have appealed to different audiences on different levels. That has always been the program's strength. And long may it continue to be so! Cheers from the Land Down Under.
