The Unicorn and the Wasp - Original Ending | Doctor Who Series 4

- The Doctor Who episode 'The Unicorn and the Wasp' originally had an entirely different ending, where the Doctor and Donna visit an elderly Agatha Christie in 1976 and show her directly the legacy her books have. However, at some point during production, Russell T Davies decided to cut both this and the original opening scene, and so a new ending was filmed with the Doctor and Donna discussing Agatha's books in the TARDIS instead. This video attempts to recreate the original ending for the episode. I hope you enjoy it.
If you enjoyed this video please give it a like, and I'll be sure to make more like it in the future. And let me know what you make of the ending in the comments! Do you prefer it to the ending we got or are you glad it was cut?

This is what Russell had to say about the original ending on the deleted scenes extra for the Series 4 DVD boxset: “The whole thing was framed by old Agatha in bed. It was a really nice scene that read very well on the page but when you watch the episode you get the feeling that everything was taking place in the past tense; that the Doctor and Donna's adventure was bracketed by old Agatha recounting her adventures, and it took all drama out of it. So we took a very deep breath with this, and it was a great shame for the actors involved but we cut it.... So this now is the full and complete ending. Having seen old Agatha at the beginning of the episode, the whole story then rounds up at the end of the episode by seeing old Agatha again."

i cannot believe 2020 is the first time i’m seeing this
Me neither, I really thought most people were aware of this scene.
DoctorBlue but then again, when i was 10/11, i wasn’t likely to watch anything other than the pure content of a show 🤷🏻♂️ whereas now i almost live for behind the scenes and deleted scenes
Same!
@Crazyvids.com recently Neil Gaiman released some cut scripts for the doctors wife and if you search for videos of cut scenes there are loads
RIGHT???
imagine how annoyed that woman must be when they cut the ending
Ollie she still appeared on Who in ‘87.
ArtNPhotographyPics27Insta I think Equity would take issue if she wasn’t paid for a full scene. 😂
She must have been very sad
@@Cazziey She got to meet David Tennant, Catherine Tate, and get paid. I wouldn't be sad. Plus, this lady already appeared in Doctor Who before. In a 1987 episode, so I'm told.
@@androzani84productions85 who is she
It's good they cut it because Richard Curtis later wrote a variation of this with Vincent Van Gogh which was far more powerful and emotional.
Or how about the ending to Family Of Blood? Not quite the same but similar good ending.
@@Myne1001 yeah also nothing to do with this
@@thatsmadcrazy8953 What about Inception? Cracking ending, kept you guessing
Agreed. This one is lacking... "flair" for lack of a better word. Doesn't feel right.
The Van Gogh was better. Agreed. I wouldn't have been mad if they left this ending in though.
"And a body in the library" Trailer plays for Silence in the Library
hey who turn out the lights
Rude, both of you!😭
I thought the same thing. Don't you dare go there 😭😭😭💔
@@kaitlynmaxwell3737 @UCEd6wVI_kEvT51ox-bVYjlg To where? River being sent into a computer to live out her life with her friends forever? Yeah, sounds sad...
Donna's even wearing the same outfit
I see what they were going for but it felt kind of... meh. The Van Gogh episode succeeded perfectly, this scene was probably cut out for a good reason.
Also, that actress doesn't look at all like Fenella Woolgar!
The Doctor really is an omen of dead. If you are famous, he comes around telling you how great you were just before you die.
If I had a nickel for every time the Doctor showed a famous person their legacy just before their death, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice
I feel like this leads into the next episode “Silence in the Library” really well
I’ve always found this story underrated. A really interesting alternative ending.
Couldn't agree more! :D
Me too. I love how fun and lighthearted it is!
DoctorBlue agreed. It’s a 7/10 for me.
Clacka the Geek! It was a fantastic episode and everyone says it’s shite
This story is amazing! It's a fun watch with humor, mystery, sci-fi, and history that makes one want to learn more of Agatha Christie.
never knew this scene existed! what a lovely little addition to the story😊
I'm surprised - I thought most fans knew about it! I agree, I think it actually makes the episode more memorable.
Not gonna lie this ending feels very forced so it was the better choice to not go for it.
I like it but I’m glad they didn’t use it. It feels a bit too in your face and too happy
The emperor dalek must be exterminate
I don't mind that they cut this but it is honestly so heartwarming. Rather than the Doctor just walking away and moving on, he comes back to make them feel better about whatever has happened. He and Donna try to make her smile again. It just warms my heart.
Meh. Something felt very, off. I think it was a mistake for her to recognise the Doctor and Donna so easily and quickly. Lacked emotion.
Plus, there was something deeper in the fact Agatha never knew how great she was, but she had a great life and she didn't need to be shown she was valued.
Whereas with Vincent Van Gogh, knowing he was brilliant and valued made things a little different. Less bitter maybe. Showing him the future of his work was about giving him a gift he desperately needed. Even if it didn't mean he had a happy ending.
And Agatha Christie certainly knew how great she was ... even in 1926.
I got a little shiver when Agatha said about how she “Got on with my life.” after losing and forgetting. Foreshadowing Donna’s story perhaps. I agree with many others that while sweet I understand why it was cut.
I must admit. Although this was somewhat sweet. The one we ended up with was much better
i really wanted Copyright Donna Noble in the actual ending
That would have been Fabulous!
I understand why this was cut, it feels scripted and the acting is a bit off. Interesting though!
It's really amazing seeing this for the first time, it feels like 10 and Donna are still about in the TARDIS and this was a little snippet into what they're doing. But of course because it's time travel they are around somewhere.
Never saw this before. Nice but I'm glad that they didn't use it. The one they used is a better ending.
62jacco and also she wouldn’t believe a word of it that the book said 5 Billion
Thanks for sharing this DoctorBlue. I'm one of those who didn't know this alternate ending existed.
Pleasure! I'm really surprised at the amount of people who didn't know this ending existed!
So this was the original idea for the ending of Vincent and the Doctor. I think it worked better for Vincent
Mario Bowser494 Yh he suffered and it was so satisfying and emotional to see him finally see just how much his work is appreciated this felt a little bit too on the nose and would have ruined the point of the episode a bit

Thanks for the feedback. You'll be pleased to know that I have more videos like this planned. In fact, another alternate episode ending should be coming out this week! Make sure you're subscribed so that you don't miss it.
HOW I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF THIS?!
Yeah, I remember seeing this on the deleted scenes on my Series 4 boxset back in the day. A really heartfelt scene, honestly surprised they never used this!
Aww. This was so heartwarming. I'm surprised they cut it. This episode was actually quite good, I think, and this ending probably would've been better than the one we got, congrats on finding it.
It's actually on the Series 4 DVD so wasn't hard to find!
@@tvguy61 Wherever the deleted scenes are.
This was so wholesome to watch
I never knew this ending existed. The Unicorn and the Wasp is one if my all time favourite DW episodes, and as much as I love this ending, I'm glad it was cut. Thanks for sharing this with us! You learn something new everyday
My pleasure! I'm really glad you've learnt something new about one of your favourite episodes :)
The music for these scenes are definitely a reference to Poirot.
It's 2020 and I'm just seeing this
I miss ten and donna so much

While I can see why it was cut, it was nice to see them go and visit Agatha and tell her how much of a beloved author she is even 5 billion years in the future :)
Well that was a rollercoaster of emotions
That’s interesting but kinda feels tacked on.
My favorite episode with my favorite author, my favorite Doctor and favorite companion. This was the perfect episode for me personally.
I understand why it was cut, but I'm so glad I got to see it . It's adorable.
Ahh, this takes me BAACK
This is so nice to see, it was my favourite episode when I was a kid
Wow, I’ve never seen this! Thank you for sharing
No worries!
Her books will be read for all-time! She is by far one of the best writers the world will ever see!...
Thank God it was cut
I like this seen very much and thank you for sharing this scene
I think this had more impact on me seeing this here and now than it would have if it had been originally used. So I'm happy for that.
Loved it,but still can't believe I haven't watched it all this time, for once in my life thank you CZcams recommend algorithm for making my day.
I never even knew this existed! Thanks for sharing!
No problem!
I am crying right now! You made me cry! I loved that episode so much and I admire Agatha Christie's work! Dare to making me cry again I dare ya!
it begins with a body in the library
This is such a sweet scene! I see why it wasn’t used, but still so lovely to watch.
Woah!!! I never knew this existed!! Thank you for sharing :D
You're most welcome. I'm surprised you didn't already know about it - I thought most people did!
@@DoctorBlueDW Yeah honestly had no clue xD Ah well thank you so much for bringing it back into the limelight :D
Yea
how have i NEVER seen this?!
This is still my favorite episode.
WOW. This scene is amazing. I loved it. It truly touched my heart. Love you Agata Christie, Doctor and Donna Noble or known as DoctorDonna
It was good to see this but I prefer the ending we actually had. Better set up of the idea Agatha's stories are read forever
Never knew this was a thing, I found it quite interesting. Reading the description it sounds like RTD was originally intending a Titanic-esque bookend, I'm glad I got to watch it :)
I remember seeing this on the dvd extras like 10-11 years ago
Thanks for sharing, I'd never seen (nor heard of) this alternate ending before. It was sweet, but rather dull. I'm glad RTD changed his mind and cut the framing scenes, as they don't really add much.
You're most welcome. I can't believe how many people were unaware of this scene! I really thought most people knew about it due to it being on the Series 4 DVD.
this is a really wholesome scene :D
I’m glad they did it use this
I like to just imagine this actually happened but slightly better made, that's the beauty of headcanons
Well this makes me emotional
Even if this wasn’t used and in right reason, it still warms my heart
Aw that's lovely. Such a sweet little ending.
Has a late classic vibe. I can see why it was cut, but it's still a lovely ending.
I think it was a good idea to cut this, it feels a lot less poignant or meaningful than when the Doctor are talking about it in the TARDIS
Huh, very interesting. Thanks for this!
My pleasure!
I get why this was cut, but it foreshadowed Donna and Silence In The Library so well.
Love her theme tune
Nice to see they revisited this premise with the Van Gogh episode - there's something incredibly powerful about showing people their legacy and what impact they had on the world
Absolutely. It's a shame this scene was deleted as I think it would have made the episode a lot more memorable.
I enjoyed this ending and it was fun to see.
That soundtrack though
we need a director's cut of this episode or maybe in the blue-ray, they can find a way to the version with an alternate ending.
I'm glad they went with the other ending but this actually awesome two
I love reading her books, on English, Hungatian. Serbian languages. And I love dr Who. And Donns Noble too. Thank you
Thank god they cut this lol
It had 1 billion in numbers in the original episode
It a beautiful video to see it on CZcams 😌
Love it!!
Wow I never knew there was another ending 😯, this ending was still good as the one they used
im glad they didnt use this ending, would have taken away from that great ending with 11 and vincent
This is a much better ending. So glad I saw this.
I remember this scene well. The Doctor & Donna Noble.
My little heard just exploded. HOW have I never come across this before??
Tears
Aww I like that ending so much better
How are we just seeing this! You guys have too many secrets! Keep all these gems hidden for years
Actually this scene has always been available to view on the Series 4 DVD. Somehow a lot of people missed it though.
@@DoctorBlueDW damn! I never knew. I've not bought the dvd editions cause of netflix lol thanks
This is pretty poor in my honest opinion. Glad they cut it. Interesting to see though!
shame. It was a lovely ending and like father's day made me cry.
I feel like it makes sense that they cut this. It seems unrealistic that Agatha would just accept that the Doctor and Donna are back, look the same, she suddenly remembers that day, her book was published in the year 6 billion... but if they made Agatha skeptical to keep it realistic and had the Doctor and Donna take the time to really convince her of all this, the details would bog down the scene so much it would take all the poignancy out of it.
This was so cute!
I think if we never got the Vincent ending this would have so much more of an impact
I cannot believe this scene exists
This is better than the other one
I loved it. 💖
Dam tear jerking
I think this ending was so sweet but had they put it in it might not have left the mystery of the moment so well.
I know this is unrelated to this episode however in The Day Of The Doctor, at the start, ten was with queen elisabeth the first. In The End Of Time - Part one, he references what hes been up to and mentions good queen bess aka elisabeth the First and to quote "and let me tell you, her nickname is no longer..." signalling that he did remember what they did in The Day Of The Doctor. he didnt forget!
I think the memory loss only occurs from the moment two doctors meet? Not that any rules were ever established around this
It’s implied that the 11th Doctor was able to remember it, hence the line “Oh yeah, this is where I come in“ when he sees the portal appear in the room with the paintings
@The Nyan Man The Doctor forgets time spent with future incarnations, so the only part of 'Day of the Doctor' the Tenth Doctor remembers is proposing to Elizabeth I and then running away from a Zygon. You could argue that he returned to Elizabeth after the events of this episode, however this is just speculation. Either way, that's why he remembered her.
didn't know this actually existed! it's cute
Wow! I have the Series 4 DVD but somehow I missed this.
This would’ve been great seeing this scene in doctor who
Nobody EVER writes them better.
I've been a Who fan ever since I was 6 years old.. I'm 16 now and I've only just found out about this scene!
