    *************
    The Behringer Model D is a great analog synth - and by design it's monophonic. However, if you've seen my channel before, you know I'm not going to let that stop me from trying to play more than one note at a time with it, something that has a unique characteristic in synthesizers that are intended to be monophonic.
    You can't control any of its 3 oscillators separately, but there's a fourth oscillator that can be controlled independently, and that's the filter - via a dedicated CV input - and when you crank up emphasis all the way, it resonates and creates its own tone. The nice thing about the D, is that there's resonance both in high pass and in low pass modes, which opens up a lot of sonic possibilities.
    This does require a little configuration trick. When playing duo-phonically, the keyboard sends two notes - so we need a way to tell the D's oscillators to play one, and the filter to play the other.
    In the particular case of the Arturia Keystep, which is what I use in this clip, that's achieved by setting note priority on the D to LOW, and CV out priority on the Keystep to HIGH. CV then controls the high note, and MIDI the low one. This trick lets you play two notes at once on the D.
    The final piece in the puzzle is that the Behringer Model D's CV tracking on the filter doesn't quite track at 1 volt per octave, but it's close enough. If you're playing the filter notes in a one octave range, depending on your sensitivity, that might not be noticeable, but it does become apparent across a few octaves. The way to solve this is to interject a module like Befaco's A*B+C, which, with a bit of fiddling back and forth, can produce a result which tunes quite nicely. Since I don't have the module, I used the techniques shown in my "hybrid modular" video to use a virtual version of that module in VCV Rack.
    NOTE: Occasionally I’ll try out affiliate marketing and include affiliate links. This means that I may earn a commission when you click on or make purchases via affiliate links. The content of this clip is entirely my opinion, and was not paid for or dictated in any what by the company creating the gear. Loopop has been one of our greatest musical resources over the past six months. We went from having never touched a synth to having a room full of them and a newly recorded album on the way with an entirely new flavor than anything we had done before. Many of the tools that we used to get us there came from this channel. Thank you, Mr. Pop.

    I'm yet to own a single bit of the kit you showcase in your videos, but I always find it fascinating how you manage to find creative solutions to extend the capabilities of an instrument by understanding & demonstrating how its mechanics and design work. I really enjoy your explanation of how everything works & your thought process, it's inspired me to dig a bit deeper and think creatively with my equipment when producing.

    Tried this combined with an FM synthesis patch, narrow square wave OSC3 modulating OSC1 in the audio range and tuned to a harmonic. Made for a crazy doomsday organ sound. Lots of twiddling to find the sweet spot where it all locks together (between modulation, osc detune, filter cutoff/contour and sustain), but it’s there. Definitely helps to set the keyboard two octaves down and run the oscillators on 8’ - gives a nice balance between the low (osc) notes and high (filter) notes.

    As always, very good video. I do have a totally different question for you: can you tell me how you created the vies of the waves in the tool at the top of the screeen. Looks like an oscillograph, but it may be "only" a software tool. Thanks a lot for letting me know from a Behringer fan in Germany; at the moment I do have the odyssey, the Vocoder VC340 and the Deepmind 12. However I am thnking to add to this either the model D or the Poly D.

    Brilliant. Thanks.
    I was wondering about the tracking (I don't own a Model D, yet). I have a Doepfer SEM filter (Eurorack module), which is playable but doesn't track well. I wondered if it was adjustable, but I hadn't thought of using a multiplier to interpret for it.
    I could probably make something to do that, relatively easily. I'll give it some thought.

    In your opinion, how does this synth stack up against the mother-32? which device would you deem more flexible/powerful (standalone) and why?

    • @loopop
      @loopop  Před 6 lety +4

      You know it's funny I had them side by side to compare the bass the other day and Mother-32 had more oomph with one oscillator than this with 3 - but other than that, there's no short answer. 3 means more tonal flexibility and D still sounds great. Since Mother has a sequencer that makes it more flexible standalone. Of course add a keystep to the D and you get a keyboard, sequencer and arpeggiator, and it will still cost less than the Mother-32. Also, are patch points important to you? Mother-32 has the advantage there. Anyway, no short answer, but I made videos on both so hopefully that will help you decide...

    It sounds great but am I overreacting by thinking the “out of tune” thing is a dealbreaker? I want to buy one but that issue is making me hesitant.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  Před 6 lety +2

      Michael Young well this is different - this is the filter cv, which wasn’t advertised to track 1v per octave. Regarding my previous video about tuning overall - I agree is an issue otherwise I wouldn’t mention it. Not sure I would call it a deal breaker, but yeah opening it up wasn’t fun

    • @TheNevadaProject
      @TheNevadaProject Před 6 lety

      loopop is that synth “os updatable”? I’m thinking if it is, I hoping behringer can and will fix the tuning issue with an os update.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  Před 6 lety +2

      Michael Young yes it is updatable but I don’t think that portion is. Again, what’s shown in this video is ok, in my previous one - an issue to consider

    I just tried this with my Moog Subsequent 37 CV and my Behringer Model D with strange results. Using the cv out mapped to “KB pitch” didn’t work, but mapping the cv out to the pitch wheel did. So is the pitch wheel cv and pitch out ... something else?

    If I hear another person make claims of an extra vco by putting the filter's resonance at 100% and using the cutoff level to tune that vco, I'm going to lose my shit, yeah sure, technically that could be measured by an oscilloscope, but your giving up use your filter, for a shity, barely in tune sine wave that also keeps one from modulating anything "practically" that would involve the filter. Synths dont have key traking for nothing, it's self explanatory, this is not a new discovery, many synths have this feature and it's not some kind of mystery, key traking should be obvious, wouldn't be so bad if you didn't seem so proud of yourself.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  Před 5 lety +1

      How myopic of you to think that just because you know something, everyone else does, and what a waste of your precious knowledgable time to even click and watch a tutorial with this title. Quite a lot of people don't know this as you can see from comments on this video and others where I show this trick. Even worse, I'll keep showing it because it's a cool one, so you really should stay away from this channel else risk "losing it" quite a lot. Tracking works quite well in this synth and others and not many people know that it's a great way to play another kind of tone with a synth - a standalone sine wave, not to mention in conjunction with another oscillator.
