Gotta tell ya. I`m a rocker and have been one my entire life. I just remember all of us despising disco and this type of music when I was a kid. I mean hated it! Looking back, when I saw a TV special on this guy, around 20 years later. My appreciation for this cat grew Immensely. Also that he was probably the only guy that had a full band with real musicians backing him, no drum machines either! I really dig his unique style and his music just wants to make you wanna get up and dance. KC, you`re alright with me brother! Every song I`ve ever heard from you is very compelling!
I agree, but I'm also compelled to point out that KC and the Sunshine Band's first big hit "Rock Me Baby" (sung by George McCrae) actually featured digital drums. It sounded great, so I'm not knocking it. The bass player, Rick Finch, was the musical brains behind it. He was content to be the musical mastermind behind the scenes and doesn't get the credit he deserves these days. Apparently, he also got screwed out of half his deserved songwriting royalties owing to a strange contract he supposedly agreed to back in the early 80s that gave KC a hundred percent of the royalties.
@@tekharthazenyatta2310 I completely agree with everything you said, except for the last part. I have seen from DIFFERENT sources, in different places, that the songs were basically written by KC with bits such as song titles randomly contributed by Rick Finch. Rick was "genius" when it came to producing and arranging, and was VERY instrumental in creating the sound of their songs. Realizing the importance of Rick's contributions and knowing song writers got the best deal in royalties, KC wanted both of them to be listed as song writing collaborators. (This evened out the "distribution curve" of the music industry and was overall more "fair" to Rick.) Aside from this info. being dispelled by TK employees who were there during that time, you have to look at how human nature functions. Musicians think of their songs as creative art, and cherish them as such. I don't believe KC was a big enough a**hole to "steal" from another artist he had worked SO closely with, I think he had more respect than that. As musicians tend to be possessive of their song writing creations, I don't believe Rick would have just given them away for a "pittance". Is an artist going to just "sign away" something they TRULY created?......GET REAL, I DON'T think so. He was willing to sign away "song writing" rights because he WASN'T the writer. They BOTH had attorneys at the time, and Rick did NOT have to sign if he really didn't want to. It was a straight forward legal agreement which HAS stood up to time and legal challenges. KC went "back" on his plan to reward Rick, and Rick went "back" on his public acknowledgement of KC as the song-writer. It looks like something VERY bad went down between the two of them, ONLY those two know what it was. Whether or not Rick was TRULY content about just "being behind the scenes" is something ONLY he truly knows. I think that the fact that the "attention" (at least from the public) pretty much ALL went to KC was behind the huge rift that occurred between them. All that being said, it needs to be acknowledged that Rick has NOT received anywhere near the credit he DESERVES!
