Bee Gees - You Should Be Dancing

- "You Should Be Dancing" is a single by the Bee Gees, from the album, Children of the World, in 1976. The single hit number one for one week on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number one for seven weeks on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart, and in July the same year, reached number five on the UK Singles Chart. The song also peaked at number four on the Billboard R&B chart. It was this song that first launched the Bee Gees into disco stardom, although rock-oriented drums and guitars can be heard in the background. It was also the only track from the group to top the dance chart.
The song was their third Billboard Hot 100 number-one and their sixth number-one in Canada. It ended up the year as the #31 song of the year on the Hot 100. It also hit number four in Ireland. In Australia, where the brothers spent a number of years in their youth, it managed only to nick the top 20.
"You Should Be Dancing" is known today as the first chart-topper in which Barry Gibb uses his now-trademark falsetto (he had previously used it on the top-10 "Nights on Broadway" and on "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)". Earlier songs, such as Jive Talkin', had Gibb use a melodic blue-eyed soul vocal style.
The song was prominently featured in the movie Saturday Night Fever and appears on its soundtrack album. Live performances of "You Should Be Dancing" during the 1979 Spirits Having Flown tour featured the Bee Gees' younger sibling, Andy Gibb, on backing vocals.
This song and the scene from the movie containing the song were seen and heard in the film Short Circuit. Other movies where the song is heard are Donnie Brasco and Despicable Me.
The Boston Celtics also play this song when they are about to win a basketball game accompanied by the ever popular "Dancing Gino" video from the television show American Bandstand. Recently, the Tampa Bay Rays have started playing the song at home games between innings. - Hudba
Probably the most iconic dance scene in a motion picture ever.
Even if you didn’t watch the movie it’s etched in everyone’s minds, even nowadays thanks to Gru (well really the producers of Despicable Me and some other kids animated movies out these days keeping real music pumping in our kids’ bloods...thanks to them for showing the kids good music)
probably the best disco hit ever...........
i totally agree.
Travolta is in both of the greatest dance scenes.. this and pulp fiction
I think JT didn't eat for a WEEK before he wore those pants! My god! How did he do it ? Or he held his breath very well!
JONH TRAVOLTA KILLED IT...
Sonny Kardan: He was given the title "Mr Disco" for that reason!!!
Yes he did

Yes he did. I bet he could still do this today.

As a small kid living in a tough south Florida neighborhood where violence seemed to rule the days I would stand outside of a local lounge that would disco on Saturday night, waiting for the doors to open so I could sneak a peek inside and see all the people in tight polyester dancing away. Seemed everyone from all races was laughing and having a great time. From that moment disco was a part of my life and still is. Long live disco and the BeeGees ♥️👍
what part of south florida?? I'm down here too and I'm looking for people to interview
That was truly beautiful!
What a cool memory

Jajajja I think the same, Im 30 years and I love love love love bee gees. And i don't speak English.
I can't dance even slightly but I still like disco style music
that is so very true. People that were intimidated by dancing in the disco music act like they didn’t like it. There has never been any music to match the music of the 70s and 80s. The song writers and the musicians were no match ever again. Awesome!🏆🤗
I like disco and people say I can dance, even though I don’t think I can
I mean I love disco but I can’t dance lol
The song is epic. John travolta's dance moves are legendary.

Stolen, just like Elvis.....

Keith Bridges how?
I was lucky enough to be in high school in the early 80's when this soundtrack was breaking all the records and they played it every 15 minutes on the radio! THIS is some GREAT music!!!!!
‘76, to be exact, great music 😊
The seventies
Most definitely.
It taught me how to dance.
But however years later many years. Got invited to a ballroom dance in South Africa, Cape Town.
We're doing the Rumba with a right nice lass. Hilary Fink. Trapeze lass.
We were dancing on the floor and and took the floor. my Father were gobsmacked. He had never seen me dancing before.
As kid me and my best mate Deitmaar used to get into club 604 at the top of the hotel in Cape Town. We used to pick up women. Funny as hell.
As Kitty previously stated, this song was released in 76. In 1977, it was part of the Saturday Night Fever Sountrack from the Movie. The movie re-popularized this song.
I was about to say 76, 77. Cos 78 was Grease.
Bring back Disco. The world needs Disco, now more than ever.
❤❤❤❤❤🎶💯
Dua Lipa's called the "new disco queen" so maybe it is coming back! haha
Yeah
Bring back coke and loose women too!✌🏼
Scumbag elites don't want us having fun TOGETHER. THAT is WHY disco was EXTINGUISHED.
This is confidence. I mean that in the way Travolta can clear the floor for his performance, and also Barry Gibbs unparalleled falsetto. We need that male confidence today.
Yes, male confidence today is oddly cloaked in oversized flannel shirts and overgrown beards--with not the slightest inclination to dance. How sad, somehow.
@@felixetienne-edouardpfeifl9996 Every day i see plenty of under 30 year old males in skinny jeans, red chinos and pink hoodies. Half of the current male pop singers seem to be quite hi pitched. So don't worry, we flannel shirted, bearded lads are not the overwhelming majority.
Travolta can dance
it,s just a film
I couldn't agree more with you. Kids sometimes get toxic masculinity with confidence. Confidence is to kill it on your own skin
I'm 80 years old now and there is no one left that is as talented as you four brothers were. I have all your songs and when I listen to them I can hear every note each of you hit as individuals and yet so together as a group. Such harmonizing and talent. One of the greatest songs of all time
Barry, Robin, Maurice and Andy Gibb. What a talented family!
I know, makes you wonder what king of DNA could create this kind of talent.
I love Andy Gibb voice in Desire from 1980, he sounds so much like Barry
The real props should be given to the Gibb parents for producing such crazy talent. And don't forget they also had a baby sister Cynthia who though not a musician a successful actress who played Karen Carpenter in a biopic on Karen as well as a few other good movies.

Thats the good and most impressive thing with 80s and 90s music, they never get too old

Agreed!
This is the best song that played in GTA 2
The high pitched singing, the disco, the guitar solo in the middle. This is the most 70’s song in my opinion.
Falsetto
I’m 68 years old. I still remember going out every week to just by the sexiest clothes to wear for Friday and Saturday nights. It’s not like today we used to dress up to the 9s. All the guys were always decked out and the women were too, the best era 70s in the 80s ever grow up in. I miss those days like everybody else in my age bracket, lots of memories ❤
It’s amazing to me both the talent of The Bee Gees and John Travolta. I was never a huge fan of disco when I was a kid in the 70’s, but now that I’m older I have a deep appreciation for it. I really missed out by not liking this in the ‘70’s.
Glad I appreciated and enjoyed this music back then.
I absolutely love this song. TRAVOLTA's moves. The Bee Gees. I love all disco and have since I was 12 years old.

I remember seeing the movie when it came out in 1976. When young John Travolta started dancing to this song, everyone in the theater back then stood up and started clapping. It was just awesome!
Those were the days! Awesome
My 9 year old granddaughter scoffs at me when I play disco yet I see one of her little feet tapping to the beat whilst the music plays. Yes, Grandma knows best!

One of the best songs 🎵, ever.. You should be Dancing 💃 🙂
Loved doing the ‘bump’ and getting hips bruised in the fun process👌♥️🎶
It seems like yesterday, when this movie changed my life. I was exactly 19 years old just like the character, and yes, I dressed like this and had a DA haircut. Even the Jewelry. And the platform shoes, until I got my Capezios. The great times I had, will never be matched by anyone today. I danced all over New York, and New Jersey. I danced in Florida Discos and in Acapulco, Mexico. I was at most of all the top clubs in Manhattan. Clubs like The Fun House, Electric Circus, Adams Apple, The Red Parrot, Limelight, Studio 54, Regines, New York New York, Chevys, Bonds, Magique, Shout, and Roseland. In other parts of the city, I liked to visit Elephas, Lemon Tree, Plaza Suite, Romeo and Juliets, Banana's, L' Amour, The Arena and yes 2001 Odyssey. When I wanted to dance Latin, Side Street and Ochentas were my choices. The Jersey Shore had some nice discos too. Montego Bay, Casablanca, D'Jais, Surf Club, Temptations and The Sundance were my place to go.
But there were two other areas that I have to mention, since they also had some of the greatest discos. Westchester County and Long Island was rich with discos. Discos like Hoops, 2nd Floor, Fonzies, Lallipop, Peach Trees, Fudgies, January's, Marty and Lenny's, 21 North and The Milky Way In Westchester. And in Long Island the list was too long for me to list. These were my favorites. Cherry's was like my home disco. The Tramps performed there regularly, and were a bunch of nice guys. Uncle Sams, Metro 700, La'tique, Chaz, 231, Zachary's, Channel 80 and my Hampton's favorites La'Plaz and Lemans. And let us not forget about Summers Beach, Hot Dog Beach and Neptune Beach.
There were so many discos in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I had a disco for every night even on Monday. I still remember watching the movie. What a great thing for the young generation, as this movie just pushed young people to dance. There was nothing better than to do the Hustle with a dance partner, girlfriend or even a stranger that you just met. I remember dancing the Hustle with two young women at the Copacabana Club at the same time, and it seemed like we danced together for years. You will never see that today. I watch young people today, who can't get off their cell phones, and who just is not in good shape for their age. This disturbs me. I would never trade those days with the present. I continued to dance and was invited on a local dance show on TV, The Soap Factory, and became a regular dancer. That was in 1978, and I met the likes of Blondie, Musique, Melba Moore, Karen Young, Amii Stewart, Anita Ward, Patrick Hernandez, A young Stephanie Mills, and Peaches and Herb. What great times. The friends that I made because of my dancing, was priceless. Friends from all over New York but I met friends from New Jersey, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, and from Florida.
And yes, my name is really Tony and 100% Italian American. And yes, people start identifying me as Tony Manero, after they watched me dance. But I would never wear that white suit. I hope this wasn't too long for some, but when I think of those days, it brings a smile to my face
That's was done life, I hope you had the greatest time of hour life, congratulations, a fantastic article about your life, thanks for taking the trouble to tell us.
I was right behind you dancing in all those city clubs.
I enjoyed reading what you wrote. My husband and I met in 77, married in 78 and from the time we met until 81, we spent most weekends Disco dancing in Northern Virginia. There were some fun clubs in NoVa back then. After our twins were born, we didn't get to go out much but, we'd still enjoy dancing together at home. Our 3 sons, now 42, 42, 39 all still talk about when I disco danced all over the house with them in my arms. They say they love disco music and those memories. I do, too.
Before I met my husband, couple of girlfriends and I spent our weekends dancing in Roanoke and Martinsville, Virginia or drive across the line to Eden, NC to their clubs. On weeknights when we couldn't find a club, we'd go to Arthur Murray's and spend the night dancing thanks to their free dance lessons. Lol

If the horn section doesn't get you going, you have no soul. LOVE THIS SONG.
Performing these dance moves today to this classic song... people would lose their minds!
I'm no dancer but would lose it on the dance floor to this song...its so driven!
I always said we had to be young in the 70's because our records were so long...needed all our energy to dance to them 🤣🤣
AWESOME.
Young John Travolta was a very good dancer too.
El mejor bailarín con estilo propio
PUFFF, tenía 10 años cuando los BEE GEES marcaron mi vida para siempre! BEE GEES por siempre!! 🎙️🔥🎶🇺🇾
que edad tienes ruco?

I just love the Bee Gees and for this fun song the added Andy this was in 76 and the Disco was injected by this and other songs on. this album, and Don a Somers was the queen if the Disco. I admit I, liked a lot of the Disco songs. All of the Bee Gees and Travolta at this time were stars and Jon had some "fine" moves. Since this came out we have lost all but one of the talented Gibbs singers and donna is also gone. But we had it all in. 1976, and this album is our proof. We had an easier time then.
