Always find it funny that such an iconic fight was added in reshoots. The original movie had the Johnny v Scorpion fight end in the woods with the kick instead of teleporting to Scorpion's domain. The Reptile fight was also added as a reshoot.

"Get over here!" isn't just Scorpion's most iconic catchphrase, he has always been voiced in the games by MK co-creator Ed Boon - and in this movie too! For the 2021 reboot, Scorpion was played by Hiroyuki Sanada, but his delivery of the famous line in the initial trailer caused such a ruckus among fans that it was specifically re-recorded by Boon for the final theatrical release. All told, Boon is one of the longest-running voice actors for a single role in gaming, at 31 years to date.

Mortal Kombat was the first movie that took video games semi-seriously. It really was a cultural touchstone picture because so many video game movies were made for younger kids. The song was already iconic before the movie. If you compare it to every movie around it, it's clearly well above and beyond what any other video game movie did. They actually cared about the games and it showed.

You guys owe both of your favorite fight scenes to early focus groups for the movie. When the movie was initially shown, one complaint was that their weren’t enough fights. So they went back to production and added the second half of Johnny’s Scorpion fight AND Lui’s fight with Reptile. A very rare instance of focus groups being right and actually helping a movie be better. Also if I remember right, Robin Shou stepped in and did the fight choreography for the two scenes. I think the original choreography had already moved on to his next project.

Goro in this movie *IS* kinda slow, but not just because he is a giant of a creature, but because Goro's effects are all practical! He is basically one giant puppet and even a suit that the legendary Tom Woodruff Jr. wore! The top half of Goro (starting from his upper arms and up) was all one giant puppet that was remote controlled by 16 people at once, everyone thing his arms and eyes and mouth and eyebrows! That is why he moves kinda stiff and janky, and didn't help that the suit constantly malfunctioned. It cost at least over a million dollars to produce and make and sculpt, but the appearance of the puppet itself was uncanny!

One of my favorite parts of the movie was both its soundtrack and musical score.
Jammed the former alot back in the day and they still hold up very well after all of these years. Each track was so good and we had peak quality of both metal and electronic/techno music. We had acts like KMFDM, Napalm Death, Type O Negative, Fear Factory, The Immortals, Traci Lords and Gravity Kills. Pretty much the whole soundtrack was a bop!
The musical score was done by George S. Clinton. It was not really a very traditional score by any means. It was mostly taiko drums, Shakuhachi flute, didgeridoos, Tuvan throat singing, violas, cellis, basses and low brass. Giving it more of an exotic mystical musical landscape. Helping with the score was legendary guitarist Buckethead, who gave us some really memorable guitar riffs and solos. Best prime example was the track Goro vs. Art, the same cue that plays when Art was facing off against Goro.
According to Clinton back in 2015, the first test screening they put a temporary score under it that was mainly traditional orchestral action music and it became clear that the target audience (my generation and the older generation generally speaking) was used to hearing techno music blasting during game play for Mortal Kombat, HATED that approach.
So they changed it to what we ended up getting instead. In some ways, I'm glad that they did that but on the other hand, I would had loved to hear the intended musical score.

The actor who played Johnny Cage also didn't know martial arts. (Couldn't do kicks very well.) But they worked around his limitations and made him look very good!
And yes, the movie was modelled greatly after the Original Mortal Kombat arcade game. (Where Goro & Shang Sung were the final bosses & Reptile was a "secret opponent" you had to "unlock" via a specific series of actions.)
And yeah, Lambert was definitely "camping it up" and it was great! Also, I THINK they intended him (Raiden) to have some fight scenes originally, but by then, his vision had gotten SO bad, it was no longer feasible.
And that theme song is PEAK 90s! Luv it.

It knows what it is, it stays completely in it's lane, the casting is spot-on, the humor is done extremely well without crossing into comedy territory... I would say this is actually one of the better movies of the mid-90s when most movies were starting to really lean into CGI like Twister, Deep Impact, Power Rangers: The Movie, The Mask, etc.

Unfortunately he declined the role. So they landed up creating a different character Johnny Cage who was posted on the side of the old arcade cabinet dawning the Bloodsport outfit.
So they approached Van Damme for a few more years and he still declined.. It wasnt until 2023 in the reboot of the original Mortal Kombat game simply titled Mortal Kombat 1, that Jean Claude Van Damme finally agreed to be in the game and Ed Boon was so excited and emotional about finally getting his childhood hero to appear in Mortal Kombat.

I love, love, love this movie. We rented it from the new arrival wall of our video store when I was (I think) 14, and I watch it 13 times in 48 hours. I was obsessed. The soundtrack was a mainstay of my high school years and Brigette Wilson was one of my all-time crushes. My biases are strong but I still think a lot of it holds up.

@@chrisjfox8715 What can I say? I was 14 and before streaming you never knew when you were actually going to get to see these things again. Like I said: I was obsessed.

Seeing this in the movie theater at that time and as a kid was just awesome! I remember skiping school just to watch it.
I will always love this movie. No matter how many movies they make today, they will never beat the PERFECT soundtrack, the casting(specially Shang Tsung) and the flawless atmosphere. They absolutely nailed the vibe and set design of MK.
Trevor Goddard and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa really set the tone for their characters in the franchise til this day.

Amazing reaction guys. This movie is so much fun and cheesy but I love it. Sub Zero has always been my favorite character in the franchise. Hope you guys react to the new movie, it's absolutely incredible.

*TBR Schmitt:* "Is this Highlander? Highlander plays Rayden?"
*Me:* "Yes, because Christopher Lambert, the guy who played Connor Macleod, played Rayden."

The excitement for this movie was thru the roof. Mortal Kombat 3 I believe just came out in arcades so this was a long time coming for fans who played since Mortal Kombat 1992

I love the BLoodsport and Van Damme references because MK was LITERALLY a Van Damme game. Boon and Tobias asked Van Damme's agent if they could basically name the game after him and they were NOT excited at the time so, they modeled Johnny Cage AFTER Van Damme. Now, Van Damme's a skin for Cage in the new MK 2023.

The character Johnny Cage was created in the image of Van Damme during the creation of the game, the role in the film was also offered to Van Damme, but he chose a film based on another fighting game - a street fighter who had a bigger budget and was considered more profitable, but in fact, the mortal kombat blew up the box office, and the street fighter failed.
