SOURCE VIDEO FOR MY LESSON AND COVER . THIS SOLO IS PURE BRILLIANCE!!! The lines show a really deep understanding of both the song structure and the tradition of his musical background. It's also extremely virtuoustic and contains of all the hallmark's that make Glen's playing legendary. Beautiful phrasing, octave runs, arpeggios and sweep, the odd outside notes and chromatic runs weaved in so masterfully. This was REALLY hard to copy- probably the hardest cover I've done.
Clean Strat (sounds like early 60s to me) with no gain to hide behind. (distortion sounding guitars are much easier to play and hide a multitude of sins)
Anyway, here's the cleaned up video- I remixed the sound, applying EQ, rounded out the bass, and normalized the peaks, with about a 3 db gain addition. This sounds better than the original video I took it from.
Guitar players who dig Glen - PLEASE SUBSCRIBE. I have other classic CG solo covers and lessons posted here, with much more on the way. - Hudba
There never was, and never will be, another like Glenn Campbell.
Indeed
Not true. I went to school with a guy named Glenn Campbell. He was a pudgy guy who had bad acne. I heard he works for the water district these days and will retire soon.
Michael Thompson c
Roy Clark?
Roy Clark is great! Glen is better though.
Hendrix was asked "What is like being the worlds greatest guitar player?" Jimi pointed to Glen Campbell and replied "He's over there , go and ask him".
not a true story lol
Should’ve been a true story because jimi was never in Glens Class !
Funny. As far as I remember in reality Hendrix said this about Terry Kat.
Hendrix said it about Rory Gallagher.
@@dcjway He never said it about anyone! lmao.
Thank GOD glen recorded these songs before he left us.
Glen was without a doubt one of the best guitarists on the planet. He is truly missed! Rest in peace Rhinestone Cowboy!!
My gosh, he shredded this song!
One of the most underrated guitarists of all time. He is sorely missed, but that guitar playing and wonderful voice will still be inspiring for others 1000 yrs from now.
Yet he was acknowledged as the godfather of guitar by all of the greatest players!
that strat has seen some use
Not underrated
No one with knowledge of guitar players considers Glenn Campbell “underrated”. Renowned guitarists appreciated and admired his skills.
Glenn Campbell was a member of the ‘Wrecking Crew’. Those were the best of the best studio session players, performing on more hit songs then can be listed here.
Some people may have recently discovered Glenn, so he appears underrated to them, but in the music world, he is far from “underrated”.
@@sunndog5715 not underrated at all..
Glen Campbell is so criminally underrated as a guitar player and true artistic genius.
Other guitar players know how good he was.
Not underrated
@@dennisscott6501 Yes and no. I think people who truly followed him know, but I still don't think he got enough credit because he came across as so casual.
What in the world are you talking about?
Many "country" guitarists seem to not get ranked with the "best" guitarists in history. Glen, Roy, Vince, Keith, etc. ... and I'm a rock fan!
Appreciating a genuinely talented solo is one thing. Now knowing he performed that midway into his battle with Alzheimer's makes this even more remarkable.
This was from a CMA Awards in 2001 or 2003 so well before his Alzheimmer diagnosis although there are clips out there of him playing this sol later in the 00s that still had that wow factor.
Music was pretty well the last part of his mind to fail - it stayed with him right to the end because it was a part of him. A truly great musician.
Indeed it is
I totally forgot about that.
@@commonwombat9171 Alzheimer’s starts way before it shows up!
Another underrated part of this solo is the fact he's playing some technically challenging riffs and staying absolutely lock step with the band, all while live in concert!
Um, that's the job. It's what we do.
And singing on top of his Phenomenal picking Without missing a beat or making one mistake total perfection from the master! You ain’t kidding when you said underrated guitarist! RIP Mr. Campbell!
@@morbidmanmusicm-mo-m-m-mor-m-m-morbid m-m-music m-man!? One of the greatest music men of the late 20th century? You-you're supposed to be dead... 😟
Same with Jerry Reed.
And his voice is phenomenal - no auto-tune in those days!
When I was in my 20s I won a free ticket from a radio show contest to see Glen Campbell. At that time I hated him. If one of his songs was on the radio I'd change channel. But I was a starving student and would never pass up anything free ;-) So my friend and I went to his concert and it literally changed my life. I saw real musical talent and prowess for the first time. I was so inspired that I changed from being a bedroom strummer to a semi-professional musician and paid my way through university and beyond by playing music. Thanks, Glen Campbell! You made me about $50,000. And more importantly, you made me a very happy little musician.
John Williams Cool story bro
Right. That is inspiring.
Really heartwarming, John Williams. Thank you! Glen was one of THE Dudes.
In my youth as well I did not fully appreciate Glen's talent. Luckily I have lived long enough to understand what an incredible talent Glen was. RIP
Many many people have only been exposed to his crossover hits like "Rhinestone Cowboy" and have no idea of his phenomenal abilities as a musician, and songwriter, as seen in this video. I'm sure those hits made him tons of money, but in some ways they hid his true talent and may have cost him fans. I always try to get people to see past the pop stuff, and have changed a few minds successfully :-)
Today's "Country" stars aren't worthy to carry this man's boots!!
Amen, Sir!!!
Never heard that clean of playing.
Dolly, Shania, Ricky, Taylor, Miley, Billy Ray, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Vince, Alison Krauss, Alison Brown, Tim O'Brien, Dwight, Charlie Pride, Garth, Waylon, Merle Haggard? Don't get me wrong. I love Glen's music (and have done since I was a child), and I must admit a lot of the people I mentioned have been around for a while, but there are some wonderful country musicians out there still playing and singing with passion and expertise. In my opinion country (even including 'crossover') is the future. Much of what passes for modern rock, folk, etc is just a bunch of footnotes in music history.
Harley Grit 💯
Yeah , but they could still give 'em a good licking.
Glen Campbell, what a showman, nice guy, and absolute beast on the guitar. One of best ever, any genre.
Truly, Mr. Showman, to the letter, “P” Perfect in every way.
Glen Campbelll, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark - I think every guitarist of my generation respects the heck out of those guys no matter what genre they're into.
Glad you mentioned Jerry.. he never seems to get the props that he deserves :)
@@onefatstratcat Jerry invited a whole new picking style. You gotta love that guy.
Let’s not forget Chet Atkins as well.
every time I saw any of these guys on tv I paid attention and I grew up as a rocker -these guys could easily play in any genre -my rock heroes -not so much
Yeah, Chet Atkins...and throw in some Roy Buchanan as well. I don't hear anybody these days that can hang with them.
Keep in mind Glenn was a session musician with 'The Wrecking Crew' during the mid 60's before he became famous himself as a solo artist. His fantastic guitar work can be heard (unfortunately uncredited) on numerous hits from the 60's. It is no joke when he is considered as one of the best guitarist of all time!
He was on a Beach Boys album, and I think the Monkeys too.
@@SaintFredrocks - Also Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Ricky Nelson, Phil Spector, The Everly Brothers, Jan and Dean... even Elvis Presley! (many more too...)

Agreed with all of the above. If you are a fan of popular music history, please watch the documentary The Wrecking Crew. . I think few people really know about Glenn Campbell’s contribution to the music world as a member of The Wrecking Crew. It’s on CZcams, about one hour and 40 minutes.
I am a ROCKER but I really liked Glenn Campbell. One of my favorite songs by him was Wichita Lineman. Very soulful.
I really always liked Southern Nights. Fresh as a breeze not to mention the trees!
Wichita Lineman is my favorite of his hits. Written by the great Jimmy Webb who also wrote "Galveston", and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix".

Thank you Glen for being there for us Veterans in those dark years for so many of us. You gave us hope, your musical songs gave us reasons to live. Legendary guitarist.
Thank you for your service to our country.
About every 6 months I watch Glen perform and it blows me away how talented he was and you can tell he loves performing
I use to watch his live show too. How are you doing? Hope all is well with you there
He could do onstage what he wasn’t allowed to do in the studio - AKA shred it up. The dude was criminally underused on his own records, that’s how talented he was
Me too. I loved his singing, extreme guitar talents. I revisit them from time to time, one of the benefits of the internet.

Hi Patti, how are you doing?
I was a know-it-all audiophile in college in the 70's, mostly into prog rock, but I always appreciated Glen's songs. Then, my eyes were opened one night around 1978 when Glen was on some music award show, and George Benson joined him in a jam on one of George's songs. They joyfully traded licks and runs, and I never looked at Glen as just a country performer ever again. So many people (music lovers) have absolutely no concept of Glen's talents and his influence on the modern music industry.
I remember that , I had heard Glenn before and knew he could play, it my have been on HEE HAW with Roy Clark
Before he was well known he was a sought after session player. Recorded on Sinatra dates. He certainly had the chops.
@@iankr he was an integral part of The Wrecking Crew. Amazing how many pop hits those guys played on.
A master guitarist, arguably the greatest ever! Also a fantastic showman, good looking and cool as hell ! You don't know what you've got till it's gone.
I remember that .
When they asked Prince who the greatest guitarist of all time was, he said Glen Campbell
@Tye Bear They are probably playing with each other right now. . . . oh . . . well, I mean 'guitars'. I didn't mean . . . . . oh never mind then. : /
but when asked about chem trails...
He was in Thr Wrecking Crew ! Those cats was way on top !
Actually Glen Campbell's fave was and is the incredible Tommy Emmanuel. But in fairness when guys like Steve Vai/Satriani/Clapton say the same. What I always liked about Glen was a clean picking with out effects, great voice and showmanship. I hope those 2 are jamming now!!! Cheers.
@@__GALLANT__ Great comment, nicely done!
Glen Campbell and Steve Wariner…both incredibly underrated guitarists because of their success as singers. Glen is one of the fastest flat pickers I’ve ever heard…period. Wariner can play a blazing country solo and then turn around and play Chet as well as Chet. Legends in my book!
Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed are so under rated. Clean and precise guitar work.
Glen may be underrated by the general public, but among other musicians he was regarded as one of the best ever.
They’re both highly regarded by every musician as being fantastic talents

Glen Campbell was a genius on the guitar.
Anyone who still brings the world this amount of Joy will never truly be gone from us...I wish I could loop this song for 24 hrs straight.
I replay it a lot…
You can. I did that with the Byrds Mr. Tambourine Man. I spent years trying to copy Roger McGuinn on my 6 string Strat. I eventually came close. There is no copying Glen Campbell. I gave up.
I just started to learn music, (on guitar ) at 65 y/o. I remember my mom loved his good looks and friendly demeaner. I remember the tunes but just recognizing he was a guitar great .Way up there with the best!
I listen to the Western Stars album ( Springsteen) and it sounds like Glen was on it. Big fan of both...
People forget that he was a studio musician before he stepped out on his own. His music will live on forever.
It is not that people forget, they do not know it.
He was laughed at because he couldn't read music. He just had to hear it once, then could play it by ear.
The guy was from another planet. Truly astounding repertoire before he left.
Remember, Steve Wariner has long been regarded as one of the very best guitarists anywhere. When you see him smiling, looking over at Glen like he's saying, "I'm playing this with Glen Campbell!".....well, PRICELESS!!!
Might not know this but Glenn Campbell would jam with some of the best like Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, Warner, and some of rocks best. He was born to play and play he did like no other.
I was thinking the same thing ...... Seing Steve smile listening to Glenn play, you know that even the great Steve Wariner understood just how talented and special Glenn was as an entertainer and especially as a guitar player. @@hitop2365 😂 That is indeed an underrated skill as well. Roy Clark always looked like he was on the verge of a stroke. And it is painful for me to watch John Mayer or Stevie Ray Vaughn play if only because of their facial expressions.
Sorry, but there's nothing wrong with any of those things. There's a thousands of ways to make music and they're all good and work great in their own way -- if executed well. I highly doubt Campbell would've criticized any of that.
I was a teenager when Galveston and Wichita lineman came out and although I was mostly a R&R kid, I fell in love with Glen Campbell's music. I watched his tv show to see him plat guitar.
The most underrated guitar hero. RIP Glen
I think he was probably underrated because he was such a great singer. Glen Campbell.and Roy Clark inspired many of the hard rockers of the 80s and 90s.

Glen Campbell was the magistrate of guitar country at an age where country was so really kool.
What I notice about Glenn Campbell is that he always looks relaxed and in control, no matter how fast he is playing. Some guitarists are obviously working hard. Also his solos always build on the chord structure, they are not just random shredding.
look that guy "Red " up. Big guy who played with Merle. He has a lot of videos online now. Talk about no stress while playing..... he's pretty good.
That's cause he's drunk.
It is amazing how you can have the same electric guitar & a country guy like Glen will have a clearly " country feel" to the solo & the rock guy will have "rock feel" to their solo, using the same guitar
Most build out of chord structure, you have to, otherwise you lose melodic consonance with the song. Besides at the tail end of Glen's solo, that's all he doing is playing scales. Fast scales, but no real content. Random shredding otherwise. For all that, I love his playing. He's one of the best to ever pick up a guitar
He will always be the best, listen to "I won't remember you", you WILL cry
His bass player just smiling and shaking his head in admiration...
LOL That was Steve Wariner.
Glenn Campbell was an International Treasure! One of the greatest entertainers to ever perform on God's green earth! 🍃🕊

A few years ago he toured Europe despite having dementia and a guy I know who is a sound engineer helped set up gigs in Scotland with him and he said he could do it as long as he had the song list on a laptop in front of him.

most people know this but he had perfect pitch and started guitar at age five. on top of that his uncle was a studio guitarist who taught him everything he knew. hard to find a guitar player as good as Glen. He was always my guitar hero. and a damn good singer.
Glen was part of The Wrecking Crew in the 1960s. He was in great demand as a session musician back then and he played on some of the greatest pop songs of all time.
His solo career was literally a side job for him until it really exploded. There was very little money in music back then even adjusted for inflation unless you were a superstar which he became by 1970.
He got his start as a session musician and he was one of the best.
This solo reminds me of Louie Shelton; another L.A. studio great of the same era as Campbell. They probably knew each other from recording sessions.
I did not know about the perfect pitch. One of the things that impresses me is that if you listen to this same song played in Sioux Falls (it appears to be part of the same tour) the solo is totally different. Same thing with other songs played at different venues. My point is, I believe he is always improvising, not playing a rehearsed solo. In my opinion, the mark of a real guitarist.
I think Louie has some stuff on his site that suggest they did in fact work together.
Louie is a friend of mine here on the Gold Coast of Australia. Louie is the man.
It breaks my heart every time I watch one of these videos of Glenn playing before a massive audience. It's such a great loss.

One of the greatest guitar players of all time. Some of my best childhood memories were watching his TV show with my dad. And later on in life I took my dad to a GC concert and met him and he signed my guitar for me.
My dad's gone now but when I see a Glen Campbell video I think of my dad. My dad was the musician and I'm the guitar player. Inspired by Glen Campbell
I had the great opportunity to see Glen perform up close & live at an accomplishments award show he did for IBM/Boulder in May of 1983. My dept. was the feature dept. of the entire site & thus we were seated only about 15 feet or so from the stage. To see & hear him play his variety of guitars with a bit of banjo & the fiddle was absolutely magical, even for someone such as myself who was a stoned cold rock & roll disciple.
