In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm welcoming DJ Rae back to the channel for another fun reaction video where we listen to music from the Pat Metheny Group for the first time on the channel. This song, Minuano (Six Eight), is from their album Still Life (Talking), released in 1987. I very much enjoyed listening to Pat's sublime music! And, I'm really enjoying this dynamic where I'm new to the song but my guest knows it very well. I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for the "shout-out" to Lyle, Pat's equal partner in exquisite pastel. Have y'all here experienced his piece "Eberhard"? Although it was composed about a decade prior, it was the last thing he recorded before his unfortunate death in '20. I consider it a true masterpiece, on par with the incredible Minuano (Six Eight), thanks to @Doug.Helvering. It, together with several PMG selections and J.S. Bach's and a few others, moves me greatly (even though I've haven't the musical theory to comprehend it). Do listen if you haven't yet! 🙏🏼

Yes, but more than that. There are a number of PMG songs I find so moving I can’t get through without welling up. Every time. This is one. Unfortunately it’s a bit awkward enjoying it (them) with others around…particularly those who don’t (and…let’s face it…never will) share my appreciation. It instantly spoke to my soul and filled a void I didn’t know existed. It took a while for me to get to enjoying where the beat and melody drops in because I was floating on a cloud in that intro for days. Over and over in the fetal position on the floor. I discovered Pat Matheny while working in radio in Kansas back in 1980. Our station ran with a lot of tracks off 'American Garage' which was the first album of his I owned. Later, we hosted a concert of his at the historic Lawrence Opera House. He has made no bad records and his partnership with Lyle Mays is one of the greatest in music. Pat has amassed a large collection of Grammys over the years - one of the finest music products to come out of Kansas City.

Also, the "string pop" right before Pat's entrance was his signal to the recording engineer that he was about to start playing. He said during an interview that he normally edits it out, but he liked it on this particular song, and decided to leave it in.

I had a blast with your video. In my case I was fortunate to listen to Pat Metheny Lyle Mays and the band in the early 80's and got my hands on this record the moment it came out. You two did a perfect interpretation of what was to be expected among the one who knew (DJ Rae) and the one who didn´t (Doug). It was a delight to see Dougs face trying so hard to wrap his head thoughts and musical theory around a band that every musician I stumble across and hears it for the first time has his musical brain blown away! I was riding along there with you two seeing Rae's face of delight and Doug's more like musical "nausea", not knowing if the next measure was going to take hin down or up. I caught myself speaking to Doug on the computer just when it ended and saying out loud "Did you enjoy the Roller Coaster?" the moment you made a roller coster remark exactly, talk abpout connection. I knew Rae was enjoying seeing how you were getting "tossed around" musically. I even thought at one moment you should stop searching for the chord progressions and you just remarked that maybe it was better to just shut up and enjoy (hilarious). These guys can do this to ya, Talk about unconventionalism, this is a prime example. Nontheless, executed with taste and style undoubtedly not many bands can pull this stuff off with such perfection and elegance. For another treat I suggest Third Wind. For a more technical breakdown see Lyle Mays the Coimposer (Parts 1 and 2) by Ryan Slatko. There you just might find many answers to the obvious questions regarding two powerhouse composers complementing themselves musically for more than 30 years. RIP Lyle Mays...always within our musical hearts.
