    Nice tips for the foam ! Foam safe CA is also good, fast, but is far more expensive. The parts sourcing was great to hear about throughout the vid.

    Looks great sir. Good job, might I suggest using some small pieces of dowels as tabs on the inside and some small magnets for a cleaner seal of the body.

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 7 lety

      Thanks. I planning on using brass tubes on one side and brass rods on the other, for pin in pot. I hadn't considered wooden dowels though. I'll have to think about that. They might be better. Thanks for the idea. Small magnets wouldn't work since the head magnets and the magnets inside would be attracted to them. The fact that there small wouldn't matter since the field from the head and ball magnets are still strong.

      The thought crossed my mind, mostly because I couldn't find my coping saw. But the day before I planning on cutting it I just happened to run across another coping saw at a yard sale. So, I didn't get to make a foam cutter :(.

    dude awesome work just like the movie, also i had a bit of a random question to ask um so i made a crystal radio a week ago and it works but it works with no ground connection and when i take the tuning bar out of the circuit i hear the station better, like i said weird question and nothing to do with this video, but do you know why this happens

    Hot glue may have helped. If you make a mistake use acetone to remove/ unstick it. Also I've found that hot glue makes a great led defuser.

    Awesome!
    How did you spin the head?

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 7 lety +1

      The head is fixed relative to the drive system. When I rotate the drive system, the head rotates too. That also means that the head always points in the direction BB-8 will move. I don't have any good interior footage that demonstrates it but you can get some idea from here czcams.com/video/1gWBS70vphY/video.html. Just imagine a pole going up from there to the magnets that hold the head. When that rotates as you see in the video, the head rotates with it.

    If you have the time, I have a question. When I cut my ball in half it seemed a little flimsy and the edges didn’t meet back up perfectly (I think it’s partially due to the fraying of the paper mache layer of the ball). I worry this will make it harder to try and keep the ball together via tape. Did you encounter similar problems and/or do you have any suggestions as how to improve the mate between the halves of my ball?

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 4 lety

      My ball is made from a cardboard globe (it sounds like you made yours from paper mache) so I didn't have that problem. Initially I was using the globe as is and didn't have a problem. Then I covered it in three layers of fiberglass and so still don't have the problem. You can see both versions in this video here czcams.com/video/se4zfgIx9sA/video.html So you could consider covering yours in fiberglass too.

    Having a similar deformation problem with my ball. How long did you leave yours in that clamp device you made?

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 4 lety +1

      I didn't leave it in the clamp device at all. That was just a way of measuring the height of the ball in different positions. Pretty cool that you're making one. It's real rewarding when the fiberglass ball is finished and solid.

    • @tommy_j_jefferson2167
      @tommy_j_jefferson2167 Před 4 lety

      RimstarOrg ah ok, I misunderstood. And thanks! I’ve wanted to make one for a while and now I finally have the chance. Your videos have been a great help!
      Btw, do you think it’s alright if my ball isn’t perfectly round? A portion of my globe warped and no longer seems to be out far enough

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 4 lety +1

      If it's not perfectly round then there will be spots in it's movement when it will unexpectedly turn. You'll just have to compensate when you're controlling it. As you can see from when I measured it with that clamp setup, mine isn't perfectly round either but it still works reasonably well.

  • @Oinikis
    @Oinikis Před 7 lety

    this looks absolutelly amazing. One suggestion I have is overhauling electronics with Arduino. There are bluetooth boards, so you can have some stuff adjustable with a smartphone, and for long range communication you can use nRF24L01 (I use it in a RC plane). youtube channel Great Scott has recently uploaded a video about wireless energy transfer, so you could use that to power the head LED's from the main batteries. If you were to really commit to it, you could make a wireless charging power station for it and have the voltage displayed on the smartphone. Just some thoughts I have on making it cooler. Anyway, nicelly done, it looks absolutelly sick.

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 7 lety

      Thanks. The RC range is a little short and it would be nice to extend it. I have a feeling I'll be using bluetooth for the first time in future projects instead. I've a few more things to do to this one but it's time to move on. Regarding powering wirelessly through the head, that might be possible, as long as the weight can be kept down. The distance is probably more than 2 cm. Wireless charging for the main batteries wouldn't work though, it would take much too long. I'm glad you like it though.

    where is the video of yesterday about ground???

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 7 lety

      There was an error in it that too large to keep so I made it unlisted. I should have mentioned that the neutral and ground wires are connected at the main breaker panel and that that's the circuit the current goes through, instead of saying that it just goes to ground. I should have thought of that originally but with the way the video evolved during development I got it wrong. I'll fix the error, and add a few more things and upload it again. It'll take a week or two because I have to go somewhere to get some more video for it.
