I always think he was even better as defensive 6 infront of two center backs....he was perfect in that position.

What an amazing player he was!He had monstrous physique and was elegant,he could play as a defensive midfielder and as a centre back.He was the perfect replacement for rijkaard,only except that desailly wasnt as skilfull as rijkaard was.

I'm always surprised when people discuss the best CH in the English game that Desailly never gets a mention. It's always McGrath, Stam, Vidic, Ferdinand, Adams, Company and Terry. Surely Desailly was a better player than a couple of those? He was definitely more talented than John Terry and Tony Adams... 100%!!! I think people here in England make the mistake of saying their "favourite" rather than who was the better player!

I use Terry as an example, Terry never was nothing untill Ricardo Carvalho played side him.

Desailly is one of my favorite players of all time! Because he was mostly a defensive player, he was so underrated compared to attacking players of his generation who typically received all of the press coverage. However, if you need any evidence of how valued he was on the national team, my favorite statistic about Desailly was that during France's run and eventual victory in the 1998 World Cup Finals, he and Barthez (GK) were the only 2 players to play every single minute of every match... until he got the red card in the 68th minute of the championship match. But by then, France was up 2-0 and were able to close the match without him.
