Ram 2500 Rebel | An Off Roader that Tows?

- In this quick video, we discuss the features and benefits of the RAM 2500 Rebel. As tested around $95,000 this is probably a work write-off, however, if you need 16000lbs of towing capacity and the need to hit the trails RAM says this is it.

This will be an excellent vehicle for small suburban families to take to Walmart for modest grocery runs. You truly can't do it in anything smaller.
it's LITERALLY not possible.
@@sean7456 we hear the stories from our grandparents of how, prior to the 2000's, millions of families all over the United States would perish, as they lacked the most basic full-size crew cab long bed pickup trucks to take on their excursions from the frontier (i.e. subdivision) to the hunting grounds (grocery store). Many tried to make such trips in primitive technologies called "sedans" or "hatchbacks", but as those could only store six cases of water in the trunk, they would die of malnourishment. Once the perversion of "monster trucks as a family vehicle" caught on, mortality rates among suburbanites dropped. These days huge trucks slaughter a few thousand extra pedestrians every year, but that's a small price to pay for what they've given us.

The 2500 does not have the Aisin transmission. It only is available with the even more ancient 68RFE from Chrysler. The Aisin is only available with a 3500 when optioned with the high output Cummins. The 3500 also has the 68RFE when optioned with the standard output Cummins.
I was wondering about that when they panned the engine bay. I didn't see the Aisin's dipstick which is located on the drivers side of the engine, right next to the Master Cylinder reservoir That's the easiest way to know if it has an Aisin or not. The dipstick on the 68RFE is located on the passenger side of the engine.
Clean shot of the drivers side of the engine --- and no transmission dipstick.

Apparently not because everyone and their mother has a truck. For no reason of course.

@@SharkBoy87A lot of people buy trucks as a cultural/status symbol rather than fulfilling the specific need for a truck. For some folks it's subconscious assimilation, they're just doing what their peers do.
You said Asin transmission, isn't this the 68RFE? I have a 2500 Cummins and it's been good so far. Ford makes a lot more power but who wants a CP4 fuel pump after it's been such a disaster in the previous Ram's and Chevy's. Also, Ram was briefly available with a 50 gallon fuel tank which for the diesel makes close to 1000 mi highway range.

$91K for a Dodge truck. We really live in absurd times. I'm cross shopping this with a Mitsubishi Mirage. Which one will fit in each other's trunk or bed?
2 most popular cross shopped options. An almost impossible decision.
Unironically, with the money saved going with the compact hatchback for commuting and general driving (plus saving on gas and maintenance), you could pay for YEARS of renting trucks for moving large outdoor goods, RVs or vans for road trips and towing, or sports cars just for fun.
Plus, you'd actually be able to use a standard 2 car garage as a workspace or workout space AND car storage, since the car wouldn't take up the entire garage when parked inside.
That being said, I'm sure everyone who buys these is towing horse trailers and cement every day, which the Mirage can't do. So there's that.
My two favorite trucks, and I have owned almost every truck, have been a 1996 Toyota Tacoma V6 manual and a 2014 Ram 3500 Cummins. Both were definitely used for work but had very different work requirements. Now I don't need a truck but I would still love to drive a Cummins.
Would have liked a word about the Harman Kardon Sound system. How terrible is it?
Would love to see a cargo van shootout from you guys!
**Slaps roof**..."you can carry so much nothing as you drive around town in this thing, Karen!"
You can reach the roof? That monstrosity is six stories high!
Sweet truck! Would kill to have that diesel in the power wagon! Please FCA!!!!
That setup makes zero sense. Diesels don't go in off-road trucks. You need a gas engine. This rebel is a really stupid truck. Just get the powerwagon with the hemi if you want an off roader or a 3500 Cummins if you want a diesel. End of story.
Edit: not to mention the significantly reduced payload due to the Cummins in a 2500. A 2500 should NEVER be equipped with a Cummins due to that factor. You can actually tow more with a hemi 2500 than a Cummins 2500 due to the reduced payload from the Cummins. If you want a Cummins than you want a 3500.
@@username8644 The Rebel makes no sense with the Cummins. The Rebel with a 6.4 can tow almost 17k with a payload of 3k. I purchased one as I pull dump trailers that can be near that weight occasionally, and routinely 8k+ and needing to pull to dumps. This truck with the Cummins is just a look at me truck, that takes away the niche it's useful for. With the softer suspension the Cummins in this truck has something along the lines of a 1700 pound payload.
Hell yeah, brother!!!!!
FWIW, you mentioned the towing capacity a few times but for consumers that are going to be towing, all the other specs are just as important, if not more important. For my HD truck use, payload rating is far more important than a typically misleading tow rating. $5k is on its way, I don't want to see Jack suffering.
but this is yet another off road trim and one that is directly aimed at Ford's Tremor and the GM AT4X /Chev ZR2 HD. those have towing capacity that's 15 to 18k lbs. payload is limited on all 4 of those trucks vs their stock brothers, if payload is your biggest concern then look at the non off road versions of the 4 trucks.
Thanks for phoning this one in for us.
I loved the 300 and Magnum
My fully loaded Xterra Pro-4X was $32K out the door in October 2015. Bulletproof, has been off-road many times, and been through blizzards and Las Vegas summers. How can this be three times the cost?
@The Yiz and the Yatz How so? 4L na V6 4WD hi/lo & locking rear diff, body on frame. Not sure how that's a chick car
It's probably 2x the size, 2.5x the towing, 2.5x the payload, more luxurious. Also, that was 8 years ago and pre-covid
The xterra is a small suv and that was eight years ago.
Can’t wait to buy this and explain i actually take this thing offroad (probably once in its lifetime) and not just trips to costco.
On location shooting interior, back at home the Bendpak is having cold sweats.
As far as I recall, Rebel does not come with Power Wagon's 2" lift, so it sits a little lower.
it's 1 inch lower due to the Cummins.
Powerwagon is the better truck in every use case.
@@username8644 that's simply not true. payload and towing are both reduced in the PW, so as a truck.. the Rebel beats it. regardless both are offroad trims of the standard 2500 which beats both of them for what a traditional truck would be used for.
@@c.h.9827 The rebel hemi sure, not the rebel Cummins though. Any Cummins 2500 has a significantly lower payload and because of it actually tows less in the real world than a hemi 2500 since the trailer will pull down the rear end too much due to the reduced payload from the Cummins. So no matter what trim of 2500, never get a Cummins. If you want a diesel get a 3500, end of story. Now as for hemi rebel versus power wagon, the power wagon is the real off road truck, the rebel is a off road poser truck. Sure it can tow a bit more but it's not a real off roader at all. So at the end of the day just either buy a regular hemi 2500 to tow with or a 3500 Cummins, or a power wagon if you wanna off road.
@@username8644 wow that's a lot of BS lol. the PW has a payload of 1560. the Rebel has a payload of 3140. the hitch weight is also higher in a Cummins equipped truck, but hey don't let facts get in the way of your argument lol.
Didn't see a payload rating for this rig. Did I miss it? Most people who tow with any truck will max out payload long before the tow rating.
Looking into a Ram 2500 for towing my camper, my 1500 is struggling. Big Horn is all I’m shelling out for when I have to pay for 15mpg too
I have a 21 Ram 2500 and average somewhere around 19 litres/100 kms on 87. I think that translates to about 12mpg. 15 would be a good day. :-)
Just get a 2500 hemi. Should tow it easily.
Edit: otherwise you'll want a 3500 if you want to go with the Cummins but that's a significantly more expensive truck if you want a diesel. Also it's a significantly worse daily driver. A hemi 2500 can be daily driven pretty easily and it's actually comfortable and surprisingly quick.
@username8644 after much debating I'm ordering the updated silverado 3500 gas model. Dollar for dollar way more features than the ram, both are good trucks
@@Tool0GT92 Good move, Chevys new stuff looks pretty good now, especially their updated interiors. Diesels just aren't worth it for most of us too.
This is not a car. It’s a work truck that can tow and go off road. You may see me driving mine to the grocery store or the mall, but you won’t be there when I’m hauling 8000 lbs of hay up a steep muddy road or hauling a 10,000 lbs horse trailer with 4,000 lbs of horses across a snow covered pasture. If you want smooth, buy an SUV. If you actually need a truck for work, you’ll love this Rebel. And, if you do want to buy one just to drive around town in, I don’t blame you because it’s one great looking truck.
Any plans to release a cx90 review?
"That's not moon. That's a space station!"
Didn’t show the payload. My guess is it’s 1700-1800 lbs with that diesel on a Rebel 2500 (I believe the GVWR is still 10000). I have a 2021 2500 Big Horn with 6.4 and few options and 2800lbs payload. That diesel drops that payload some 600+ lbs from what I recall…all the other stuff on the Rebel will drop it more. 15,000 lbs might be tough to tow just based on in likely being overloaded.
A Cummins 2500 makes no sense since the payload is dropped so significantly you actually can't tow as much as with the hemi since the weight of the trailer will make your rear end sag too much. The rated towing capacity is a BS number. You can actually tow more with a hemi 2500 than a Cummins 2500. If you want an off road truck the powerwagon is a significantly better option, and it'll tow the same as this rebel. If you actually want to tow than get a 3500.
Such a useful car! I'm sure 99% of them won't be used for getting 1 guy to an office job.
That just isn't how most trucks are used in the US, I'm sure of it.
I actually doubt most of these will be, as someone who used 2500 and 3500 trucks, the compromises you make to drive this versus a normal 1500 are huge as is the cost of maintenance and cost of operation. I agree with 100% with you on 1500s though.
US office work tends to need heavy duty personal transportation, though, so it kinda makes sense.

You have a lot of haters commenting on this truck. Either they’re extremely jealous that they can’t afford one, ( I have two), or they have no idea why people buy trucks. You may need a truck for any number of reasons, and since trucks are so luxurious these days, it can be used for work and used to get groceries or go out to eat. I see the haters all the time. They’re the ones driving a Prius with lumber sticking out of the window on the way back from Home Depot, or the ones with a mattress strapped on top of the car. They’re the ones that look stupid.
When are you doing the F-150 Hybrid?
I bought a ProMaster with the 3.6 thinking the popularity of that engine makes servicing easier; I was disappointed when a Ram dealer diagnosed a new cylinder head and several weeks' wait when all it needed was a new coil. A private shop was better at diagnosis than the "experts."

I believe you need to drill down a little deeper on the towing capacity. I suspect that 16k figure is for a stripped down gasser, not this truck. The problem is payload, a single rear wheel truck is not going to have much left when loaded with the weight of a diesel engine and all of that $91k in optional equipment. Just the tongue weight alone will likely push this trucks limits, and that means no passengers, fuel, or gear. The dually is the way to go for true heavy towing, assuming you want to be safe and legal.
The diesel is a hair under 15k for towing and a hair under 2k for payload
Basically take out a thousand pounds for both numbers compared to the hemi
