    This was awesome. As a designer, my main takeaway is that it's not about the tools, it's about the client. I personally HATE powerpoint, but now I'll be becoming an expert at it. Bottom line is, when you open a Keynote, or open a Powerpoint, you're met with a blank page at 4:3 or 16:9. Get over it. Tell a story. Change the world.

    This is amazing, we have a huge Presentations team at work, and this is going to be a must-watch for them. I personally wouldn't ever want to work in a presentations department, perhaps ideation/top-level or storyboard but not the nitty gritty Powerpoint usage. Never been a fan of Microsofts UX.

    I really enjoyed this show.
    Show is a key word.
    When some asks me if if can send them my ‘show’ I say no. Send me a plane ticket I’ll present.
    Slide shows/decks are not presentations.

  • @gwachberg
    @gwachberg Pƙed 6 lety +5

    i have been doing power point presentations and prezis for executives for many years. my take is: the tool is not the story. you can engage an audience with simple powerpoint, if you take time to tweak animations and transitions you can go beyond normal slide-thinking.
    but in the end it is all about the story. you need to find a theme that is the best voice for the specific project. then take this theme and use it throughout the slide deck, just be careful to not become annoying. the best story i eve did was for a presentation on MIFID, which is about financial regulation, the most boring topic on earth. but we changed the tone of the whole thing by declaring MIFID as a group of super heroes saving the economy. all of a sudden the slides were filled with capes and marvel heroes, accompanied by some textual references. the audience, which had expected usual boredom, were thrilled.
    you cannot pull that off every time, but it illustrates how the idea is bigger than the tool.

    I just finished a project that went from illustrator into powerpoint. I am still learning PP so this is video coincides with my education. The project was a digital menu board to be displayed on a TV screen in front of a kiosk serving food. I think that PP has a lot of potential for this kind of digital sign display. Thanks again for the great content.

    On my creative career journey I’ve recently found myself as a presentation designer. It’s been interesting so far considering I’ve worked with PowerPoint and designed for PowerPoint for many years but not actually been in a role where I’m specifically designing for PowerPoint full time. It’s not the most difficulty design work I’ve ever done but it’s consistently in demand and it’s not difficult to impress your client. I just need to get to that 6 digit salary and I’ll be fine

      I have worked for several IT companies; What I can tell you is, they looooove their novel-esque type of PPT. They really want to cram everything in just one slide. I, as their Lead/Brand Designer gets sidelined when I try to make it more organized. I remember one of Chris Do's video "Why pay someone you're not listening to?" :(

    • @rockstarkate78
      @rockstarkate78 Pƙed 6 lety +1

    • @radiantDF
      @radiantDF Pƙed 6 lety

      Thanks for the response :) Great tips BTW. My original response got lost when I restarted my mac. Couple of questions:
      a) What did you do (and feel) when they've changed your design (even if you have followed and observed the branding and design principles) and messed it up?
      b) How do you "educate" those people (who mess up your presentation) and make them listen to you? (It's quite difficult if you're an offshore and sole designer)
      Thanks!

    • @rockstarkate78
      @rockstarkate78 Pƙed 6 lety +3

      In my opinion, if the client is happy and they got what they wanted, I did my job. It's primarily customer service. Just like this video says, it's not for you. So if they don't follow my suggestions and they want something else, even if I disagree, I will explain why, but I will do what they want in the end. I think of it like if you worked at a restaurant, you might be able to make suggestions for the best dish and what drink would go with it, but in the end if the customer wants a hot dog and a diet coke, and that's what makes them happy, that's what they should get. As long as they still pay :)

    Great content! For those of us who are in-house designers who are working with flow charts, engineering process diagrams, etc, that software engineers are building (and being put on PPTs), what is the right way to handle that? Obviously we can't go fullblown creative and we need to include the charts. What is the best way to present that info cleanly to other engineer-minded execs or managers who we present to? What's the right balance between cool conceptual, typography/image-oriented pieces like you/Ashley do, but also presenting the info that's needed? Thanks a lot and appreciate this a lot. Where can we donate directly to you and your team Chris?

    LOL I love you chris, but you need to stop flirting with every female guest, it's cringy man.

      cringy? are you against the art of charm? if i throw a compliment to our guests, men or women, you find that to be a problem? when Hugh Barton came on the show and I remarked about his immaculately groomed eyebrows, you found that to be a problem? i dunno.
      if you watch most tv show hosts, you'll see that they do whatever to make their guests feel at ease in front of the camera. i don't think i'm saying anything inappropriate.
      i'm a happily married man with 2 lovely children. hope that helps.

      Yo! I don't mean to come across as a hater. I love the show. It's just an observation. I'm sure it's more natural for tv hosts to be charming with guests in the same room, but the split screen just makes things awkward. Again, I'm sorry If I offended you it's just an observation. PS. I need to work on my sugar-coating cuz I always come across as an asshole
