@@whitehawkomega doesn't seem bad at all. Note you can get Thoughtseize or if you have uncommons you can use the bad inquisition of k.
@@whitehawkomega makes sense. I just mean from his list uk.
if you can deal with the life loss, infernal grasp is so good. power word kill misses so many relevant targets that i stopped playing it in standard
It’s probably a budget issue - the deck is already $100. For upgrades though, Seth definitely missed that in his wrap-up.
@@sunutopia I don't think the budget's the issue, given that infernal grasp is an uncommon from innistrad. There's no way that it can be that much more expensive than power word: kill.
@@sunutopia that could be possible, over at mtg goldfish they list infernal grasp at a dollar but power word kill at 30 cents, but how closely that mimics reality, i don't know.
for tier pioneer decks power word works pretty well. No real angel/demon/devil/dragons that you're worried about. The velamocus deck is the only one running around that I can think of.
@@triopsate3 The deck is already over $100 now, since the aim is to keep it under $100, I do think budget is the issue. Maybe if the cost of the deck at time of building was $98, or even $99, but if it’s already at the $100 mark, he can’t really go over that. And considering Seth marks the price of the deck at time of recording in the video (see top left of start and wrap-up), it was probably $100 at time of recording.
mono U spirit main here. and just a few things to point out as you learn the format and decks
first: always kill the spirit BEFORE the curious obsession resolves on it if they only have one mana up, its often normal to just hope your opponent doesnt have the instant speed removal game one and go for it, but letting it resolve opens up geistlight snare for 1 mana when you did try and kill it later, which is a card they run 4 of compared to only 2 spell pierce, making the removal 3x as likely to have been countered the way you played it, you werent punished for it, but it was a major blunder.
second: the spirit deck lives for 1 for 1s, duress is a very bad board in, answer the creatures, dont try and duress counters or obsessions from their hand, youre opening yourself up to dead draws later in the game when you just want to rip removal or threats as often as possible and draw test them, your rakdos midrange in pioneer and historic both tend to board out as many discard as possible to try and win the matchup even.
third: mystic subdual is good because of flash, its why its the card of choice, you cant answer a winota (and more recently velomachus) with witness protection so just off that its not worth swapping for.
Yeah. Another 5 - 0 close call.
We are *STILL* waiting for our 1st Perfect League in _Budget Magic_ for 2022.
Soon, MtG. Soon.....
"and now we potentially have the card draw engine in castle locthwain."
5 seconds later, doesn't use it on ops end step
Hi! I came to comment that yesterday I won a local tournament of pioneer with a monoblack zombies deck based around this one with some teaks (cards I did not own). This very video was my gateway into paper pioneer. Thanks a lot for the content
Game 1 of the last match, I would've killed Kalitas and swung out, Champion at face everything else at Chandra. Yeah you'll lose a couple creatures to zombie blocks, but you'll get rid of Chandra. Glorybringer was exerted, so you had a turn to draw another removal spell, but Kalitas was wrecking your day now.
Seth has the best musical taste of any MTG uploader.
Been playing this since champion of the perished dropped, but I play diregraf colossus on 3 as well. overstuffs the 3 slot but beats so much face in and wins gridier games with the token generation
Diregraf Colossus does sound sweet!
What do you remove?
@@ricardoalmaraz6881 I wasn't playing as much removal (which may have been wrong), particularly murderous rider felt too slow for my gameplan, and I'm not playing lazotep reaver. A few other cards are 3s or 2s, I ended up shifting to almost a turbo aggro style of deck using dread wanderer and diregraf ghoul to explode the board faster and pump champion of the parish. I'm also playing wight, it tends to trade on 3 power and leave a body behind.
I feel like you can do a deck upgrade and make it G/B and run Coco in this
Ohh, CoCo does sound sweet in the deck. I might have to give that a try.
Thank yof Seth for the video. I absolutely love budget decks in action (Pioneer, Modern). Best category imho.
Love to see more pioneer content
You know, it just occurred to me that Fable of the Mirror-Breaker is actually a Shaman...
I wonder if it would do fun things in a Shaman deck, or is it too slow?
It's in your head, in your head. Zombie, zombie zombie ay oh
I'm a big fan of the thumbnail art. Huge shout out to the artist(s).
In case anyone wanted to see AspiringSpike 's side of the match from this video: czcams.com/video/sbYtFvC_86A/video.html
Thank you for linking it!
big fan of 4 mana liliana, as it can grab a late gary to win the game, or just flood the board. Aside from that, 1x graf reaver, and 3x gary as a curve topper. For slightly higher budget, cut lord of the accursed for diregraf colossus, and cut lazotep reaver for relentless dead (probably the best 2 drop zombie). This deck is also historic legal, with undead augur as an insane draw engine.
I feel like going the mono-swamps route (aside from Castle) was a mistake. I get that you have good 1-drops and explosive starts if all your lands are untapped. But Hagra Mauling is extra removal when you need it (and you NEEDED it in the last matchup). Malakir Rebirth would've been hilarious in response to them killing Headless Rider. I'd drop 4 swamps for a 2/2 mix of those.
I look forwards to seeing the aspiring spike game from the other side of the table
It was on his CFB video that he posted a few days ago
czcams.com/video/sbYtFvC_86A/video.html
In case you wanted a link with a time stamp, this is Spike's video with Seth's match: czcams.com/video/sbYtFvC_86A/video.html
Had to rewind on that BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK?! 🤣🤣🤣
Think you can build a Vivien on the hunt pioneer deck when it available?
Would a Coffers deck that wants to dump a ton of mana into Torment kd Hailfire, be a good deck idea?
What am I missing... Wouldn't Crippling Fear be way better than Witches Vengeance
and infernal grasp looks like an upgrade over heartless act or power word kill to me. maybe it's a budget consideration.
Crippling Fear costs 4 mana. Witch's Vengeance costs 3. That's not a trivial difference.
Is worth using Crippling Fear instead of Witch Vengeance?
CGB posted a Standard mono-black zombies video right after this. Did Halloween come early?
How many Hive of the Eye Tyrants and Mutavaults would you add? A full playset each?
Love ya Seth, by far the best modern/pioneer content creator out there
Isn't a witches vengeance but for all creature types instead of the one you choose? Seems better for a tribal deck
I have two edh zombie decks, kinda like cookie cutter when it comes to tribes but still fun. Love the content, keep it up!
I need to play more Commander Zombies. I've played them in basically every other format, but I don't know if I've ever played them in Commander.
you're missing out Seth, you can build them in many different ways too, reanimator zombies, combo zombies, go wide with lords zombies
I have seen this deck so much in my MTGO leagues and they were free wins against mono green stompy.
yeah it also auto loses vs lotus field combo
Always happy to see some Explorer content!
I don't get why winota is an insta lose? Can anyone explain
13:10 Wait … wouldn’t Necromentia be an insta-win against any Winota deck on the play?
Cool deck! Is there is expensive version of this deck?
Damn zoidberg singing in pantomime 😵
High praise for the Ninja opponent. Seth hardly ever comments on his opponents’ skill. :o
It was aspiring spike after all.
You think diregraf colossus could be a good addition to this deck? Maybe as a 2 of. I remember it being an all-star in standard when mono-black zombos was a deck
I've been building on this deck since champion of the perished was spoiled, can confirm it's an all star. Moved it up to 3, kinda want it at 4. when it's early/on 3 you go so wide on turn 4 with just a couple bodies. when it's late/after 4 it's a 4/4+ for 3 with upside.
I think the build that ditches the lords for Colossus & more Grey Merchant and Cemetery Desecrator is better. Draws more cards, less vulnerable and match up spread is better IMO. I say this as a diehard fan of fish who loves playing lords lol.
Yeah, there's actually a lot of potential ways to build Zombies in Pioneer/Explorer, which is pretty sweet. A bigger build without Lords, Necroduality Zombies Liliana Zombies. The possibilities are endless!
Am I the only one that remembers project x? Safi plus crypt champion for infinite etb triggers?
Rotten Reunion is the secret tech that holds the room together
Oh, first game vs reanimator, if only you had a rotten Reunion
best song ever
I would play infernal grasp over power word kill tbh.
Thank God Winota got the ban hammer
Is Lantern of the Lost just a budget choice for being decent to graveyard hate over the other more typical hate pieces? Or is there something else going on there?
What other typical mass GY hate pieces are there besides leyline that's only good if it's in your opener and RIP that's in white
I like witch's vengeance but I think we can afford to use crippling fear in this deck. What do y'all think?
Crippling fear is strictly better in this deck I think
@@lucasbreton4143 it's definitely a choice, that one mana diffence isn't nothing. As far as I've seen, while humans is a great tribe in all formats, there aren't enough tribes played to justify wv
I can't wait for pioneer to be fully added on Arena
With no changes, that deck can be played in historic.
Oh I just meant for contentwise. Love this channel and the decks they put out but would rather watch arena content than mtgo
In an emergency you can use 1 heartless act to remove the counters and the other to destroy the creature. You had 2 in hand after all.
But not enough mana
@@blakewilliams8148 Seth had 3 mana at the end of his opponent's turn, he could remove the counter then, because the opponent didn't have the combo anyways yet, and then, during his own turn, Seth could have used the second Heartless Act to destroy the creature.
@@ODIRGO I'm saying if the opponent has velomachus combo being able to kill it on your next turn is irrelevant
I think Seth forgot Winota only triggers on non-humans
Take a shot every time SaffronOlive says Winota
Not sure why power word over grasp, that card is the truth
Is temur energy competitive or jank for pioneer?
I got a buddy playing it, it's jank but like, if you hit an emrakul on 4 it still just wins the game 94% of the time.
@@MrZeplon it’s a super big Timmy spin to win card but it’s one of my favorites in the last few years so I was gonna try and make it work for MTGA explorer just don’t want to waste to wildcards if it’s dogwater
Why not Crippling Fear in the sideboard? it feels better than Witch's Vengeance tbh.
3 v 4 mana
What about relentless dead
The Kaldheim tribal -3/-3 wraith seems like a slam dunk against the Winona deck.
3 mana for Witch's Vengeance vs 4 mana for Crippling Fear might be too much
@@Dementia55372 Yeah, but witch's is lucky to kill 2 things in the match up, cheaper ST removal seems better. The 4 mana wraith kills literally every pre-winota card in their deck so you don't have to always keep up removal for winota
@@joshuakruger4851 If you're on the draw or you stumble on lands you don't get to cast Crippling Fear before they Winota you. Seems like a pretty big drawback to me vs just getting to cast a 2-for-1
Can't believe this deck doesn't run Bitterbl- I mean, Dreadhorde Invasion :)
Looks like the only zombie token that could get big enough to use would be the Army token. Deck can't pump the other tokens enough to get that high
To me Is Crazy how many cards banned in modern are available in Pioneer , deathrite, treasure Cruise, dig through time etc . Despite not having fetches the Power level of those cards Is still way too High.
Why isn't the 2cmc kill spell for 2 life in the deck
Budget I'd guess, Seth normally keeps non-Legacy budget maxed at $100.
Does this deck can be play on Explorer Format ??
The only card not currently on Arena seems to be Dark Salvation, so it should be pretty easy to adapt.
it's pretty close I think
Have you been smoking cigars or something Seth? Lol
Deathtouch useless if your creature are bigger than creature opponent.
Surprised there’s no mutavault in this deck
1 copy of Mutavault would be 15% of this deck's price.
I’m mostly a paper player so after writing it I figured that was the reason. I completely missed budget in the title lol
We’ve played a lot of pioneer and modern lately hope we go back to standard and historic soon
Don't worry, with New Capenna coming out this week we'll have a lot of Standard over the next few weeks (not sure about Historic though, with Explorer coming out I'll probably play that instead for the most part).
@@MTGGoldfish not sure I’ve heard of explorer. Can’t wait to see more standard videos but more importantly I hope you do the content you want to do. Hope I didn’t sound too pushy earlier. If you’re enjoying making the content that’s all that matters to us
Yay, pioneer.
The kids are eating today
Game 1 I feel there was a misplay not removing Power Word Kill, as that can't hit dragons. EDIT: Guess I should have guess watching, ha. Seems to have worked out.
Lol, yeah, I think that was a punt, although it ended up paying off somehow.
Korvold also dodges power word kill and if you aren't careful dodges heartless act
Deathtouch is easy to block menace intimidate is harderto block
Yes ban winotta.
Does Naya Winota being a pile of "just good threats" does that make it the closest Pioneer deck to Boomer Jund in Modern (specifically when Jund was really good)?
EDIT: Seth said this about Rakdos in round 5. Never mind haha.
No one land keeps
Orange
anything can 5-0. It's just more likely with a stronger deck.
These intros make me so grateful for the tap to fast forward feature
Ban winota, no reason for it to be so safe and so powerful. It doesn't have to attack and the creatures coming in are indestructible. What other 4 drop in magic can pull that much power without having to actually do anything
Pioneer is a fun format in theory but winota kills every other creature deck in the format fullstop. So forced into combo v combo v slow combo v control
I didn’t realize how bonkers winota is. I don’t play pioneer so I’m out of the loop but holy crap she seems ripe for banning.
3rd
Nah this is just some generic old school slow aggro tribal deck with 3 mana lords.
Zombies are defined as the [1 mana 2 power creature with some kind of (irrelevant) drawback] tribe since the early days (Sarcomancy, Carnophage).
Zombies have resilience to removal and/or recursion (flavor win) like Gravecrawler and Dread Wanderer (Like SRSLY, Wanderer is legal in Pioneer and a 2$ foil and you don't play it?!).
Zombies deal damage equal to the number of zombies in play (flavor win) with Gempalm Polluter (legal in Historic) or Shepherd of Rot.
This deck on the other hand has nothing.
Sure thing grandpa. If you ignore the zombie creature type on these cards. You clown.
NO GARY!!!????
Winota needs to be banned. Card is so boring and so swingy. You either kill it or you immediately die. Card's broken.
First lol
$100...Budget....not everyone here gets that sweet utube monies !
There's a 50$ version on the link that makes some compromises to bring the price down further (which is also mentioned in the wrap up of the video).
Also, budget is pretty relative, and is really meant to be a place that is a lower, but semi-common price point (for the Magic community at large) to be playable. There's another version in the article above that takes the deck to ~325$ when not compromising.
You don't have to use with "best in class", and there are plenty of cards that I'm sure I'll never own due to their pricing.
Why were you so upset about fading Winota @25:30 and on? Your opponent almost never had a non-Human to even attack with for a trigger. Neither innkeeper or brutal cathar count
Inkeeper is a halfling, not a human
I hope the other side of this shows up in an @AspiringSpike video! :D
czcams.com/video/sbYtFvC_86A/video.html
In case no one linked you yet, czcams.com/video/sbYtFvC_86A/video.html it uploaded last week :)
Watching after the best of budget decks video. Glad to see Winota gone from the format. Mono green is kind of the boogeyman now but it's easier to play against than WINota.
