    • @GumLong
      @GumLong Před rokem +16

      @@ianshevlin8675 The source we're talking about is Urabrask, not the Invasion's backside. The question was whether the Invasion's backside's effect would boost damage coming from Urabrask, which it doesn't because damage coming from Urabrask comes from a creature and is thus not a noncreature source. Unintuitive, because usually effects that are meant to work for burn say noncombat instead of noncreature.
      And transformed permanents can absolutely change card type on the battlefield. Effects that interact with battles to my knowledge would no longer interact with a battle that has flipped to a creature, while effects targeting creatures do.

    I think the challenge with Urabrask in a burn deck is that you don't really have that many other creatures that MUST be removed, so Opponent almost always has a removal spell ready to go. If all your creatures were must-kills, then maybe Urabrask could live.

    • @MTGGoldfish
      @MTGGoldfish  Před rokem +60

      @T1_True_Bob Před rokem +6

      I agree.
      I think another thing to consider is the comparison between Urabrask and Hazoret. Both were 4 CMC red creatures that were tried in burn, both had great upside. But two important differences were that a) hazoret had haste, so could potentially put the damage down ASAP, where Urabrask had to either untap, or be deployed in a position where you had flooded out like nobody's business. and b), Hazoret had indestructible, protecting it from a lot of removal, which (as you say) is being saved for the boss monster.
      the 4 CMC spot in burn is hard because you have to give it to cards that end the game immediately. Urabrask is good, but it doesn't do that.

    Awesome video, Seth! However, I gotta say that I just can't see Urabrask working in a monored burn shell. It's just too big of a threat to be left alone, and this type of deck just can't protect it effectively: as we've seen, most of the time it will be "play it, wait for opponent to kill it ASAP, lose a turn and possibly momentum".
    However, a part of me thinks that it could actually work in an Izzet Spells deck, with a bunch of cheap cantrips and burn spells to flip it, and some counters to keep it alive.

    Cool thing about invasion of regatha is that you basically don't lose that much dmg to flip it. You deal 5 to it instead of face but it makes up for it by dealing 4 upfront. Yeah you don't get any other advantage from it but when you flip it it rewards you with a big body and and more damage for future burn spells which make up the 1 dmg you lost by attacking the battle.

    I think Urabrask would make a fine one-of in the deck just as a closer against some life gain deck. You need the body and extra damage, plus he'll recur all of your spells. We can flip him the turn he comes out with a conservative 9 mana on the board. Maybe that's an indication that Chandra should be in a deck with Urabrask? Being able to make that extra mana or see the extra card could make the difference between Urabrask doing fun stuff or Urabrask being a 4/4 with first strike. I know the idea with this deck was probably to be budget, but with some extra cash or wilds (or cards you have lying around) a big burn deck might be possible in standard... mostly because of the Invasion of Regatha, but maybe Urabrask too!

    If you wanted to cut Urabrask for budget reasons, the 2 mana prowess dwarf with ward seems like a great addition. I also just think the dwarf is gonna be better in this shell since cards that are really good value spells are usually a trap in burn style red decks. It may have legs in the red deck that's currently seeing play where it has burn spells but it's mostly a creature deck where whatever has the best body for stats is what is wanted. Could also be a solid sideboard card if there are any decks that pop up that are more durdly or in colors with weaker removal spells. A big part of why Invasion of Regatha was that good here is that this is one of the best decks for flipping battles at instant speed. So while you never untapped with a Urabrask, you were able to get the flipped Regatha in just the right moment - opponent's end step or even mid-combat. Realistically, in Burn specifically, a 4 mana creature that doesn't do anything the turn it comes down is never going to be playable. You don't play enough creatures to bait removal before it drops because you're playing battles and burn spells with a large chunk of your mana, so they are pretty likely to have some leftover for it, and it means doing nothing on turn 4, which is when you otherwise want to be closing the game out with a double spell turn, or at least getting close to it to put them in range of a single top deck.

    It's really funny when the video recaps the story behind its title. Poor Urabrask.

    I would replace urabrasks with Defiler of instinct, that way you ping for an extra 1 damage to any target.

    Urabrask is a key card in this deck. It eats removal, so opponent cant remove Diciples of Inferno

    At 13:48 wouldn't the right line be battle +bolt to take down the 4/4? That way you don't have to chump with your random 1 drop you played inefficiently?

  • @rhettk6263
    @rhettk6263 Před rokem +1

    Solphem tho?
    I would have thought double damage would be good
    Even the new convoke fiery emancipation
    (Maybe building this not as a budget deck)

  • @Linky609
    @Linky609 Před rokem

    4 is definitely the top of the curve for burn and if you've got early aggro type hands playing urabrask late just doesn't have much impact.

  • @driscollja
    @driscollja Před rokem

    Urabrask might be better in an Izzet spells deck with free/duplicate spell abilities. Would love to see it with mercurial spelldancer and arcane proxy. Maybe with Chandra dressed to kill for the extra red or extra card access to help the trigger. Double red and double blue spells don’t seem too bad with the current mama base.

    • @MTGGoldfish
      @MTGGoldfish  Před rokem +2

      The most impressive plan I've seen so far is someone using the red battle that exiles your hand and gives you a new one and lets you play the exiled cards the next turn. Seemed like a sweet way to have enough fuel to actually flip Urabrask.

    • @driscollja
      @driscollja Před rokem

      Blazing Crescendo would add pressure and card options here, too. I do love playing blazing Crescendo before you drop a land and pulling both a land and a cheap spell into exile just when your card count looks low.

    I feel like urabrask is too clunky to run in mono red. Getting it out on rate means it is immediately gonna eat removal. It may be better maybe in an izzet or jeskai shell to protect it?

  • @Crusina

  • @dementievatz
    @dementievatz Před rokem

    The reason lava axe is bad is the rate, not the damage going to face. 3 mana for 4 burn with a bit of extra upside is a card that can see play in Standard when the right cards are around it. 5 mana for 5 burn of literal Lava Axe is a lot worse.

  • @grey5641
    @grey5641 Před rokem +1

    This isn't really a urabrask deck tbh, its just that the critical mass of burn in standard right now is high enough that you can have a dead card in hand (urabrask) and still win via burn

    • @scienceguy1165
      @scienceguy1165 Před rokem

      For sure. I spent all my wildcards on a Jodah deck, so budget decks like this are great for me. I can just throw in solphim and flamebreathers for the urabrasks, and this'll be great.

  • @EnigmaticTwister
    @EnigmaticTwister Před rokem

    Looking at the list and some of the other comments, I agree that urabrask should probably be cut. I've seen people mention bloodfeather pheonix, which I think I'd play in place of Urabrask just for the occasional recursion on a burn spell. Obviously other cards like Kessig Flamebreather are also good choices.
