The Chrysler PT Cruiser is America’s most hated, retro styled, uber-utilitarian car that also sold millions of units. With roots in the Dodge Viper and Plymouth Prowler, the PT Cruiser had a surprisingly advanced development that involved virtual reality and later featured some of the craziest models. Everything from a limited edition Brian Setzer SEMA car to Chrysler’s own PT Cruiser Turbo GT. If you thought the PT Cruiser was dumb, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

I always loved the PT Cruiser, even if its been driven by my granny, its still looks cool today with so many boring cars on the road. For some strange reason they were cool at the begining of the 2000`s and sudenly there was a big backlash at the end (for no especific reason).
No. It doesn't look cool today. It's never looked good. It was a horrible car as well.
The back lash was because the cars were unreliable and extremely cheaply made. Look it up.
I've always had a soft spot for them because of my grandpa. A few years ago I had to borrow one of the two that he owns, and it just so happened to be turbocharged. My college classmates and I had a blast with that thing. PTs have the body roll of 80s sedan and the acceleration of a go cart. They may may not be the most reliable, but damn are they under-rated.
Nah that thing looks like ass. Makes VW Bug and Chevy SSR look incredible in comparison
@@MOONSpellsDoom Unreliable is an understatement. They're more like dumpsters on wheels. I owned one for a little over a year, and that thing had to have about a repair or two a month while I owned it. You have no idea how happy I was to junk that thing...

“Could’ve had a V8” I’ve been WAITING for someone to use that reference!
I died laughing
Ulgy as this that thing was a V8 would have been a waste
I know people say it should have had a V8, but the V6 that it came with made more power than the V8s Chrysler had at the time and came without the weight penalty.
@@NecromancerGarage You aren't taking into account that North Americans are indoctrinated to think that V8 is the only way to go. Don't get me wrong, they're great, but you need the right tool for the right job, and many people forget that as they zone out listening to the thunder of a N.A. V8 roaring as it blasts over roads.... usually in a suburban street so some goon can show off to their fellow goons. They live high on displacement until the price of gas goes up again, as it always does, then they remember that smaller engines can have turbos and soon the cycle starts over.

I own what is my 3rd PT! Yes, it is second gen and yes very different! The turn radius is way better though the interior is smaller and not as nice. My mother has a first gen so I drive both and am very aware of the differences. I don't know what their original target market was, however I was 45 when I bought my 1st and looked a long time to find a low mileage PT. Found a base model continued to look until I found my Sunset Boulevard street series with only 60k to be my last PT (I am 57 now). Said like 4 people ever.
Lerroyy Gannkinss I always kinda-sorta wanted to build a GT Cruiser sleeper, like with quiet exhaust and stock-ish ride height and wheels. The GT's engine was ostensibly the same as the SRT-4's, so they can make like 500 hp. It'd be kinda fun.
True
I have entered the chat, make that 5 people. 🤙🏻
My GT Cruiser 5 speed was pretty sick. Miss that car but every GT Cruiser ive had was huge junk. 5 speed GT are rare AF.
WᴏʀʟᴅsSᴍᴀʟʟᴇsᴛVɪᴏʟɪɴ I had one for a little while. It was genuinely pretty quick, and would actually kinda handle, too. I didn't know the stickshifts were rare, I figured a lot of people probably ordered them that way. I wanted to kinda build a sleeper hot rod out of it, but I was about 20 and poor and I didn't exactly start with a brand new one (I bought it with 120,000 on it), so instead I ran it into the ground and moved on to the next kinda fun cheap-ish beater (a Probe GT).

I had a PT Cruiser back in 2012. It was a high school grad gift. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED that car. In my opinion it's a good first car for anyone. It had amazing gas mileage as it only costed me about $30 to fully fill up the tank for gas. It was compact like a car but had the space of a mid-size SUV on the inside. Parked in small spots but great for grocery shopping as the back had a rear hatch and the rear seats could go down for extra space. For a 4-cylinder it drove good on the roads but I felt like it needed a 6-cylinder because it worked too hard uphills where the motor would scream and in Washington state, we have big hills. 6 cylinder cars help in hilly environments but it got the job done. Sadly they aren't built well for crashes because when I got rear ended it was about $4000-6000 worth of damage and we had to total the car out. I miss that car to this day. Not one complaint about it on my days of driving it. Honestly I loved the old hot rod style as many modern cars today all have a similar style making the PT Cruiser stand out more in today's era
5:23 That concept looks a lot way better than what we ended up getting, both the exterior and interior.
I disagree
James: “Nobody asked for this”
Me: “nobody asked for the pt cruiser”
It was actually highly anticipated. My step dad, and many others, payed extra to get one of the first ones. Shit I want to say he payed $25k hahahaha. Worked out for me because I bought his 98 Accord LX manual for a song....like $7,500 for a 2 year old Accord. LOL- adjust for inflation he paid like $37k! I got the Accord for about $11k adjusted.
@@blurglide no offense but it was anticipated by people who hate themselves, who have no sense of self appreciation
@@lockettlv No man. That's the revisionist interpretation. I was finishing up engineering school at the time and this was considered a very innovative car. "Stylish" (one of the first "retro" cars) but practical (could hold an 8' ladder if I recall). It wasn't until people actually spent a few years driving and maintaining them that they became hated. I was actually excited when my step dad got his; then I drove it and was underwhelmed.
Being 8 years old I very much enjoyed the styling and still do, it was the rest of the car that sucked.

They were charged something like 2 hours when the battery died . From what I understand in later years they relocated the battery to the trunk area like a European car .

God I love you guys. You show the L-bodies, the K-cars, and now the PT Cruiser. My dad has an all black PT GT with a stage 1 tune and ran 14.5! Thankfully they used the SRT4 engine so you can get pretty fast runs with them. 3 inch exhaust, Intercooler, CAI, and a stage 3 tune would probably scare a lot of people here. Now a video on the Shelby Dakota! It was the first Dakota to get a V8 unlike any truck in it's class. I own one and they're pretty special.
My dad had a silver PT show car with purple color shift flames back in the day. My favorite car we had in the family. :) We ACTUALLY cruised with it and listened to surf music with the PT Cruiser Club. Being a kid then was cool even if the cars were dorky. Ours was lowered, had factory chrome alloy 5 spoke(anodized center cap) rims, K&N cold air, and chrome taillights. It wasn’t fancy or fast but it was cool for a giant Dodge Neon!
