This is a huge £130 turbo that we bought from Amazon! Why? We wanted to see if a REALLY cheap turbo kit actually gains you more power! How much work does it take, how much does it cost and, more importantly, how much power we can make.
And it got a little out of hand! Since we found out you can get a turbo for only £130 on Amazon, we HAD to get one. But there was one question - what do we fit it to?
Well, we own a PT cruiser SPECIFICALLY to test Amazon car mods on. Only we had one issue - almost NOBODY has done this before.

I think this is the safest car build I've ever seen. You can have all the bangs, flames and giggles but you're not even past the speed limit.

@@rixyz7013 there pt was weak why? should be 150bhp to start remove cat n easier air flow in + out is +8 - +16 bhp more b4 turbo. my2Door/2005 PT CruiserVan all motor2.4 & has more bhp & torque th that particular one shown on dyno both b4 & after they added a turbo☆JoeDog☆
they're PT was poorly to begin way down on its rated power

Here in the US, the base PT Cruiser came equipped with the 2.4L, 150hp engine. I had no clue there were even worse versions released around the world. :/
150hp at the crank plus 15 years of driving equals about 119 at the wheels. Factory ratings are always at the crank.

US *always* gets bigger engines and more power
Europe tends to get smaller engines because of emissions standards but also due to our fuel prices historically being way more than the us because of high tax on our fuel so fuel efficiency is a higher priority
@@sbrader97 In the $1500 road trip video, I was surprised by the gas prices on the Shell sign. I was like "Wow 2.03/gallon is super cheap.". Then I realized it was per liter. :/ We pay under $3.00/gallon for regular.

Just remember everyone there is a reason MaxPeedingRods super budget turbo has a tiny exhaust side and a huge cold side, turbo lag saves projects like this! Low down torque with an smaller turbo would send those rods bouncing down the road

True! But more low down torque also means more risk to some nifty explosions considering the low quality parts of this car.

They literally make a pt cruiser with a turbo, it has the neon srt4 engine and they low key haul
Just buy used turbo version with 200HP ...
i once bought a 130$ turbo from amazon for my 2001 vw tdi. that 130$ turbo lasted more kms than the original. 225000km on the original and 245000km on the 130$ turbo. the dealership quote was 1300$

The problem (well, one of the many,) with the PT Cruiser is that they designed it on computer for minimal clearances, to the point that that they actually had to stop production a few months in, just to practice assembly. Prior to that, they were turning out only about 1/4 as many per day as they had planned.
This channel is unreal like uk donut without the cheese
I've been running a GT45 turbo on my 5.3 for over 2 years now, it makes 14.5 pounds of boost by the end of first gear, holds 14-15 psi through second and third, which makes about 700hp reliably. It made even more boost before I put a bigger wastegate, hitting 18-19 psi easily, I don't feel comfortable running that much boost but that turbo will definitely supply it. It works great, I'll probably just put another amazon one on if it ever goes out.
Wow, what an epic effort. I felt so bad for everyone that put in all that work. In the U.S. we have two versions of the PT Cruiser Turbo (a 180hp and a 220hp). I couldn't help but wonder if you could not have imported one of the stock turbo drivetrains, it might have been easier than fitting that turbo kit to the smaller engine. Great job overall!

I feel like most other turbo on stock car mods usually need to upgrade the fuel pump, and injectors in order to get an AFR that works with the increased boost. Would that have helped here?
This was great, BUT... it really needed footage of the install by Richard. Guy did a magnificent job, it looks absurdly brilliant and would've loved to see him go through the process of cutting bonnet holes and custom piping and exhaust, etc. Hilarious little PT-R 🤣

At the Dyno, 2:50, why are they measuring engine torque in newton-meter, but the wheel torque in pounds-feet? Whichever unit you might use, surely you'd want to use the same unit consistently?

They made these with turbo. The pt cruiser gt. Not a world first. I remember selling these when they came out, and test driving the turbo model when we first got em on the lot to compare the difference in feel. Started In 03 or 04, had something around 200hp.
Same drivetrain from the srt neon, detuned a bit. I was hoping someone would bring it up so I didn't have to.
As an Australian, I highly recommend blocking off the blow off valve and adding in a dose pipe.

i had a clio 197 and im 6ft4 and fit in it really well. a surprising amount of room in the newer clios compared to the older shape

I’d try that on a car where the turbo is sitting there top front of engine. B5 s4 the turbs are an engine out job. Sadly I couldn’t risk needing to swap them out again.

They don't mention it, but I hope they moved to higher octane fuel for the turbo. If they didn't then they should consider it as it will allow them to run more boost without fear of detonation.
@Mr Smith The UK uses a different rating system for octane numbers, so 87 US octane is about 91 octane in Europe and the UK.

well to be fair the turbo pt makes 220 at the crank so probably close to 190whp so there really only around 20hp off.
20 years go ii had a 420a eagle talon which is same motor as the non turbo py cruiser i made 180whp at just 5 psi using ebay turbokit no tune as it was a FMU setup,then i went up to 9 psi and finally broke ring land after a few years of abuse.
they never say what boost level hes running and the fact hes only making 170whp tuned does not seem right unless hes running really low boost just to be safe,btw these 420a engines weakest link are the ring lands and they are extremely fragile and prone to breaking under detonation

Out of curiosity why do you use dollar when in Britain?
I have purchased 2 turbos from Amazon, both for about $125. One of them I ran 20psi through for about 20K miles then swapped for a bigger turbo I got basically free. Rebuilt that with an ebay kit I paid $20 for. Currently running 25psi+ on that and about 25K miles. The other turbo I bought I haven't been able to install yet. But the goal is 30+psi.
Nothing wrong with a cheap turbo, just don't expect it to last 200K miles. But at 1/10 the price of a high end name brand, does it really matter?

@@makssy9949 I can buy 10+ turbos for the same price as 1 Precision or Borg Warner. So what if the cheap one only makes it 10K miles... Plus I put over 20K on a $100 turbo and it's still mint. Only took it off to go bigger.

I own this turbo got it off their actual website, with the proper supporting mods it makes power. I have a 99 accord 2.3l doubled my crank hp to the wheels. 157 crank to 302whp

I did make around 350whp from 1.8l engine with that turbo.
So for that cheap it did worth it.

I SO wish I’d heard of TRS performance sooner when I started my mx5 1.8 supercharger conversion. I couldn’t find anyone but one tuner willing to to take my money to tune it and even then it was utterly hopeless 😢
My neighbor had a twin turbo pt cruiser. It was the same motor that came in the srt4. It had a tiny turbo to spool the big srt4 turbo.
Peter at TRS remapped my Focus ST. He did an amazing job, I'd highly recommend TRS
my 1984 mustang gt 2.3L turbo is running an amazon turbo and its been doing just fine for 6 years now, nothing wrong with a cheap turbo if you get the right ones, sometimes there are brands out there that really are good and cheap.

I love the cheap boost prospect and projects and have considered doing the same to my peasant C5 Corvette Z06. Huron makes one of the best kits but it's quality indicates a likewise price.

The trick with that will be to drive it while keeping the engine in the boost range. The nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, _BOOST!_ characteristic they mentioned reminded me of the old 500cc Grand Prix bikes. They always had to ride those 2 strokes in that narrow rev range where they made all the power, and dropping out & coming back up into it was a recipe for a highside.
