WoW! SKIATHOS 2017 - LOW Landings and JETBLASTS

- Skiathos, which is better known as "the european St. Martin" is probably one of the most famous airports in Europe when it comes to planespotting. Planes up to the size of a Boeing 757 are flying extremly low over a road at the end of the runway and numerous aviation enthusiasts show up every day to watch the airplanes arrive and depart on the short runway at Skiathos Airport.
All clips in this video were filmed in June 2017 and I sumed up the best 10 minutes of this years Skiathos trip. I had to go through raw material with a length of 4 hours. This was probably the most time - consuming video project this year.
I filmed some of these clips with a selfie stick which enables an unusal and higher angle. It was connected with a go pro camera.
Most planes which arrive at Skiathos are tourist charters and especially UK holiday charter companies like Thomas Cook and Tui Uk are frequent visitors on the small island. It` s always a highlight when the Boeing 757-200 shows up on the ILS and lands on runway 02 at Skiathos.

Great job! Very similar to SXM, have to add Skiathos to my bucket list. Shame SXM blaster got killed the other day. Sure they will put a stop to that.

This is incredible! This is a bonus for us as we love plane watching and didn't realise the public road was so close to the runway. We will make a note of the lading times before we go. Can't wait to catch some of this with the new GoPro kit! Thanks for the video, it's amazing quality.

I have stood there myself. Awesome place. When I was there though, there was only about three other people. In some of these clips there are dozens experiencing the spectacle.
The runway is so short at Skiathos that only specially trained captains are allowed to land and take off. Boeing 757s are the biggest planes able to take off from this diddy ickle runway, because of their relatively large engines for their airframe. Although they cannot take off fully fuelled and have to land at Thessaloniki to top up. We were on a Thomson 757 and it didn't spare the horses on take off, I can tell yer! With our backs forced back into our seats, it was by far the most 'urgent' take off I have ever experienced.

Yes, they can, but most of the time they are not allowed to do that because they would suck all kind of stuff into the turbine, on the runway that is not that much of a problem.
It is more commonly done in the military, look for example at videos of the Saab JA 37 Viggen
Yes these jets can all do that. At the Vancouver Airport on a very snowy icy day I was trying to push back a large jet from the gate and all 4 wheels just spun on the ice. I told the Captain and he said put it in neutral with brakes off. He used the reverse thrusters to back out of the gate. I was completely blind from the blowing snow and I was blown away by what had just happened. The captain said push back complete, brakes on. We disconnected and I went back to gate thinking how calm and professional that Captain was.

The point of view seems to high to be a simple selfie stick. A selfie stick keeped so high should also be shaken a lot. When I saw this video for the first time I supposed it was a drone because I know the place and there are not so high places where to place a camera (of course). Yes, he should be arrested if this is true.
Flight Video & Photo he said it was a selfie stick in the description, it is possible they were on top of his car, but what we do know is that the GoPro they used has a wide angle lense which would make it seem higher than it was
I use a GoPro and it has a similar fisheye distorsion when you set it at extra wide angle (for example stop the video on a frame where you can see the guardrail that is strait in real but curved in the image). So this is realistic in my opinion. I guess the GoPro was installed on a gimbal to obtain so stable videos because a sw stabilizer cannot do a so good job and it is impossible to get so stable image with a selfie stick on your hand. This is my opinion because I was not there.

Great video, but got a little mistake in the description: there is no ILS in Skiathos, only a VOR approach!

I think low is what landing means.
Just as i've said about St. Martin. Are people nuts they realize they could get SERIOUSLY injured standing that close. The should build a wall there or something. The jet blast is enough to move a car so think about what it could do to you...!!!
some ppl might get some kind of kick from it, maybe they enjoy it...who knows?
it would decrease the population alot and when i mean alot... I mean ALOT
I personally believe that adult should make their own decisions and feel free whatever the danger to them if that what they do wish ....saying that, apart from St Maartin a little while back - out of the hundreds of thousand who go to watch the odds are heavily against them getting hurt - MUCH MORE risk cycling into work each day :)
