i have a great respect for those pilots
you can really see the tough decision making process in trying to avoid a sudden gust, a wing or tail strike, and an overly hard touch down.
Some of these pilots badly endangered their airplane. Air Berlin in particular, those landing decisions were UNACCEPTABLE.
cjad100 The first one was amazing. The one where the airberlin ballooned I would've gone around.
That was probably "just another day at the office" for that pilot. Funchal pilots deal with these crazy winds like most pilots deal with a 5kt wind.
Just be careful when opening the overhead bins as items would _most likely_ have shifted ...possibly onto the floor!
This is not everyday flying for pilots. Those updrafts and downdrafts are not normal... the difference between the hot runway and cool sea probably caused them. Wind was probably not a problem for the pilots. But the uncertainty if a updraft/downdraft would be more concerning
I often hear that people get even more scared of flying when they are watching these videos... I find it rather comforting, because it shows that the pilots are dealing absolutely professionally with those situations and know exactly what to do

that's only true if they had no fuel to reach another airport, otherwise this landing could be even be the reason for the pilot's licence revocation since the conditions are not right for landing, any little mistake and this could be a tragedy.

Hi ! Thanks for the video. I am the captain of the second Transavia on the video and it is very exiting to see the landing from outside.
It was an extreme day, with quite smooth approach and severe turbulence over the runway due to down and updrafts.
Thanks again
Didier
Really cool that you got to this video. Nice landing despite conditions. :)
Awesome job, man. My uncle flyes for Emirates, he was captain on UAE856, 1 plane behind the UEA521 on Dubai DXB yesterday. Love aviation!
Awesome!
Big balls, even if you've got probably the easiest of the lot. Does it seems more difficult/dangerous from the outside or from behind the cloche? When you encounter those severe weather, does the responsibility of carrying passengers, weight-in on the stress of the situation? Nice landing, btw!
Many planes are very slow on final. The landings which aren't too bad (wihout bouncing) put enough extra speed
into the calculation. A fantastic job.
The specs for the landing gear's are very hard and now I see why this isn't a joke.
I dosn't like to crash with 7-9 m/s (wich may be the allowed max.) into the ground and prefer smouth landings (without any need for inspection of the structural integrity afterwards).
I'd seen some people take the final direct against the wind-direction and turn the plane after touchdown
(up to 80° of the landing strip). I'd never seen it with airliners.
Cross wind landing is quite normal procedure. We don’t like “Gust”. And plz remember Go-around-pilots are not less skillful. Our goal is safety. That’s all.
tbh who would say go-around-pilots are less skillful? Being a pilot itself, carrying passengers alone is quite skillful already.
Down in one! If you can't get it right the first time you need to go back to piilot school. It's safer just to drop and hope for the best, anyway.
@@465marko Yeah man better to risk to lives of all the passengers instead of trying to get it right

the first pilot did a damn good job fighting that sudden crosswind!

British Airways also like "We'll just come back later."
Otto Beintema TAP not air Portugal and most of them do land they know like no one the islands TAP and SATA
Sure. . Take one video as an example for the whole year round... As someone that works on the island all year and depends on these planes to land I can tell that if anyone lands are TAP and SATA... Guess what both Portuguese. When u try to check where the German and English planes are, guess what... Diverted back to Lisbon or the other island - Porto santo.... So sure, air Berlin and British airways are the pros here. Note that I do not agree landing on such windy conditions.

Crazy how these planes can still land with heavy turbulence. Pilots are amazing!
First time I ever flew in an aeroplane and my visit was to Madeira. Back then, the airport had an incredibly short runway and it put me off flying for years. Eventually managed to overcome my fear of flying. Now I pretty much love it.
The first landing was a real nailbiter... Hats off to all the pilots who can land under such conditions -- their performance is really the pinnacle of human excellence. That said, I was most impressed by the skills of the Transavia pilots.
Whats scary is a crosswind landing in the day time, but in the dark is even worse...

Nothing can be more beautiful than seeing these air giants taking off or landing !!
Great flying. Passengers never know what it takes to fly into some of these weird fields.

some brainiacs constructed that airport just at a wind corridor
lenny108 no other Place possible
The problem is that the island is almost vertical, so you will have the same problem all over the island when the wind comes from the wrong direction. There has not been a crash there for more than 40 years and I have no worries when I commute to Madeira for work.
better than sidewinds, aren't they?
lenny108 its the only place on the island they can build it as it os a very rocku island with steep cliffs all around
You could have build it on other places on the island, as the runway is standing on 180 giant concrete stilts. But the result would have been the same, as the island is vertical pretty much everywhere. There is no flat terrain at all on Madeira, except on the top of the island, but that area is covered in clouds most of the year. I just landed at the airport 4 hours ago, by the way. Smooth and easy landing today.

@@tonyhussey3610 those nasty hills, the just sneak around at the moment you have built your airport... it's a mess!
Whoa. "Expect severe turbulence on final". I've never heard that in an ATIS. "Severe turbulence" by definition is signified by momentary loss of control of the airplane and large deviations in pitch, roll and altitude. Definitely not something you want on short final.
