Lars is so respectful and polite in his older age. Absolute professional.
his business side had always been there imo, now he's just more seasoned.
M's commercial success have everything to do with him, Bernstein etc on the $/marketing etc side.. how many bands from the early 1980s still enjoy the type of success they enjoyed.. in a way the current music almost didn't matter since their old catalogue was so fkin epic strong
Love that talk around the 1:01:30 mark where he says "You may like Master of Puppets more than ReLoad, and I totally respect that, but for us, we made both albums with the same level of enthusiasm and commitment"
But it's almost certainly not true.
@@_Stroda You know them better than they know themselves, sure buddy.
I'm sure lulu was made with a ton of enthusiasm too
Lars is such a great guy. Really.
not back in the 80s he wasn't
@@terrymiller8597 I mean they built their careers in the 80’s off of fucking with other people and bands, even their own bassist
@@terrymiller8597 Who cares what he was like 40 years ago? Judge him by what he is now and if he's grown as a person.
egofuck
not really
It's true, my Grandmother was the one that got me my first guitar.
Grandma's are the best!
This is one of the best interviews with Lars that I’ve seen. He is often glib, and I’ve often thought some of that was just his general arrogance. But part of me always thought that behind it all - and behind the music - was a group of guys who really cared about the music and the fans. Short interviews don’t give you time to explain, and some longer interviews are just garbage. This guy led Lars well, and the audience questions were actually good ones. This actually clarifies a lot of things people have condemned Metallica for through the years, and I thought it was outstanding.
Rick Kelley I completely agree
I think some of these guys (previously when they were younger) resented interviews as they were forced to do them. You see them when they've done the 30th interview that they never really wanted to do, being asked the same questions over and over. And some of the interviewers show their lack of research and respect for their time etc. When you're frustrated it shows. That and age; people's egos tend to mellow as they age and realize they're Gods after all.
It really proves the shallow minds of the supposed "fans" that follow all the crap.
Lars is a straight up guy, and it it was him and Hetfield that made all this happen.
Just shut up!!!
It still blows my mind how it was possible to write that amazing music at that young age. It's just insane.
I can listen to Lars all day, lol
haha same
same
:-) you need a hole Day - he talks a lot :-)
This interview has shifted my negative attitude towards Lars. I typically saw him as stand-offish, arrogant and elitist because of comments that I’d heard him say in various interviews. He handled this very long interview with class and dignity, and humility. I can’t imagine what he’s dealt with as a member of what is clearly one of the most impactful and important groups in the history of modern music. Metallica is among a very short list of artists whose influence will remain relevant for decades to come. They’re like the Beatles of Heavy Metal. Millions and millions of people have been influenced by their music, with millions more to come. I know my opinion isn’t worth a nickel, but I respect him for expressing gratitude and for being so humble, and for sharing the history of Metallica in such detail. I’ll leave my negative attitude regarding Lars in the closet at home from here on out. It doesn’t fit anymore. 👍
Box it up and send it to Dave.
All along the issue wasn't Lars it was you. Glad ypu recognised it. Now just need to get the other millions to do it haha

@@dubya85 Amen to that. I stand guilty as charged. Thanks for the kind words of praise, eh?! I should know better than to cast stones before I’ve walked a mile in another’s skin. Lesson learned. 👍
@@PhantomFilmAustralia I admit with all due humility that the point of this comment just hit me, lol!! To borrow a phrase from one of America’s most poignant fictional characters, “I’m not a smart man…”. Two points for you. 😁👍
Great interview, Lars is very intelligent and eloquent.
Excellent interview! Lars has fascinating things to say about the music business and Metallica.
M lñ, . N nxm mdmlswwdlw m lf m
1:20:46 Best Part IMO
Indeed
Possibly his best ever statement. Great interview overall.
Nirvana bassist said same thing too
Lars is intelligent and well spoken. It is great that finally he gets to tell his side of the Napster story. I think looking back that it is unfair that so many including myself were misled unto thinking thier comments on Napster were about greed or money, it makes me feel bad that I ever thought that and we all should have known better. Metallica was and is still today just like all of the fans. Humble guys just being themselves, sincere and doing what they love and not bending to the times. Total respect to all of them and thier team.
Lars is a true encyclopaedia of MetallicA who just happens to be in the band. Such an integral part of the band on so many levels
I fucking LOVE Lars Ulrich. I fucking love all the members past/present of Metallica. I embrace, and will forever embrace every fucking thing they decide to do or not do. I fucking Love Metallica with all of my fucking heart and soul. That’s it. ✌🏻❤️🤘🏻
cool story
I couldn't fucking agree on that fucking fact fucking more! :D
I could listen to Lars talk all day. My favorite drummer from my favorite band. Metallica for my life. \m/
Love to see how humble Lars and especially James have become in there older days. Very chill and mellow. Great interview.
Luke Hands it’s their not there. And no mention of Mustaine yet again.
I think with Dave its better not to say anything because seems like dave and Metallica are like a loser boyfriend or girlfriend wishing for some attention and when gets some starts to talk about getting together again...
I love Mustaine but somehow I found still some bitterness and neediness for his lifework (megadeth which is awesome btw) for the fact that Metallica got so big so fast and Dave never matched them on numbers etc.
I wish Dave found his peace because his fans and metal world loves his music and his virtuoso playing and songwriting❤️
@@thedadyouneverhadchannel3544 But he did actually mention Megadeth twice in the interview.
Great interview
No matter what people say. Lars in great guy. I like him as a drummer. From managing perspective he is awesome. And that drive he have had all his life is facinating. Still playing songs like Fight fire with fire etc., ...Just awesome.
Lars has incredible memory.
1emiraga wow yeah true
Yeah except the name MUSTAINE.
Most of its incorrect.. He certainly wasn’t writing songs on the first record that claim is laughable and historically inaccurate.
Great bullshitter
D U T C H No he didn’t.. Dave was the key guitar writer.
Lars did then what he does now.. Dictate.. The Lars you see in 2003s Some Kind of Monster is 20 years of him doing that.
Lars could barely play drums at the time they started.. James wasn’t playing guitar.. Dave was the sole guitarist.. He got James to take up both singing and guitar and taught him a number of his techniques (spider chord ect). James was largely just writing lyrics.. Lars was acting like a producer.. That’s how they ended up with the riff in the middle of The Four Horsemen... Lars wanted something slow and simple.. Dave produced the little riff you hear there to.. He has admitted that it was actually a slowed down version of the main riff from Sweet Home Alabama. 🤣😂 Lars liked it he didn’t care to tell him... Plus it was in Daves eye at the time a cynical move to mock his suggestion so he played a pop rock riff 🤣😂🤣😂
Dave Mustaines audiobook is on CZcams.. It’s about 8 hours long.. You should give it a listen.. He will let you in on what early Metallica was.
I was supposed to go to a movie but I got hooked on this interview and cancelled my ticket. Totally worth it! 🤘🏻
1:13:52 Please bring Metallica to the Faroe Islands. The Scorpions have actually played here and they are still around so it should be safe =)
I don’t give a shit what anyone says Lars just seems like a guy that doesn’t bullshit.
His comments on the "me too" thing was so prophetic and wise.
1:20:50 "We didn't go to the f****in mainstream, the mainstream came to us!" 👌🏼👌🏼
I'm proud of the deep appreciation that continues to be had for this band.
thank u 4 everything and dedication jave
Actually Lars does not put his underwear on like the rest of us everyday. He does it from inside a beautiful mansion before getting into his beautiful car with his wonderful family. He has worked hard. He deserves it in my opinion.
Great interview.
Great interview, love hearing from Lars 🤘🤘
I have a whole new respect for this Man. Thank You Lars, you are a good man, and an amazing Rock Icon.
I love the relationship he has with his Dad.
Great!!
love metallica
He's older, wiser, well thought, and he's also a quarter of Metallica. I would love to hear the good stories of his life as Metallicas drummer in his eliquent speaking
Very interesting interview indeed and I agree Lars is a cool and great dude
Hes says it's about dynamics. It was absolutely Magical... I was 13 when kill en all was released and a teen when they rode the lightning. Great times
So mature and wise from one of the biggest rockstars. I guess theyre genuine appearance keeps fans also coming to shows. No bs❤️
PS. The balls on this
When I STARTED Metallica...😅
I thought there was this James in The deal too or was Lars Solo ARTIST first
great interview, so interesting
...and this is a great interview!
Great interview 🤘🏼
Class act Lars.. God bless
Lars Ulrich aparte de ser un gran tipo ,lo encuentro tremendamente simpático
THank you Lars and Mike!
I first heard MOP at Kids Mountain skatepark in Altoona, PA in or around 1989
That was awesome!
YES! The Pushead "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" t-shirt is my absolute favorite! I still have my original, holes, burns, stains and all. I've got it framed on my "me" wall...only because it doesn't fit anymore. But I do have 3 more. 2 in my current size and one, one size bigger, you know... Just in case!
This video made me like and respect him a lot more.
Exelente comentario señor Lars Ulrich , ahun que me cuenta algo entender no lo hago nada de mal
102:20 A lone man shouts his approval for St Anger. The fans are out there, and our numbers are growing. That is the Metallica album that everyone will be hailing as a masterpiece in 3 years’ time.
Why do they always skip Load, ReLoad, garage inc and s&m?. They went from the black album days to the napster fiasco.... Come on, the load days are way more interesting.
Nordi Mejia you’re high lay off the pipe those albums are boring.
Yeah I was hoping they would go into Load.
Wise to forget those
Because those albums were ass lol
@@bloodandguts88 if you really listen to load and re-load and imagine that these albums were not written by metallica but by guns'n'roses for example, then those would be g'n'r heaviest sounding albums.
As a dane and as a huge metal fan, I am so proud that Lars is part of the greatest metal band ever. I just love that after 37 years or so living in the states, he still has a heavy danish accent... A lot of people might not like him and find him arrogant, but he sure is talented in a lot of ways 🤟🤟🤟
There are many "Genres" of music with many awesome artists & bands through the DECADES. But then there are 4 I'll say are among their own "GENRE" SRV, METALLICA, RUSH, TOOL.
This is the best interview ive ever seen from Ulrich.....

Genious.
14:19 "you can't see me" LOL
Cool guy been a hardcore metallica fan for most of my life wish I could meet him
This is a very interesting interview. What makes it good is that he's not talking to a music journalist so it's not stock responses.
My name is Mike Hogan and saw this and got excited, lol for real.
'With Federer?' The interviewer asking if Lars was with Federer at the Bollettieri academy in 1981. Federer was born in 1981 🤣🤣🤣
You are a beast Lars!
I'm a bit late to the party, but fuck this is such a great interview. Could listen to Lars allday
Prince charming is one of my favorite metallica songs. 😂
Fun fact....I bought tickets to see Metallica in 1984 they were playing with the rods and exciter...unfortunately it was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales for Manchester apollo
I'm so so very very glad Lars became a drumming icon and not a tennis player whew he dodged that ball 😮💨🎾
Lars is an honest man!.
Say what you will about Lars, a lot of people bad mouth Lars, he's chatty he's a media hound, I don't think he is. I've always seen him as determined, driven, bright, quick, witty and a foundational figure in what has developed into this metal scene today. When I was a kid a teenager Metallica was a very cool, aggressive, heavy, underground band kinda like Iron Maiden a few years before and they felt like you were in on a cool secret, only metal purest were hip to Metallica and they became very large without radio or MTV until And Justice for All which they got a lot of grief for leaning more commercial but that's growth, that's expanding your musical interests and art!
Most underrated rocker
Charla Tan underated get the fuck atta here
hes good but hes far from underrated
Josh Jones i mean he as a person not his band
Lars is the best!
Lars has ambitious. From a early age. Cool cat in my book.
Next time please use microphones for the audience so we can hear the comments and questions.
What's incredible is, he is worth over $200 million dollars and has not lost touch with who he was prior to the wealth.
Hes a business man and a guy who put metallica on the map in Denmark and Europe! The band wouldn't be where they are without him love him or hate him!
This is the man who created Metallica and made the corporation sustain till this time. The Drummer, the Arranger, Producer, The Manager, The Little Danish Lars MF Ulrich, ladies and gentlemen.
1:10:00 That's already happened. The Duke Lacrosse guys. It happens all the time.
Seen Metallica and GNR. In kcmo
I'm 1993. Both of them where so freaking good I couldn't believe it!!! Not kidding.. live Metallica freaking killed it.. guns too.. but Metallica was more of a band for big arena rock and stuff
I'm from Kansas city, saw them in 89 at Bonner springs sandstone ampatheater June 21st. I live in Wilmington DE now
My cousin's lived just south of Indianapolis in the 80s. They saw Metallica with WASP (I think?) and later Ozzy. Back when they ruled the world.
smart man
Lars looks and talks very intelligently.

Genius
Where can I find the interview Lars did with Het and Kirk?
czcams.com/video/AFAs3Y5Pyf4/video.html, here.
Brotherhood....
Tennis is kinda a mindfk altogether especially professional tennis It's a monster you have to start when you're at least 4 or 5 It's very highly competitive I was born in the 70s to that American middle class and remember even into the early 80s guys like Jimmy Connors Björn Borg and John McEnroe
My Dad was the tennis freak he tried to get me into it rather unexpectedly cold Turkey marched me out the second story condominium and proceeded to take me out on the court on a hot and sunny summer day when I was that age needless to say it didn't go down well
Starts drumming in 78, forms Metallica in 81 wow
Imagine if they split up in 89 after Justice. They'd be one of the greatest bands of all time.
Nah, honestly I think if they broke up right after reload they'd probably be able to claim that kind of fame. The load albums weren't terrible at all. I may not be a huge fan of the black album or both the load albums, but they weren't commercially hated at all, and riding off the black album they were huge. After St Anger and Napster (which isn't their fault) their reputation just went right down the drain to this day. Lars would still be respected, they wouldn't have lost a million old fans destroying their CDs after a dumb website came along. Just no bad stigma at all. Should have broken up after Jason left
Lars is my favorite member of Metallica.
That’s all, you may move to the next comment now…
Best dude EU
most popular guy in metal to make fun of, but he's just a lucky dude who worked his ass off
Totally opened the Gates...
"are you here cliff? remember..."
Interesting look Lars is going for there... The Bolton Steeplejack?
Yeah, he should have been wearing the white leather jacket. Or the old red one he had in the 80s. Haha
Cuando hablas de ti mismo en algún medio tiendes a sonrojarte pero si se trata de algo serio ,una pregunta sería tiendes a palidecer
I never knew Lars loved Nirvana, that's awesome.
From day one i totally did understand the napster thing, but what i don't understand and what is never talked about, but how the hell did the demo get from the studio into the napster hands?
23:59 min.:"...and Cliff told me that if the vibe kept going on Justice there was a chance that we could maybe go play arenas ..." ??? Did they start the Justice Project during their Master Tour?
he was talking about another cliff... i dont think burton was into busines..
That's what I've always wanted to know- why he migrated to the US.
God bless, Rev. 21:4
