  • At the age of 23, Paul Gascoigne had the soccer world at his feet. Then in May 1991, a reckless tackle left him with a severe knee injury. Procuced by the same team as Football Italia, this Channel 4 documentary traces the recovery that confounded everybody and secured his transfer to Lazio.

Dr Richard Steadman was the worlds best at the time.. Many of the soccer players went to him in Colorado ,,,

@pjduff7577 wow. Hope you're ok now. I tore my MCL +Meniscus. The MCL was ignored by a surgeon for 12 months. He injected it 4 times, 2nd surgeon put cuts in it to help it to heal but didn't put it in a brace! The MCL was loose and my ACL began to give out. 3rd surgeon left the MCL then botched the ACL, 4th surgeon did a great ACL but I had to go back after 9 years to get the MCL done...too late as the MCL tissue wasn't strong enough. Another surgeon put a fibre tape over it but made a mess, and my last surgeon reconstructed it using a hamstring tendon. It's pretty good now, ACL still good too.

@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415 when I was going through hell with my knee I wanted to see Dr.Steadman in Colorado the Steadman Hawkins clinic if I remember? There were 2 others in another country, Lars Engebretson and lars Peterson who were also excellent ACL/MCL surgeons. My 2nd ACL surgeon here knew Dr.Steadman and was a top ACL surgeon for elite soccer stars here in UK.

Thanks for this upload, I had no idea this programme existed and it's very interesting. The surgery camerawork was very informative, though I winced a few times! I don't know if any of his managers ever gave Gascoigne feedback on his, er, defensive game, but if they did one would hope they tried to get him to just stop trying to tackle people! I think the 'get stuck in, go in hard' mentality was a product of the time to some extent, but Gazza very often went in needlessly hard and moreover his timing was appalling. He should have been given a bollocking every time and told to cut it out. I think I'd find it hard to consider his antics with him and his mate chucking water over me in the hotel anything but moronic, I think a lot of people he did these pranks on probably found it tiresome, though on the other hand I do think he was/is a genuinely well meaning bloke and that probably helped people think better of him. I've a feeling I should know who the tall lady he played table tennis (@15:10) with was, I think she was a model and might have been in one of the Bond films. @20:58 he refers to the training series that you posted as well, pointing out that he failed to go by his own advice to get behind the ball when you block tackle because if you don't it can damage your knee! From the 24th minute mark, his arrival in Rome is covered. I can see how that sort of manic welcome would be overwhelming! The longer the video goes on, the more I see the positive side of Gazza's personality. Love that bit at the end @50:06, time for what would become known as a Klinsmann dive :)

It’s Brigitte Nielsen, famous as Stallone’s ex-wife and Mrs Drago in Rocky IV. Also for an infamous appearance on Fantasy World Cup Live ‘98.

His total inability to keep his weight down in the 90’s was a bigger problem than his knee.
His knee was actually fine, he said himself that when he started at Lazio in ‘92 it was actually stronger than his other knee, he did that much rehab with top Italian physios.
It just kept him out from May ’91 to September ’92, because of the setback from the idiot punching him in a club in Newcastle in late ‘91, but when he eventually came back it was fine.
It’s a myth that the injury changed his skillset.
Shearer had the same one too at Blackburn and came back just as good as before.

    His legs were so weak.
Didn’t look like an athletes legs at all.
He wasn’t in an athletes condition.
Mix that with alcohol and the inflammation he’ll get, he was doomed from the get go

Paul Gascoigne is my football hero. Still my favourite player, but he was appalling during that game. Some absolutely awful tackles actually not even tackles damn right assault to injure someone.

Dirty tackle and come out worst and got what he deserved for that tackle. Never played to his best after this . His football career was short.very over rated player because not in the same class as ,Best ,Pele , Ronaldo, Messi,Maradona, ect....and people say he was I think no way near .
