    After seeing these editions everywhere on CZcams and Instagram I finally met one of them in person, at a second hand bookstore last year and I started squealing in the middle of the store. Of course I bought it, luckily it was a book I was interested on 😅. It was Miss Pettigrew lives for a day, in the all grey edition, not the one with the ilustration on the cover. I haven't read it but I'm so happy to own it 😍

      Oh lovely that one seems to be really fun and popular! Haha I completely understand the feeling of squealing when finding a treasure especially in a secondhand bookshop! Hope you like it when you get to it :)

    The Biannual used to be free if you bought recent books. You can still order it if you pay for shipping. They charge $7 to send the Biannual to the USA.

    I don't think Persophone has made it to America where I am, but I'm likely wrong.
    Your description of Persophone, reminded me of Virago Books, a publishing house started in the early 1970s as the feminist movement was growing.
    Virago reprinted neglected women writers (Mary Webb) and revived the reputations of already established novelists (Edith Wharton, Willa Cather).
    I remember seeing these books everywhere when I was in college.

      I don’t know if they’re in bookshops in America but they do post it I believe.
      Yes they sound similar, Persephone and Virago! They usually have beautiful covers :)

    I loved this video as I own Miss Buncie in Persephone and did not know Mariana by Monica Dickens is a Persephone. I ran to the kitchen to hunt for my misplaced copy! It was now on bottom of my piles! Now I must read it. You gave a splendid history of the publisher. At back of Book I see I have enjoyed others, besides Someone at a Distance, The Priory by Dorothy Whipple. I think Greenbanks by her is also a Persephone. The Fortnight in September I did buy last year, in paperback, and RC Sheriff's The Hopkins Manuscript really captivated me last year, not Persephone edition. Would be too prescient nowadays. A London Childhood of the 1870s by Molly Hughes I bought in paperback many years ago, all that series. I treasure my copies. An Interrupted Life I read decades ago and got copies for my daughters also. Your videos are wonderful! So clarifying

    I love Persephone books, I agree they're beautiful objects as well, I'd not thought about the paper, but you're definitely right that's part of what makes them so nice. Nicole, I will have to seek out William: an English Man & Greenery Street. I love Persephone books! I have 34 on my shelf (I have 3 of the 5 you discussed), and my first was Mariana 😊. I have The Winds of Heaven by her too, but I'm saving that one so I can look forward to reading it sometime in the future. I think the next Persephone book I will read is Expiation by Elizabeth Von Arnim. I recently read Father by her (Bristish Women Writers Edition) and really enjoyed it. I read Enchanted April (Vintage Edition) a few years ago, and would recommend both to you. Right now I'm reading David Copperfield in the Everyman's Library Edition - another publisher with wonderful paper quality. My next read will be Don Quixote, in advance of a ballet performance we are going to see. Love your content because I always learn something new! I'm rather envious of those Persephone catalogs!! Enjoy them & your next chapter!

    The end papers are gorgeous but I find the grey covers so drab. They look like office files. Do you think the idea of the women authors came from Virago Press?

    • @adayofsmallthings
      @adayofsmallthings  Před 2 měsíci

      haha the founder says grey is her favourite colour that's why they chose grey. she wrote a book about neglected women writers from mid century. not sure her and Virago who had the idea first! but yes they have similar ideas don't they.
