A Play That Influenced Sense & Sensibility // Jane Austen July 2024
I read The Rivals (1775) by Richard Brinsley Sheridan for this year's Jane Austen July and learnt about the influence of theatre on Jane Austen's writing, especially on her novel Sense and Sensibility. In this video, I introduce Sheridan, The Rivals and pick out a couple of similarities between the two works. Enjoy!
A few videos mentioned:
Jane Austen July wrap up from 2023, mentioning The History of England, The Genius of Jane Austen, Lovers’ Vows and Mansfield Park.

Very emotional love story with some lovely English quotations. A tale of lost love, regret and obsession with a period in someone's life. American Director Joseph Losey was obsessed with the English class system. His 1971 movie is beautiful. It's set during the Boar war , hence Trillingham asking Burgess to join British army. Marion wooed young Leo, playing with his pre adolescent biological system.

Nonsense coming from mouldy traditionalists who rely on a 17th century translation based on 12th century manuscripts (aka KJV). The "missing verses" are somehow not in the oldest extant copies of the gospels, like Sinaiticus, or various Papyri. Aaaaand, the authors of the KJV translation also omitted verses which THEY thought spurious but which were in prior translations (Geneva Bible, Great Bible). The KJV was a great translation in the 17th century. Today, it is a relic.

What I love about this play is -SPOILER- at the end, the men do what the women suggest! That’s incredible to me during a time when men had complete control over their wives. And I wonder if having a powerful woman as his Queen may be part of the reason why so many of his women characters are head strong and get their way. Was he writing it consciously to please the Queen or did his subconscious push him in that direction? We will never know I guess.

Nice video thanks, Harold Bloom is a great lover of this play, so it does have its fans, I personally found it a bit difficult to read but I do think it's growing on me, it has something of the spirit of Robert Burton's Melancholy and makes me think of Hermetic tradition of the time that Frances Yates writes so well about. It is one I will re read again and the ending gives it quite a different slant/tone to his other comedies. It feels somehow more "Arcane".

Yours are the only videos I have alerts turned on for on youtube. This is another delightful video and thoughtful analysis! Keep up the great work.

Eve is awesome and has been unjustly framed. Carefully watch the VEVO original video of No Doubt's "Don't Speak". It is telling Eve "I know you're good, I know you're good, I know you're real good. Don't tell me 'cause it hurts!"
