  • One of my reading goals this year is to read Shakespeare’s contemporaries. I want to get a sense of what the theatre scene was like during that time. The first play I tried was The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster. I loved many things about this play, but in this video, I’ll focus on the Duchess as a character. I was surprised to see such a strong and three dimensional female protagonist. It's a fabulous story and the Globe production in the candlelit Wanamaker Playhouse is superb!

Nicole, thank you for the great video on John Webster. I wish you had also summarised the last two acts for us. There is no such thing as spoilers for literature fans like you and I. 😊The suspense is killing me. Thus, I will surely read the play as soon as time permits. Keep up the good work dear friend and forever surprise us with your videos. Take care🌞🪔🌹🤨

    Thank you, Nicole.
I can't wait to read The Duchess of Malfi.
It is so good to encounter such a well-rounded character, and from what you have said in the video, the Duchess is some woman. I think I already have fallen in love with this character already. And you, of course, are so good not to give us spoilers.
Really envy your candlelit globe theatre experience.
    Love your videos as always.

I watched it on Globe Player which is an online streaming service. Maybe it’s available to you too?
      Thank you!

Thanks for this interesting video. I haven't read it yet but hope to. I just wanted to comment that I heard of the play first through Agatha Christie A quote from The Duchess of Malfi plays a role in the book Sleeping Murder-- "Cover her face, mine eyes dazzle..."

Oh that’s so cool I had no idea! She seems to like quoting old plays. She quoted Macbeth in a Christmas murder novel too, ‘who would have thought the old man had so much blood in him’ (my paraphrasing!)

Heck. That 17 minutes passed so quickly. I am going to find out what happens in the end, though I'm not sure that I want to have a feeling of sorrow this evening 😢.
