Awesome video, as always :) Cannot wait to see these, especially ‘Decision to Leave’. My own personal favorite underrated movies this year are ‘Vengeance’ (although its opening scene on the NYC rooftop made me worry that we were in for a bad movie lol) and ‘Watcher’ (which I think can be put into conversation with Alfred Hitchcock movies in productive ways, namely because it’s Hitchcockian but-on multiple levels-told through a “female gaze”). I also liked a weird little comedy called ‘Spin Me Round’ which I thought was hysterical, but it’s very niche humor, so it’s recommended with an asterisk; Alison Brie gives an amazing performance in it.

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend  Před rokem +1

Thanks, Zack! "Watcher" is definitely a good pick for this. While it was a bit too slow for me, I could totally see an audience that would really love it, and it looks gorgeous.

Thank you so much for this video, there's a lot of films that I have not watched and you made me highly interested in them. As far as my picks go, I mainly have two: The Menu and Nope. I know they're on the more mainstream side of things, but I still think those films deserve more love and attention. NOPE is ana mazing film, the sound design alone is masterful and creepy as hell. As for The Menu, it's a great thriller and a fun satire.
Lastly, have you watched Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio? I am sure you're going to like if not love that film. When it comes to animation, it's number one for sure. Can't wait for your next video!!!

I seriously have to watch "Apollo 10-1/2" (definitely hadn't heard of this) since I was exactly 10-1/2 the night of the moon landing and my mom worked in some kind of secretarial capacity on the Apollo program, so I had grown up with it, but got too tired to stay up that night and went to bed and missed the actual live feed. I also went to the LA premiere of "Next Exit" since I was a fan of both actors from their work with Mike Flanagan, and really liked it a lot, so it was nice to see it on your list. I also need to see pretty much every other film on this list, and especially glad you reminded me of "Fire of Love" which I was sad to miss in theaters.

Nostalgic for a time you never experienced. I think there is a word in Welsh that describes that emotion. "Hiraeth" - inspires a nostalgic longing, a sort of melancholic homesickness.
It is also a word used to describe a time or place you cannot return to, or one that never was. Similarly, hiraeth can be the yearning for something that cannot be experienced, attained or completed. The piece of music you won’t hear, or the garden you’ll never visit. Perhaps a person you won't ever talk to, or a someone who never existed at all.
    Quite a good word.

Beautifully shot, incredible atmosphere, creepy and unsettling vibe with some slow burn tension. Very good acting and decent English dub. I love that Julianne Nicholson gave birth to both Weird Al and Marilyn Monroe in the same year!
I love Resurrection, Weird, and The Outfit! Still need to catch up on your other picks :) Here are mine:
All My Friends Hate Me - Ruben Ostlund-esque dark comedy verging on horror that uses awkwardness and social anxiety to cringe the viewer into submission.
Confess, Fletch - The funniest film of the year that got unfortunately shit-canned by its distributor. Jon Hamm proves to be a perfect Chevy Chase substitute and I would be fine if he only played comedic roles going forward.
Emily the Criminal - A modern day Dog Day Afternoon; that is, a socially minded crime thriller featuring Aubrey Plaza's best performance.
Hatching - A Finnish coming of age body horror with extraordinary monster effects and a surprisingly humane, empathetic point of view.
Inu-Oh - A visually dazzling Japanese anime that is a medieval, fantasy, buddy comedy, serial killer rock musical. Need I say more?
On the Count of Three - A pitch perfect dark comedy about suicide featuring razor sharp writing and an incredible central duo of writer/director Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott
Rothaniel - (honorable mention because it's a special and not a film) - Jerrod Carmichael's heart wrenching sit-down stand-up comedy special. It's far more emotional and complex than you'd expect from a stand up special, while still being hilarious, and it's directed spectacularly by Bo Burnham
Soft & Quiet - The MOST disturbing film I've seen this year. A day-in-the-life style film following a white supremacist who, at first, keeps those beliefs close to her chest, while appearing on the surface like an everyday wine mom. It's also shot and edited to appear as one continuous take; one from which you cannot escape.
The Wonder - Probably on my top 10 if I'm being honest. An ethereal, weird, hypnotic story about faith, fanaticism, science, and storytelling. While the trailer shows you a period piece, the actual film quickly tears down the curtain in a surprising way; one that changes how you view the film and how you interpret the events as they unfold onscreen.

Thirteen Lives for me. I think it deserves nominations for best picture and director by the Academy.

@@ImpressionBlend I know, a lot of these titels still need to have wide US and European releases. It's always strange to have seen so many films in advance. Most of these I saw at the Berlinale and at Cannes early in the year. (The benefits of working for another filmfestival.)

  • @patriciaarodriguez6641

I just watched and enjoyed a little movie called Save Yourselves! Kind of different but enjoyable.

Bullet Train is probably the most underrated of the year for me. Because truly, I don’t think people are giving it the credit it deserves.

I think it's been finding its audience more recently, but initially - I agree, very underrated. What a fun movie!

Seen all but You Won't Be Alone, I’ll check it out. For me the most overlooked film of the year is easily The Quiet Girl.

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend  Před rokem +1

I don't know if we can even count "The Quiet Girl" as overlooked - it's not available to watch. For the most part, it only played at festivals, the US release was a one week run in like 3 theatres in NY/LA, and you can't buy, rent or stream it. So that one is on the distributors, unfortunately.

Loved your list! I had a few of the same ones on mine, plus I learned about a few other interesting titles I need to look into. Here’s my list of the most underrated films of 2022:
    (Chronological order)
AFTER YANG - A24, Colin Farrel, must see!
PETITE MAMAN - Celine Sciamma, quiet and heartfelt
THE NORTHMAN - ultimately didn’t get the attention it deserved IMO
THE BLACK PHONE - I think it got overshadowed by Barbarian and Smile
VENGEANCE - BJ Novak’s thriller deserved more attention
EMILY THE CRIMINAL - Aubrey Plaza was fantastic in this film!
DECISION TO LEAVE - Two words, Tang Wei 😍👏
APOLLO 10 1/2 - Linklater nails childhood of that era, so good! Netflix needs to start going theatrical
