What is really amazing about this group is the support they gave their drummer. They had just had amazing success with their album Pyromania and wanted to follow up right away. The drummer lost his arm in a car accident. They waited for him to recover. Then they adapted the drums to enable him to play them with his feet and one arm. A lot of bands would of just got a replacement. Love these guys!!

Rick came up with the adaptations on his own. Genius, really. They knew they couldn’t let him go after that. He’s too good, and we see it’s paid off.

Exactly! Like Neal Schon and Journey should have waited and supported Steve Perry! Instead he was more worried and concerned about $$$$!
No one could say that Steve Perry s a front man didn't Journey into the stratosphere with his vocals!
If he didn't, WHY replace him with two singers who sounds EXTREMELY similar but can't duplicate his vocals power!

    • @Frostrazor
      @Frostrazor Pƙed 2 lety +8

@@kimberlygrimm7007 well the difference with this is they were aging and didn't have a lot of years left and had just dropped a new album, and wanted to seize that momentum.
Plus Rick showed desire and passion for getting back, started working on ways to modify his drums to accommodate his new handicap.
Steve from his own admission was non committal and said he didn't know when he'd be back or if/when he's want to go under the knife.
      | get it - was sad, and would have been nice to wait, but I think Steve wasn't really heart set on touring.

A bit of info for you, Rick Allen lost his arm in a car wreck after the Pyromania album & everyone wanted them to replace him as the drummer, but the band said no. They waited till he recovered & he created a drum kit that he could use his feet to play to compensate for his missing arm.

I’m a drummer who’s looked to Rick for inspiration since 1991 when I learned to play. In 1993 I was in a near fatal car accident. Torn up my insides and broke my back. At one point I was told I wouldn’t walk again. Spent three weeks in two hospitals, had one back and two abdominal surgeries, and lost close to 45 pounds.
It took me a while to get back up but I did. I didn’t play the drums for a little over a year. When I got the opportunity to play again, I took it and have never looked back. My body has been through a lot. I made it about 12 years before the chronic pain started to become a challenge.
Since 1993, I’ve had 22 surgeries. I have bulging and degenerative discs in my neck and low back. Both hands have nerve damage. Right hip is going out. Left ankle has torn tendons.
But I’m still playing as I can, and it’s all because of Rick.

To add on to the story about the drummer losing his arm. He was nervous, for the first show in the tour, coming back after the accident. They had a reserve drummer just in case. They played this song to start, and the reserve drummer turned to the tour manager and said, "Hey, yea, I'm gonna take off. He doesn't need me here."

WOOT WOOT!! You found one of the greatest 80's bands that still rocks today!! They are an English band that started in 1977. It wasn't until the early 80's they became really popular here. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. The band was ranked No. 31 in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" and ranked No. 70 in "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
Rick Allen, the drummer was 15 years old when he started with Def Leppard back in 1978. On December 31,1984, Rick was involved in a car crash in Sheffield, England. While trying to pass another car at a high speed, he lost control of his Corvette C4, which hit a dry stone wall and entered a field; his left arm was severed. Doctors initially reattached the arm but was later amputated due to an infection. Despite losing his arm, Allen soon decided to continue playing drums with Def Leppard and adopted a specially designed electronic drum kit. The band took a hiatus from onstage performances until August of 1986 when Allen was able to return to live drumming. He has since re-adopted partially acoustic drum kits depending on the setting. He is known as "The Thunder God" by fans. Here's an interview with Rick from a few years ago about the accident and his life with Def Leppard and more. czcams.com/video/6kgbUaKiAIQ/video.html
    Lead singer is: Joe Elliott
    Bass: Rick Savage
    Guitar: Phil Collen
    Guitar: Vivian Campbell (male)
Songs to listen to before Rick lost his arm - "Photograph" - "Rock Of Ages" - "Hysteria" - "Foolin'"
After accident - "Animal" - "Armagenddon It" - "Hysteria" - "Love Bites" - and many more.
I personally went to their "Love Bites Concert" after Rick Allen came back and Def Leppard started touring again. It was an AMAZING concert. His drum set would spin so everyone in the auditorium could see him and the reason his face is airbrushed on the back of his shirt in some videos. That was from the concert. He wanted everyone to see him.
Def Leppard still tours today...check their website and you might find a concert close by.
    GREAT REACTION!!

The drummer lost his arm in a car accident and they never ditched him, instead, he had a special drum kit constructed with which he was able to incorporate his feet more and the band waited for him to recover and retrain himself. RESPECT all around for that epic move. They were big before that but went on to become a monster band.

How many bands' past or present would show such brotherhood, the faith they have in one another is something to aspire to! Rick Allen lost his arm when he was 21. He joined Def Leppard at 15. The band chose to stay beside him and wait until he was healed and re-taught himself how to play. He has a special drum kit, in which his left foot pedal would emulate what his left arm could do. He still had PTSD from the accident to this day, and sees drumming as therapeutic.

Def Leppard were on top of the world w/ a massive hit record 'Pyromania' in 1983... but drummer Rick Allen's car accident in late 1984 changed everything. After his amputation and recovery in the hospital, he told the band that he wanted to play the drums again. Rather than replace Rick Allen, the band loyally gave him time to see if he could pull it off.
Rick Allen was 15 when he started playing drums for Def Leppard... he was the most accomplished musician amongst the original Def Leppard. He was 16 when Def Leppard recorded their 1980 debut album 'On through the night'. After his accident, he worked to design an electronic drum kit that would enable him to play beats w/ his feet, which compensated for his missing left arm. In 1986, Def Leppard played their first shows w/ Allen since the accident, and he was unstoppable on the kit and earned the nickname 'Thunder God'... U can check out a drum solo he performed live on recent tours.
Def Leppard's 1987 album 'Hysteria' was slow to sell, but eventually outsold Michael Jackson's 'Bad' album... it needed to sell 5 million copies just to pay for the studio costs of making the record, and sold 12 million copies in the US.
Unfortunately, another tragedy hit Def Leppard after the 'Hysteria' tour... Guitarist Steve Clark, who was the rock star of the band, suffered from manic depression and alcoholism, and was deteriorating from alcohol and drug abuse in 1989... Sessions for the next Def Leppard album 'Adrenalize' kept getting delayed in 1990 as Steve Clark went to rehab a number of times, but couldn't stay sober. The band decided to give him a 6 month 'leave of absence' and shut down the sessions, until he was ready to return... but it didn't help, ultimately... Steve Clark was found dead in his home in early 1991, from a mix of drugs & alcohol.
Def Leppard recorded the 'Adrenalize' album w/ guitarist Phil Collen playing Steve Clark's parts in the studio and released the album in 1992. Guitarist Vivian Campbell joined the band that year for the tour.
Some of Def Leppard's classic songs - 'Rocket' ... 'Hysteria' ... 'Love bites' ... 'Rock of ages' ... "Let's get rocked" ... 'Work it out' ... 'Tonight' ... 'Love bites' ... 'Armageddon it' ... 'Photograph'... 'Promises'... đŸ”„đŸ”„đŸ€˜đŸ€˜

Look up their live version of "Switch 625" (instrumental song). Best one to look up is probably their Vegas show from 2018. Rick Allen (the drummer) has a solo near the end of the song that shows off his skills and his quickness with his foot (he plays the parts that his missing hand would play with pedals at the base of the drumkit)

Rick has been a professional drummer since he was 12. He lost his arm in a car accident while Leppard was working on their 3rd album. Now he plays the left hand part with his feet (he has always played barefoot). He has different programs for different songs - each drum head can change sound depending on what he needs for that song.

He joined Def Leppard when he was only 15 years old & he had both arms when he first started in 77 or 78 . It wasn't until 84 when he rolled a Corvette , the seatbelt cut his arm off . The doctors were able to reattach it but he started getting gang green & they had to cut it off again . I've said it once & I'll say it again . Def Leppard is the greatest band ever , not just because they spend all their money in the studio & concentrate on making great songs . But because of the character Joe Elliott , Rick Savage , Steve Clark & Phil Collen showed Rick Allen by sticking with him & not replacing him with someone else after he lost his arm . Which a lot of other bands would have done . But because of their character is why they should be recognized as the greatest band ever .

They were actually encouraged by their drummer to get another drummer after he lost his arm but the band refused. They put everything on hold while he recovered and learned how to play the adapted drums. All of the members refused to think about hiring another drummer and told him that they would not continue if he wasn't their drummer. They are one band that through thick and thin they have never changed their lineup of band members. Check out their live numbers with the drum solos. There are many on YT just search for Def Leppard Drum live drum solos. Hysteria is a good song with a solo.

NEVER LET YOUR HANDICAP DEFINE YOU!
Rick Allen is living proof to never let the hand of cards life gave you stop you from success. He's a rock star drummer with arm! AND he had to RELEARN how to to do it after losing it in 1983. It wasn't a birth thing, he had to unlearn and relearn to do things with his feet.
And the band's love for their brother to stick with him and let him time to learn instead of just replacing him. That's loyalty!!!
No matter where you're from, what you have or don't have, this is inspiration to anyone that if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen.

Saw a video about Rick Allen recently and about his life today. There's a scene in his kitchen where he has a cutting board on the counter and he's slicing a lemon or tomato. He reaches up with his left foot to hold the object and slices it with the knife in his right hand. Truly an inspirational man. Never give up, Never surrender.

Can go crazy in this rabbit hole AB! I remember when the drummers accident happened back in my day, but it's unheard of to hear of a band not leaving a member behind. They never gave up on him which speaks to the character and integrity of this fantastic 80s Rock band!!! Love your reactions! 💜

One of the best things was the commitment of the whole band when Rick Allen, the drummer, had that horrible car accident.
Apart from that, Leppard are one of the best bands that mixed the 80s NWoBHM rock with more pop oriented sounds. "Pour" is a perfect example of that taste and mixture

there was a movie made about how the group got its start, all the way through the making of Hysteria. The movie is called Hysteria: The Def Leppard Story, and it certainly includes Rick Allen having his accident and learning to play again, ending with them playing a concert and this particular song, and the band calling Rick the Thunder God!
