Moon bike because its like doing moon walk in a bike
@@BabyDontHearnMeNoMore yeah
There is one more impossible bike to be build.
A bike that works like normal. But the stearing is the backwheel and the driving wheel is in front.
The steering bar should be the normal placement.
It needs to be done!!
maybe it's ridable if u only ride it in 1 wheel like a unicycle.
“Everyone can ride a bike” I feel attacked
Props to Toby, big brain moves right there
ohhh i see now
@Don't Read My Profile Photo if u dont want people to read your name then don't comment
That was so clever tbh lol
we all ASIAN it eazy foh us
creative problems require creative solutions
What if you combined this with Destin's reverse steering bike?
I was just think the same thing. Guessing it would be slightly easier to ride because it would auto stablise?
@@sirromeoj It wouldn't. I'm fairly sure Destin's bike is actually stable, it's just our intuition pushing the handle bars the wrong way that makes it hard. But if you can ride a bike without hands, you can ride Destin's too.
@@sirromeoj the auto steering feature is an effect of the angle of the pivot in relation to the direction of travel.
A normal bicycle has the pivot in front of the point where the tire contacts the ground. To make a bicycle that auto steers in reverse you would need to make the pivot be behind the wheel’s point of contact with the ground.
so... a reverse backwards bike? part of me thinks it would actually cancel out, kinda...
right?!
I seemed to have unknowingly trained for this most of my life. I used to ride a lot of MTB street and would ride everywhere backwards, my nickname was "Backwards Ben" 🤣
There are a few key tricks to riding backwards.
1 - Don't look down at your front wheel, look at the horizon.
2 - Make micro-adjustments to your steering, big sweeping turns are difficult to recover from.
3 - Speed is your friend, it's much easier to control with a bit of pace.
4 - Practice, a lot of it!
This is different.
I did the same with my bikes, HOWEVER, the bike itself would still go forward, keeping the steering forward.
In this way its going backwards, putting the steering at the rear. A rear steering changes everything.
This is not the same though. That bike is made in a way to be able to bike backwards properly. This one isn’t so it immediately loses balance but I do think that looking in front of you would be better for this bike too but very scary
1:00 expanding on the positive vs negative feedback: a bike rolling forwards has negatice feedback because the contact point of the front wheel is behind the turning axis of the handlebars. This means that when the wheel is turned, not only does the bike lean into the turn, the frictional forces impart a torque on the turning axis in the opposite direction of the turn, pushing the wheel back to center. When rolling in reverse, the contact point is now in front and the torque is in the same direction as the turn, causing the wheel to turn more in the same direction rather than self stabalizing, making any small misalignment compound on itself.
This video and the last felt very fluid, more so than some of the earlier videos. Some before felt a little bit corporate, like very strictly scripted and stuff, and I like the more personal feel in these videos! In the same video on James taking a break, they mentioned how they began to feel less personal and more like a company. This video makes it feel like some changes are taking place, and it was very fun to watch! It looked like everyone involved had a lot of fun making it! I really hope this continues, and both James and the rest of the team can continue doing what they love without it becoming a burden.💜
When they realized it YOUTube and not COMPANYtube
yeah i kinda just stopped watching for a while because it became alot less... them.
Part of it may be that it wasn't a very expensive nor time consuming project, so a lot less pressure during the process.
11:35 The power of simping.
It's been so fun seeing you from your start as an international intern at Hacksmith to a full fledged member to someone whom I actively look forward to seeing. I'm glad you've remained with Hacksmith. I'd follow you elsewhere, but as a Canadian I'm forever hopeful you'll continue to find success with Hacksmith industries.
From a 6-legged mega mech to a literal 1-minute build with spray paint and stickers. Loving the unexpected variety in projects as of late!
Now we need a car that can only drive side to side or horizontally
There's a car than can rotate all four of its wheels for "easier parking", for all that's worth. That's probably the closest to what you're looking for.
At least that one is going to balance on its own
Certainly!
sir thats called drifting. 😂
@@robertbernard7844 here's an even better idea, the sideways car is steered by claw machine controls

I'm injured at the moment but one of my 4 bikes is my fakie bike . Since I live in a flat area I flipped the sprocket and coaster brake so it pedals backwards .
The pedaling forwards and going fakie is a huge challenge. If it pedaled backwards it would be easier to ride .
When I'm on my flatland bike I instinctively pedal backwards as it doesn't have a free coaster .
The snake pattern is key .
I know people who fakie fast and I don't know how they do it . I fakie slow and they don't know how I do it .
If you configure it to pedal backwards you can learn to ride it and will succeed .
try changing the angle of the steering wheel? like the opisit way, i think the steering wil be more stabilised then?
I was legit waiting, to see if someone would try to sit on it backwards, arms behind them 😂
And Toby feels like future Hacksmith Intern material for that big brain move.
with you on the backwards
Sitting on it backwards makes it even harder.
He looks and sounds a bit like if he was Tom Scott's son 😄
It certainly explains why he is the best presenter of those who can present.
if u stand up get a modern frame lower seat wider bars i could do it. in mtb n bmx its just a simple trick to ride backwards. the pedalling might be weird at first but u dont have to constantly peddle.
Reverse the "rake" angle of the front wheel. Make the rake lean backwards instead of forward
Even though this may not be a super "build-focused" project, still just as entertaining and educational!
The Hacksmith has had a few educational stuff in the past even when this thing picked up, so it is still in line
Toby killed this video. Would love to see more of him as a host
Toby is the guy who won $100. Do you mean Charles?
think outside the box :)
reverse the caster on the front forks / mod bicycle frame to flip the front fork angle
The way the bike just disassembles itself 😂
Cheap, simple.. and yet *so entertaining*
1:50 the stability that the bike has going forward is because of the "caster angle". If its positive, like in a bike, it self-stabilices the wheel. If its negative, like in a shopping cart, it makes it wanna flop around.
The extreme version of this would be... The Citröen 2cv!
The strange suspension of that car has a caster angle of almost 90°!. So when its going backwards, its surprisingly easy to flip over the whole car if you're not careful!
... Don't ask me how i know ...
I think you should connect the longer handlebar forward
The issue doesn't seem to be the moving backwards at all. The reaction of your steering to it is. You can see it in most trying, once they go straight it goes well, but once they start to balance they are on the floor.
Others said it: sit on it backwards.. I think it's the best chance for your brain to react with steering.. You just need to practice all the other hard things, but those seem to be just repetition and not reaction from your brain
Fun fact, if you turn the steering wheel backwards you would defeat the castor angle and make it correct its way in the backwards direction instead of front direction, it’s the same as in a car where it self corrects after a u-turn but it would drift to a side in reverse.
Well yeah but at that point u just have a normal bike and it defeats the purpose lol
You’re assuming that the tire doesn’t hit the down tube and the cables are long enough to turn the wheel around.
You could also try sitting in reverse... On the bar
It's still have the steering angled in the wrong direction, making it inherently unstable
We tried spinning the handlebars 180°. That didn't work. It was arguably a bit better, but it was still effectively as difficult.
Reversing the caster angle might work, but that would be a bit more involved than spinning it backwards.
This video screams “We need money!” LMAO
And it’s that much better because of it
I'd give it a good pedal to go backwards and then attempt to coast it the rest of the way.
I think standing up and putting more weight over the front wheel also helps adjust your balance point.
Definitely love this more personal type of video as opposed to the more coporate feel, keep it up!
as a mountainbiker that knows how to ride backwards (without the ability to pedal but nontheless) i have a couple of tips to do it better:
1: Resist the automatic thing where you start bending over the bars and try to rather sit more upright as you normally would when going forward.
2: Generally try to steer as little as possible as steering will acumulate more and more when you arent used to riding backward and will lead you to fall after seconds.
Rotating the peddles backwards as your rolling backwards also helps with the co-ordination. I wondered how it would have gone if they peddle in the direction they were going.
I would love to see how Mike Boyd would do this. Please reach out to him!
I was thinking Seth with Berm Peak. He'd eat this up
Mike Shake
“Of all the thing I’ve painted, this is definitely one of them” I am deceased
The head tube angle, fork rake, and offset is what makes a bike so stable going forward.
It’s VERY difficult to ride a bike backwards.
Try pushing a shopping cart backwards down a big hill.
Similar results.. road rash.
Replace the saddle with some handle bars and fit a seat where the bars are and make it rear steer see how difficult that would be
I really like Toby’s presenting style- I’d really like to see more of him
Turn the seat around and put handle bars on back hooked up to front ones then ride that way then it would work better ... Just make sure you make it turns the right way as you turn the bar ..
If you want to make a rideable backwards bike net time you need to adjust the steering so that the steering axis falls behind the tyre's point of contact with the floor if you were going forwards (or in front from the perspective of going backwards)
Lol Toby outsmarted everyone
toby cheated
@@davidbarnes1439 there weren't any rules
I thought of that too 😂
Really like the ending. Just trying to ride it on your own in what looks like a car park whilst singing the rocky theme to yourself. This is the kind of video I will always enjoy.
The big budget polished stuff was cool. But honestly, this back to basics, super geeky and seeing your guys passion for engineering and hacking is what I'm here for.
Keep up the great work you guys.
This above comment deserves way more votes!
If you were to make the back wheel the wheel that turns and extended the handle bars from the back to the front the i think itd be easier to right since itd be more like youre riding a regular bike, but you are backwards instead of the bike.
There is a way to bypass the turning problem
From what I understand when backward it’s like pushing and be a problem like holding heavy object up and compare it to carry it like a bag
To help the back wheel must be the turn wheel so it fools the bike that that way is where your turning
I’m not sure if that help but it could
I love how this was a video about a "simple" bike, but you guys were able to make it entertaining. Thank you for always having fun and in turn making your videos fun to watch!
I bet Mike Boyd could learn this
Probably already can
Hahaha definitely, they should get him on these projects!
Colab time
Now this is the Hacksmith I like. Simple but highly entertaining. Keep it up!
I think it mainly has to do with the caster angle of the wheels
0:00 "Everyone can ride a bike." That's a bold statement.

So would putting the backwards steering, the tire turns to the right when you steer left, on this make it harder or easier.
I would like to see how my buddy would fair on a bike like this I might remake it he rides normal bikes backwards so he has part of the concept down just has to work on the instability
Sometimes you have to move backward to go forward
I feel like what this technically boils down to, is riding a unicycle, while also reversing a trailer.
try to invert the fork angle.. it will be ridable backwards but not formards :)
try by turing around the handle if you wildo that the u would be able have much control of the bike.
I feel like this is a challenge for Mike Boyd.
I wonder if combining the backwards and the reverse steering of the other video would help
I also always find work around to everyone’s bets so seeing this guy doing a work around it was pretty nice for a change
I'm happy to see James is kinda back and I hope he is doing better and I hope he feels better you guys have inspired me so much ☺️
Make a bike where the turning is controlled by the pedals and the speed is controlled by the handle bars sorta like those little plastic cart toys that you wobble the handle bars to move it
Please more quick builds
4:00 of all the things I've painted this is one of them -hacksmith 2023
Could you do a pocket staff made of tungsten or titanium?
I would love more videos like this from the Hacksmith team, little comparatively low effort projects where the team gets to goof around with the public, and we as the fans get to know you have stuff cooking.
What if you inverted the front fork angle, so that the fork is angled backwards?
Bro moonwalked with a bike. 💀
For such a cheap project, this was a lot more fun to watch than some of the more expensive ones.
Change the angle of the front fork or in other words the angle of the bearing assembly holding the front fork to make it more stable going in reverse.
I wonder if it would be ridable if combined with the inverted steering bike.
A bike with legs would be cool. Fully mechanical challenge. Then build 2 and have a jousting competition.
If the bike falls away from you when you turn, would adding a mechanism to invert the steering input help?
People that claim a "reverse steering" bike would help are wrong. I can fakie, or go backwards on a bike, but learning how to do that on a "reverse steering" bike was more difficult than going forward.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
"Everyone can ride a bike" this sentence has not stopped being funny ever since the Tom Scott bike arc
i used to have a bike where i could go backwards and forwards, i mainly remember using it to break easier
I am confused - didn't we already get this video?

Having a mini laughing fit this morning, I live in the same general area as these guys and my bike that looks like that was stolen a year ago. I think that's my bike. Lol.
You guys should combine this with the smarter every day bike. Theoretically they could cancel each other out and be like riding a normal bike but it goes backwards.
that's what I was thinking too.
I feel like it should work. but also very possible it will mess with your mind even more
Which one of them? Didn't they have two? One that had inverted steering and one that only turned right?
Props to hacksmith team
I could not stop laughing from the moment you flipped the pedals and crank!
I want to see this paired with the bike that steers in the opposite direction 😂
What happends when you combine the backwards bike and the backwards steering bike?
Toby's a legend
I'd like to have tried it hands behind my back onto the handlebars riding it in reverse so actually facing forwards like some Circus style
So simple and such great content, thanks for the video, was a helluva good time watching everyone try
I would be curious to see a BMX rider on this thing. One that can ride backwards of course.
I wonder if it would help to also invert the steering on this bike
i ride my bmx bike backward all the time but the pedaling forward while doing it would take a little practice.
LMAO “of all the things I’ve painted this is one of them” 😂😂😂
this can be a great prank for unsuspecting bike thieves if they are the type they would ride the bike out of the crime scene hehehe
They'd just give up the moment it only goes backwards. The inverted steering gag is better for those. Then they would at least try a few times before figuring out it just not worth it. More fun that just seeing a guy ditch it immediately.
I'm wondering, would reversing the steering make it easier, or even harder to ride this backwards bike
Harder more than likely, but definitely not easier. Directional steering isn't the problem here, it's stability. Unless you're saying having the steering effect the rear wheel instead of the conventional wheel, in that case.... Maybe?
I'd love to see one where you adapt a bike so the pedals power the front wheel, and the handlebars turn the rear wheel. Essentially a forklift-steer bicycle.
Also, great to see so many students genuinely getting amongst it. I agree, that did seem more fun than calculus.
I love how we went from a giant Spider Mech to a spray-painted bike with the sprockets flipped, this is the kinda simple stuff I missed 👍
Great low-cost video. I would be more than happy to watch more videos like this. A+.
I love how you call the students "unsuspecting victims"🤣it's true cause they had no idea what they were getting themselves into! I love these videos! Keep up the incredible work!
A little bit of drag on the front brake once you get some speed (just a tiny bit, not enough to lock it up) would probably result in increased front wheel stability.
Start off with locking the front wheel in one position..... i.e. prevent the handle bars from turning.... the first bikes had no steering . that will resolve most of your issues. remember that when we are riding we for the most part do not move the steering unless it is a very tight turn..
Hacksmith always give Fresh content, I have been watching this good stuff since 4 or 5 years ago

love how simple this was compared to the last one.
