If you want a real story look into the weird deaths of Marconi scientists. They were working on weaponising satellites over 30 died in weird ways explosions in their cars, filling their cars with gas including multiple containers then driving full speed into buildings and a women in high heels who allegedly bound herself then walked through thick mud above her knees in high heels to drown herself in a tidal river but my favourite is one Indian born quantum physist who vanished while working in the UK was presumed dead but showed up nearly a year latter working in a sweatshop in Paris France only to vanish again almost immediately.
One great source for these and a lot of other accounts is the episode of Thinking sideways podcast called GEC - Marconi deaths. Or for a less deep dive the You Tube channel That Chapter has a 15 minute video on the subject.

I saw a dude on some channel heavily debunk the "she's back in China" explanation. I wasn't really listening, but it's out there.

To add credence, I did find a article a while back where they got ahold of her son to get his side of the story. I think this was in in Virginia or something, but apparently he told them his mother wasn't allowed to return to China to visit relatives due to the risk of espionage (for both the Americans and Chinese) so she had to settle permanently in the states. I am not sure what reason he gave for why his mom abruptly stopped working on the program but I think it was some sort of private matter, take that as you will. Also based on the interview we learned she had died a couple years earlier (again I can't remember when) but it was definitely in the US, not China. This may be all an elaborate hoax or something to keep the "truth" hidden or to dissuade further questions but it was an interesting article nonetheless.
