  • Circling is a practice bringing essential innovations in human development for the 21st century. It deeply impacts us in fundamental areas of our life such as: personal power, artful and intimate communication and thriving in groups.
Circling brings together powerful principles that integrate wisdom from meditation, therapy, coaching and leadership development. It shows us how to bring these principles in our everyday lives, especially into our connections with others.

I was introduced to this idea of "circling" along with "authentic relating" by my beautiful and amazing girlfriend. I attended a few sessions, largely in support of her, and found them to be very interesting. I consider myself to be an independent thinker (about as independent as any of us can actually be). I really feel this is the "latest" attempt, in recent human history, to rediscover or reclaim something that is certainly not new and has always been present and essentially human. However we become separated from our essential humanity which seeks to recognize, honor and nurture the same in others, we look for ways in which to rediscover it. My biggest concern is that in these various age old practices and disciplines we chase the effect but neglect the cause. Eventually the enthusiasm and sense of discovery runs out and the discipline becomes another religious exercise which may make one believe they have been elevated but not essentially as self will remain and eventually present as askew and voracious as it ever was.

I participated in a cirkeling event at a burn. It was 'brutal' but very giving as well. I certainly got some insights.

I have done a few searches on this now and this video was the latest to show up. None of the "ressources" I've found actually say what it is other than "deep" or "transformative" or some other vacuous term. As far as I can see it is people looking into each others eyes in group settings - maybe thereby triggering an empathy response??

I do lots of circling, and I find everything online about it to be atrocious bullshit written by new age types who don't seem to know how to (or don't care to) describe what is actually happen in understandable ways. I didn't even bother to watch this video because I'm assuming I'll hate it. (ok i watched it and yeah)
The practice I do is called surrendered leadership European style. In a mindfulness meditation you might notice thoughts and feelings rise into your awareness. In circling what you are doing is
      - putting your own body in your awareness and paying attention to thoughts and feelings that arise (in a fashion similar to meditation)
      - doing this *in the context of other people*. For example "when I pay attention to this person, these thoughts and feelings arise, and it is different when this other person is in my awareness"
      - saying these things out loud / sort of having a conversation. One person says a thing about what it is like to have pay attention to another person and what thoughts come into awareness. The second person might have a reaction to that where thoughts and feelings come up for them in response to the first, etc.
      - other things that are often listed as principles of circling, but I think are effects of following the above:
----- noticing the difference between 'being connected' to other people / self. Naively people might think this is doing eye gazing, but is more when your mirror neurons or something seem to be internally modeling/keeping track of other people, rather than speaking to them as an object. They feel very different which is noticeable in the meditative context.
----- self honesty/self trust /trust in general---- if you are accurately talking about your own sensations and accurately saying them when you want to say them, this builds self trust. Also it is a socially reinforcing part of the circle, because people are very good lie detectors and will have strong reactions when people aren't honest about emotions, and if they say those reactions out loud, the circle will become more honest as a whole
I think there is an oxytocin high aspect to it, and you get people that talk about their feelings of care and empathy, but if people are being honest about what comes up for them (and you can tell!) then plenty of more negative feelings and conflict comes up. People yelling vulnerable things at each other probably makes for worse youtube videos though.
      Hopefully that helps.

@@i_want_youtube_anonymity7099 that was very clarifying. The part where I picture people yelling made me laugh! And when you said you'd watched it anyway. Thank you.

@@i_want_youtube_anonymity7099 well if they had actually listed what you just wrote on the description of the event page i might be more inclined to go. instead it was a bunch of woo-woo new age garbage, as you just said and pretty much as this video also displayed.

Even though the video is called "what is circling?" it didn't really explain clearly how it works. Mostly comments about how people felt about it. Anyone got links that actually explains?
