- Wood Turning Osage Orange & Resin Bowl that has been named, “The EVIL Eye” This video shows how I made a wood and epoxy resin bowl utilizing a piece of osage orange aka bodark, some Total Boat slow cure resin and a Harbor Freight Woodturning Lathe. Total Boat did supply the epoxy resin for this hybrid woodturning and will one day be part of a review of different casting resins that are used in woodturning or resin turning. The casting of the osage orange bowl blank was not shown because honestly I did not expect to make a wood turning video from this but when I saw how good the total boat slow cure epoxy resin looked I immediately knew I needed to turn the camera on and start recording the rest of the woodturing / resin turning process. There will be a second edit to the wood turning video on my second channel, "Brads Workbench" which will be linked down below.
This woodturning or hybrid resin turning project also allow me to feature a my homemade SANDING PASTE and TUNG WAX FINISH. I have been working on this product for a long time behind the scenes and finally stumbled upon the proper mix proportions that I think make TUNG WAX one of the most durable and stunning natural looking finishes I have ever used for my woodturnings and I have even used it on some smaller woodworking projects by hand.

The homemade Extra Fine Sanding Paste is a pretty standard formula of mineral oil, beeswax, and a food safe fine abrasive. For HYBRID OR RESIN projects I suggest sanding to 600 grit, applying a *shellac sealer, sand with 800, the apply Extra Fine Sanding Paste. Follow up with Tung Wax Finish for a hard outer shell.
The homemade Tung Wax Finish is made with 100% Pure Tung Oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax. I suggest rubbing over entire project by hand, then melting in the wax using friction with the lathe on. Afterwards if project still feels wet buff with a clean paper towel. You will be left with a long lasting natural looking sheen that feels as smooth as glass.
*Please note when applying the shellac sealer, the amount of coats helps to determine the amount of shine the Tung Wax Finish will bring out. If you are going for a low luster sheen only use 1 to 2 coats of shellac based sealer. If you want more of a shine, apply more coats of shellac based sealer until desired look is achieved. This project shows 4 coats of shellac sealer being applied that was approximately a 1 lbs cut.
Woodturning and resin turning are incredibly fun hobbies to get into. As you can see by this video you can definitely get very creative. If it is softer than metal and dry you can most likely cast it in resin and turn it on a wood lathe. Rated R Woodturning r u using negative rake carbide tips for the resin?
@@chriswalters1014 for some of it. Here, this video technically does go public until Tuesday but I'll share it with you now. On this channel I talk only about the tools used and how they preformed. czcams.com/video/4yBctQTAWLg/video.html
Rated R Woodturning i had a resin pen blank and i used carbide without negative rake and i broke it
@@chriswalters1014 you definitely have to be more careful with standard cutters
Rated R Woodturning what do you recommend i do?
The finish looks bright and natural.
Thanks, thats the glow only tung oil can give imo
It is awesome and stunningly and breathtakingly beautiful. The chatoyance and absolutely everything about it is awesome.
Thank you!
Love your products, Brad! Keep it up! So glad you're getting success selling it too! Looking forward to the next turning!

Beautiful bowl and thanks for all of the details about finishing. Great work!
Np, it took a long time for me to find a finish i liked and was easily repeatable
Another fantastic bowl and the finish was fantastic to thank you 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thanks
Absolutely stunning, gorgeous colours and the finish is SO good
Enjoyable video, thank you for sharing
Thank you!
Fantastic looking bowl Brad! The finish really compliments both the wood and the epoxy. I like how you get light coming through to the inside as well.
Thanks bud. Took a long time to nail down that finish
That bowl is beautiful! So impressive!
Thank you!
Love the 3 color resin combination!
Thanks, let the wife pick these ones
Great workmanship beautiful finish on the bowl , I dream of having my own workshop x
I'm just in a tiny 8x10 space but i make it work
That’s a bloody beauty, mate!
Thanks bud
Hey Brad, great project!
I have to say, I’m a big proponent of the 40/40 grind myself! Your shop-made tools are really interesting. I think it would be an awesome video to see!
Keep up the great work!
Seth
Thanks! I got another i need to make so i may just have to film it
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Why thank you!
@@RatedRWoodturning you're welcome 😊 I am so WOWED by your talent!
Hi Brad, that bowl came out awesome! I need to get some of that finishing pastes, thanks for sharing!...Bruce

Beautiful piece...
Thank you!
That Came Out Freekin' Awesome Brad! Great Video Brother👍

Very nice bowl. Nice colors.
Thanks, check out the rock bowl video. It has some great color as well
I’d like to see you fabricating your tools.
Beautiful bowl!
Here ya go 👍 czcams.com/video/6-7zMl_i0HU/video.html
Awesome job.
Thanks, make sure ya come back. Got some unique ideas coming
I can see that carbide works very well on resin. Now that I picked up a couple of carbide tools I may have to try some resin and wood blanks.
Hey, just watched ur video. I definitely prefer carbide with resin. Turning resin is way different than wood in my opinion. Can't be near as aggressive. But it's still pretty fun
Great looking piece brother! I knew you would get hooked on the negative rake carbide ;)
Now if that price would come down! Yeesh
Damn to think you only have 465 subs. These are so cool to watch. Tbh i might try to pick up this hobby during quarantine because of you and what you do. I love your vids and you are truly an inspiration. Keep doing what you love man!
Wow, thats a huge compliment. Thank you.
Very very cool.
Thanks
I’ve been experimenting with your sanding paste. It’s been working out great so far. A great shine
Glad to hear it
Bowl looks great 👍
Appreciate it 👍
Awesome video Brad!!! That bowl is amazing!!! I hope one day to get a bigger lathe and try turning bowls myself.
I hope to one day get a bigger lathe that centers line up so I can do bowls and spindles lol. I can easily bog down this motor on wood only bowls. But i'm also probably too aggressive
This bowl turned amazing, I'm glad you decided to put it on CZcams.
Im glad you came by to watch 👍
Skillz!!! This bowl is 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks bud
Very nice
Thanks!
Stunning piece! Definitely want to check out your paste products
Absolutely Awesome Video Brad, Keep making em like that I you should be fine buddy, bowl looks great and thanks for the instructions on how to use that, as soon as I can get back into the shop I will let it rip !
Always feel free to experiment. I know David Adamsen likes to put some walnut oil on first and also likes to let the tung wax dry more. But yea this gives you something to start with. Thanks for comin by bud
Beautiful Piece and interesting process, thanks for sharing. I’m a beginner turner, s much t learn lol
Thats great! Baby steps 👍 so many amazing craftsman on youtube to learn from
"that forces a design change, let's call it", hahaha! Love that. I totally understand the nervousness that goes into giving whatever my project is that last little tweak, as the saying "perfect is the enemy of good" often slaps me upside the head. Your bowl is beautiful! Love the wood and the colors. Thanks for sharing!
Love that quote... i'm gonna have to remember that one because i've definitely been slapped a few times 🤣
Damn that's a nice one
Thanks! Im itching to do another resin bowl soon
Very nice bowl Brad. I like using the carbide on the resin and resin/wood hybrids too. 👍
Definitely
Beautiful bowl. That's one of those things I'd like to play with some day. I have an old lathe my dad used in his typewriter repair business to de-glaze typewriter platen rollers when I was a kid. I'll clean it up and i can use it to turn wood.
Let the addiction begin! Lol
Sweet walk through. Always interested in homemade tools
Grassy ass amigo
good skills
Thank u. Im still learning everyday tho
That is gorgeous! I don’t see it in your store.
No its not there yet. I always bring my bowls inside for a few weeks before listing them, just as a precaution. Next week it should go up, if you're interested you can email me at Bradsworkbench333@gmail.com 👍
👍👍👍
New subscriber. Came over to check it out from Todd Duka's channel. Nice turn out on the bowl.
Thanks. Duka is good people
Hey Brad. I just got the same lathe for my birthday. What kind of chuck do you have and did you have to use an adapter to make it fit. Love the piece by the way.
I use the nova g3 anniversary edition thing.... its around $130 BUT comes with 3 sets of jaws. So if u can swing it, I think its a great one to start with
@@RatedRWoodturning Thanks. Did you need an adapter?
No i made sure the chuck had a 1"-8 tpi... fit perfect
@@RatedRWoodturning
Thank you so much
@@charlesbigham8914 no problem at all. Im actually gonna be reviewing the lathe over on my main channel next month
McFucking love it! 😍 Just curious~are the finishers food safe?
Yes, they are made with only food safe ingredients 👍 btw "mcfucking" may just be my new favorite word
Rated R Woodturning it’s one of my favorite words, for sure 😊 As a medically retired truck driver, I know lots of colorful words 😂
@@cirn1492 ahhhhh im a covid retired oil patch hand lol 😉
Brads Workbench 10-4!! So now you’re turning wood and I’m making wreaths 😊 If my sales ever start to exceed my investment in materials, maybe you can make me something 😊
Lol i know exactly how ya feel with that too. Also didnt realize i was under the wrong name earlier 😆
I would like to buy your wax but I live in Wales uk .
Thats a tough one... i'm not quite set up for international just yet but if you want to shoot me an email we can discuss it Bradsworkbench333@gmail.com 👍
Nice video buddy, the bowl looks awesome. Keep well, Rob
